Interoute Press Release

Interoute provides financial institutions with ultra low latency direct connectivity into Equinix LD4 International Business Exchange data centre in London

Trading hub boosted by the arrival of algorithmic connectivity service

London, 6 July 2010 – Interoute, owner and operator of Europe’s largest next-generation network, has increased its UK footprint with direct connectivity to Equinix’s LD4 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centre located on the outskirts of London. Financial institutions can now utilise Interoute’s Fast Trade service to connect to both the major and emerging Multilateral Trading Facilities (MTFs) and trading venues located within the Equinix IBX data centre and other key financial exchanges throughout Europe.

As electronic trading grows, new MTFs have emerged to address the specialised needs of high frequency algorithmic trading. Equinix’s LD4 IBX network-neutral data centre has become a key UK location for these execution venues and is also home to a critical mass of buy and sell side firms, market data and technology providers. This diversity provides firms with maximum choice over which of their peers to partner with and also enables participants to quickly establish operational relationships with one another for the development of new opportunities, latency reduction and to decrease a firm’s time to market.

Financial institutions located in the Equinix LD4 IBX data centre now have the choice to use Interoute’s Fast Trade service to quickly connect to numerous exchanges across Europe with guaranteed low latency and stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Interoute’s growing pan-European network offers extensive levels of connectivity to the leading MTFs.

“We are already connected to 11 of Equinix’s IBX data centres in Europe, as well as many other key facilities. With our on-net presence in 100 cities, we are working to directly connect to as many leading and emerging exchanges as possible,” said Lee Myall, UK Regional Director at Interoute. “The increase of algorithmic trading across Europe has been huge and we are matching demand from financial institutions looking to trade across Europe competitively.”

Interoute is seeing increasing demand from financial firms for direct, high availability bandwidth into Equinix‘s LD4 IBX data centre. By connecting through Interoute’s Fast Trade, organisations are able to benefit from Interoute’s premium SLAs. The bandwidth allocated via the Fast Trade product is entirely dedicated to the customer’s use and thus maintains consistent low latency. Before it’s delivered, each Fast Trade route is tested for its exact round trip delay, to the nearest 100 microseconds, which is then guaranteed in the SLA for that specific service. Financial firms are provided a predictable high quality, ultra low latency service. Furthermore, should the service be unable to meet the SLA’s guaranteed round trip delay the customer is free to cancel the service without any additional charges.

For further information, please click here to view a video titled ‘Algorithmic trading with the fastest bandwidth speeds in Europe” featuring Interoute’s Director of Wholesale Products and Services, Jonathan Wright.

Canada's 3rd CK at Ottawa Hospital - starts treating patients in Sept

Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre - World-class cancer treatment

Once underserved, cancer patients in the Ottawa region now have considerably more access to the treatment, privacy and technology they need. This April, the Ottawa Hospital celebrated the second opening of two cancer centre expansions—the first, at the general campus, and the second, at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital (QCH).

....

‘Tough to beat’

With a state-of-the-art expansion comes state-of-the-art equipment, and the Ottawa Hospital is very excited about what they now have available.

“We just got a CyberKnife,” Doering says. “It’s equipment that does radiosurgery, which allows for non-invasive treatment of tumours. It’s like a radiation treatment but it is very focused treatment. For a brain tumour, a patient would normally go in and have the have skull cut open. The recovery would be two weeks in the hospital, in the intensive care unit. With this CyberKnife, the patient comes in for three days in a row and receives a 45-minute treatment. There is no anaesthesia, no operating room and no overnight stay in the hospital. It’s painless. And it’s so precise, that it spares the healthy tissue and only focuses on the cancer.”

“The CyberKnife is also great for lung cancer, because surgeons don’t have to worry about the lungs moving as the patient breathes,” she continues. “Typical radiation is not as precise with the lung movement and it can radiate some other tissue around it. But the CyberKnife moves with the respirations, it adjusts.”

This new machine came at no small cost—it was a $3.5-million capital investment. Fortunately, the Ottawa community came together and fundraised for the CyberKnife, showing its support for sick neighbours. We have fundraised for this and I must say the community has been great.

Right now, the hospital is building the bunker for it at the general campus. “We hope to treat our first patient with the CyberKnife during the week of September 20,” says Doering. “We’re really excited about that. It treats spine, kidney, lung, brain cancers and so on. Our folks right now are getting trained on the equipment.” Speaking of which, Ottawa has the only trained neurosurgeon in Ontario for this type of equipment. “I believe when you look at the Ottawa Hospital cancer program, you will see we have the best facilities in the country, if not the world. When you factor in our equipment, facilities and specialists, we are tough to beat.”

Fight to secure CyberKnife device

from APN News & Media:

“The cancer journey is a bizarre one,” he said. Mr Mackinnon said he wanted to use the book to bring the CyberKnife device to Australia – but after years of banging his head against the Government's brick wall he was going for a more direct method.

If he could sell enough copies, he wanted to use the money raised by the book to buy a CyberKnife device and donate it to a hospital.

“As the Government refuses to act, it is left to the general public, again, to assist those in need,” he said.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has emerged as a treatment option for local tumor control of primary and secondary malignancies of the liver. We report on our updated experience with SBRT in patients with non-resectable tumors of the liver.

METHODS: Our first 17 consecutive patients (mean age 58.1 years) receiving SBRT for HCC (n=6), IHC (n=3), and LM (n=8) are presented. Mean radiation dose was 34Gy delivered over 1–3 fractions.

RESULTS: Treated patients had a mean decrease in maximum pretreatment tumor diameter from 6.9±4.6 cm to 5.0±2.1 cm at three months after treatment (P<.05). The mean total tumor volume reduction was 44% at six months (P<.05). 82% of all patients (14/17) achieved local control with a median follow-up of 8 months. 100% of patients with HCC (n=6) achieved local control. Patients with surgically placed fiducial markers had no complications related to marker placement.

CONCLUSION: Our preliminary results showed that SBRT is a safe and effective local treatment modality in selected patients with liver malignancies with minimal adverse events. Further studies are needed to define its role in the management of these malignancies.

Data Centers Continue to Grow in a Weak Economy

from Seeking Alpha, by David Gross:

>>Few industries have withstood the recession as well as data centers. Lease rates are still rising, capacity is being filled up, and new centers are opening every week. The industry's great recession was not in 2008 or 2009, but in 2002, when it was decimated by dot com overbuilding, and some facilities were turned back into warehouses.

This year the boom is back

from The Business Times Singapore:

>>Equinix to expand data centres in Asia

Nasdaq-listed Equinix will also use the funds - procured as loan from various banks, including DBS Bank - to expand in Hong Kong, Sydney, and Tokyo, apart from Singapore, Equinix's Hong Kong-based Asia-Pacific president, Samuel Lee, told BizIT in an interview.

..

'We continued to experience strong growth within the Asia-Pacific region even during the global recession in 2009, and more so this year,' Mr Lee says. 'In fact, last year we opened a second DC in both Singapore and Sydney, and expanded our Hong Kong DC as well. This year the boom is back and we should see a strong surge in enterprise data. Much of that data would need to sit in DCs.'

In 2008, Singapore had a total of about 170,000 sq m of DC capacity, up 15 per cent over 2007. Not much capacity was added in 2009 due to the recession in 2008. But in 2010, demand may outstrip supply by up to 20 per cent, according to industry sources. Apart from Equinix, there are a slew of DC players such as SingTel, NCS, Tata Communications, ST Engineering and Fujitsu Asia.

..

According to industry analysts, the demand for DC space significantly outpaces supply in the Asia-Pacific, including Japan (APJ) region, with 50 per cent of the demand being driven by government initiatives, and the rest by Internet media, telecom and IT companies.

'Demand for DC hosting currently exceeds supply,' research house Frost & Sullivan's analyst Wu Chengyu says. 'In fact, over 80 per cent of the major DCs in the Asia-Pacific are running at close to 90 per cent capacity, and space is at a premium.'

In 2009, the market for DC services in the APJ region was about US$8 billion. That's set to cross US$10.6 billion by 2011.

New Challenges in Handheld Touchscreens

from Advanced Imaging Magazine:

By Dr. Andrew Hsu

The wide adoption of capacitive touchscreens has brought new considerations and challenges to designers. Interaction with handheld devices via gestures is gaining more attention.

...

To enhance the level of physical feedback, designers can also incorporate haptics (touch feedback), also known as “rumble feedback,” “tactile feedback,” and “vibrotactile feedback.” Haptics solutions enhance user feedback to touch input by associating a tactile effect, achieved through an actuator such as a motor, to a particular touch or gesture. Today there are improved haptics solutions, such as Immersion’s TouchSense® technology, that provides a wide library of haptic effects, making it easy for designers to integrate. Imagine subtle exertion when you touch a button icon or scrolling with wheel-like rotation effects can make an interface both compelling and easy to use.

Software design around capacitive touchscreens is more art than science and simplicity is the name of the game. Since touchscreens are complex control systems, the challenge is how to make device interaction intuitive and obvious with clean and elegant design.

...

Andrew Hsu has been the primary technical contact for Synaptics’ worldwide customers in the handheld space since 1999. He joined Synaptics in 1996 and led the company’s efforts into establishing a presence in the mobile handset market. Hsu developed Synaptics’ ClearPad™ technology, a transparent sensor that can be mounted under curved plastic and glass. He led the marketing for ClearPad, resulting in the first production phone with a capacitive touchscreen, the LG Prada. Prior to his current role, Hsu was a scientist and a design engineer that helped develop the first single-chip TouchPad™ solution for Synaptics. Hsu holds a doctorate in neuroscience and a master’s in computer and information science from the University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Cal Tech.

fatter and faster

In the low-tech world, fatter and faster reads like an oxymoron. However, Equinix's chief technologist, Lane Patterson, is appearing on a panel at GigaOM Structure 2010 Conference on Thursday, June 24 (11:20am) in San Francisco to help explain what this means to the cloud computing revolution. In order to reach its full potential, cloud computing is often dependent on one key factor: high-capacity broadband. As customers deploy the cloud they are finding they need ever-fatter pipes and lower latency than ever before. The panel investigates the perspectives from the broadband service providers and broadband technology providers. (See events for additional information)

>>On the edge of medical technology -- St. Ann's first in area with 'revolutionary' cancer treatment

Cancer surgery without the surgery is coming soon to Mount Carmel St. Ann's.

CyberKnife, a $6.3 million robotic radiosurgery system, has been in use at the hospital since Monday, June 21. The system is one of only two in the state and the first in Central Ohio.

"In my (opinion), it meets the qualifications of revolutionary," said Doug Widman, medical director of Columbus CyberKnife and radiation oncologist at Mount Carmel.

...

CyberKnife, which is made in Germany and described by Widman as looking like a robot used in automotive manufacturing, also has tighter treatment margins.

...

Widman said St. Ann's expects to treat 200 patients in the first year of the machine, and most insurance carriers cover the treatment. Because of the high cost of the procedure, all patients most be preapproved.

CK in Japan – expected to grow from 20 to 100 in 5 years??

from the IV MB, by yyy60:

>>CK in Japan – expected to grow from 20 to 100 in 5 years??

Japanese love robot and CK is one of their favorites. But they also have strict rules for CK. Although FDA approved CK for treatment of tumors in any location of the body in 2001, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare did not grant the approval until June 2008. Twenty CK (for head and neck) were installed in Japan at that time. There was a very high expectation for future sales after the approval. An old news from July 24, 2008 said: “CyberKnife units are expected to grow to about 100 over five years”.

At the end of 2008, CK in Japan increased to 21. No more were installed in 2009 and first half of 2010. Why sales stalled? Is “100 over five years” over expectation?

News on June 3, 2010 “First CK Treatments Using the Synchrony Respiratory Tracking System Completed in Japan” http://www.asianetnews.net/view-release?pr-id=39715
may answer some of the questions.

It said: “ In April 2010 fiducial markers that are compatible with the CyberKnife System were approved for use.”

June 2008 – Approved treatment in any location of the body
April 2010 – Approved fiducial markers

I think it is just a slow start, “100 in 5 years” is still a possibility, may be delayed a couple of years because of the recession. ARAY have received 3 new orders in the last two quarters. I hope the approval of fiducial markers has removed the last hurdle.

Touch screen module revenue was about $3.6 billion in 2008, and this increased to $4.3 billion in 2009. DisplaySearch forecasts that touch screen module revenue will reach $13 billion by 2016.

In mobile phones, DisplaySearch reported touch penetration was 15.8 percent in 2008, rose to 25.7 percent in 2009, and is predicted to increase to 57 percent in 2016.

Christophe Ramstein, chief technology officer of Immersion Corp., likes to quote novelist and poet Margaret Atwood to make his point about the need for haptic touch (touch feedback) as a key element for guaranteeing a pleasant user experience: "Touch comes before sight, and before speech. It is the first language and the last, and it always tells the truth."

Immersion develops systems and technology for integrating touch feedback into their licensees' products. The company this week announced that a leading Italian manufacturer of medical devices for minimally invasive surgery has obtained a license to Immersion's TouchSense haptics technology for use in its ALF-X (advanced laparoscopy through force reflection) telesurgical robot system.

Appliance Assembly: Engineers Get Touchy-Feely

from assemblymag.com (emphasis added):

>>“Touch screens are becoming widespread due to the ease of use and intuitive interfaces they enable, which can save time and increase productivity,” says Jennifer Colegrove, Ph.D., director of display technologies at DisplaySearch, a market research firm. “Falling prices have also spurred adoption. Finally, touch screen devices are now perceived as cool and fun.

“Touch screen penetration has been rapidly increasing in mobile phones, portable navigation devices, gaming and other applications,” adds Colegrove. She says the touch screen module market is growing 14 percent annually and will be a $9 billion industry by 2015, more than twice the size of today.

“In the future, people will think of refrigerators and other household appliances more as an electronic device rather than a mechanical device,” predicts Mike Deneen, appliance industry analyst at the Freedonia Group Inc. “During the next decade, we’ll see more consumer electronics manufacturers, such as LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sharp, become more active in the appliance market, especially in the United States.”

“Capacitive interfaces allow for a seamless interface, are easy to clean, and feature less quality variation than is found in the conventional ‘dome switch under a laminate cover’ that is used in most microwaves,” claims Victor Viegas, CEO of Immersion Corp., which has developed a line of tactile feedback systems called TouchSense. “Capacitive interfaces also allow for the flexibility of having dynamic graphics, such as a screen behind capacitive glass, or fixed images, such as printed labels.

“Since the capacitive sensing is on the rear of the surface, the labels and sensors never wear out, unlike many systems today,” adds Viegas. “Capacitive sensing input has a lifetime operation that is literally infinite.”

Touchy feely future for tech users

from BBC.com:

>>Touchy feely future for tech users

Technology that interacts with the user through the sense of touch has been evolving over the past decade.

Tailored vibrations on a touchscreen handset, for instance, could help to make them more accessible for visually-impaired people.

Now haptic technology is also allowing medical students to practise hospital procedures on devices with a realistic human "feel".

More Capacity And Lower Latency For Traders On SIX Swiss Exchange

from Mondovisione.com:

>>More Capacity And Lower Latency For Traders On SIX Swiss Exchange

14/06/10

In order to enhance trading in equities listed on SIX Swiss Exchange, transaction capacity is substantially extended as of Monday, 14 June 2010. Moreover, SIX Swiss Exchange supports remote market participants to reduce latency by extending the choice of proximity service providers, thereby enabling remote participants to benefit from sub-millisecond latency.

SIX Swiss Exchange as from Monday, 14 June 2010 significantly increases capacity for high-volume market participants. The capacity increase is predominantly targeted at the equities market and marks an important step in the exchange’s continuous roadmap to satisfy an ever-growing need for higher turnover and lower latency.

Further measures will include improvements to the trading interfaces to even better support automated trading and direct market access and will be made available in the second half of 2010.

Extended service offerings for proximity hosting

A further significant innovation introduced by SIX Swiss Exchange is the extension of Proximity Services for remote market participants.

Proximity Services allow participants of SIX Swiss Exchange to overcome the disadvantage of geographical distance and to enjoy the same low latency as any participant located in the Zurich area.

SIX Swiss Exchange welcomes Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) and Interxion as new and further business partners in the field of proximity hosting. Together with Colt (LSE: COLT.L) who have pioneered this service for SIX Swiss Exchange this provides remote participants with a wider choice of locations and services to suit their particular needs.

Proximity hosting clients will enjoy the same sub-millisecond latency as any Zurich based market participants. The services by Equinix and Interxion are targeted to be available as from mid-July 2010.

ABSTRACT (provisional)

INTRODUCTION

With conventional radiation technique alone, it is difficult to deliver radical treatment (> 60 Gy) to gliomas that are close to critical structures without incurring the risk of late radiation induced complications. Temozolomide-related improvements in high-grade glioma survival have placed a higher premium on optimal radiation therapy delivery. We investigated the safety and efficacy of utilizing highly conformal and precise CyberKnife radiotherapy to enhance conventional radiotherapy in the treatment of high grade glioma.

METHODS

Between January 2002 and January 2009, 24 patients with good performance status and high-grade gliomas in close proximity to critical structures (i.e. eyes, optic nerves, optic chiasm and brainstem) were treated with the CyberKnife. All patients received conventional radiation therapy following tumor resection, with a median dose of 50 Gy (range: 40 - 50.4 Gy). Subsequently, an additional dose of 10 Gy was delivered in 5 successive 2 Gy daily fractions utilizing the CyberKnifea image-guided radiosurgical system. The majority of patients (88%) received concurrent and/or adjuvant Temozolmide.

RESULTS

During CyberKnife treatments, the mean number of radiation beams utilized was 173 and the mean number of verification images was 58. Among the 24 patients, the mean clinical treatment volume was 174 cc, the mean prescription isodose line was 73% and the mean percent target coverage was 94%. At a median follow-up of 23 months for the glioblastoma multiforme cohort, the median survival was 18 months and the two-year survival rate was 37%. At a median follow-up of 63 months for the anaplastic glioma cohort, the median survival has not been reached and the 4-year survival rate was 71%. There have been no severe late complications referable to this radiation regimen in these patients.

CONCLUSION

We utilized fractionated CyberKnife radiotherapy as an adjunct to conventional radiation to improve the targeting accuracy of high-grade glioma radiation treatment. This technique was safe, effective and allowed for optimal dose-delivery in our patients. The value of image-guided radiation therapy for the treatment of high-grade gliomas deserves further study.

Equinix’s Domestic Revenue Poised for Solid Growth In H2

>>Equinix’s Domestic Revenue Poised for Solid Growth In H2

Analysts at Citigroup upgrade Equinix Inc (NASDAQ: EQIX) from "hold" to "buy." The target price for EQIX is set to $110.

According to Citigroup, the upgrade in the rating is based on, “1) prospect for improving domestic revenue growth heading into the 2H/10 based on our recent sector checks & bottoms-up revenue analysis; 2) we believe the revenue risk from Euro exposure is becoming better understood, while the organic demand environment should meet our expectations; 3) EQIX is making progress on its integration & synergy realization from its SDXC acquisition; & 4) the valuation is discounting future growth prospects for the data center portfolio, in our view.”

“We find the valuation for EQIX has become more attractive, given the recent share price underperformance,” the analysts mention.

Chicago to Sydney: The Futures Are Now

a comment to the Equinix Press Release in an article published by securitiesindustry.com

Silicon Valley data center market

We've recently been asked specifically about the Silicon Valley data center market (feel free to submit any question you might have either in the comment section or by mail).

In a few words, we believe that the Silicon Valley market mirrors the general situation of the US colo markets: a nice (for the colo Companies active in the market) unbalance between a strong demand and little room available.

This is taken from Data Center Knowledge, and dates back to January 2009:

>>Kelly said the space available at the San Francisco data center wasn’t a sign of weakening demand in the local colocation market, noting recent projections from Tier 1 Research. In a November report, Tier 1 predicted that colocation demand in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area will continue to outpace supply, boosting data center utilization from the current 70 percent to 95 percent by 2012.

The credit crunch contributed to reducing new builds.

Equinix is among the few Companies who recently built new data centers in the area - and in spite of some pro-active churn, in particular of a wholesale customer, that freed several cabinets in their existing centers, they are looking forward to the opening of the new center, as they are approaching full occupancy.

New builds in the area are now being planned by a few Companies like Digital Realty and Coresite - but that's more of a wholesale approach that will please large customers and let smaller customer looking for the right partner to accomodate their growth needs.

Fixnetix offer co-located connectivity to FX liquidity via Hotspot

from Automated Trader:

London based low latency provider, Fixnetix has announced FX trading connections to Hotspot FX, LLC. are now available with co-location services in NY4, Secaucus, New Jersey.

Fixnetix today announced the availability of connectivity to Hoptspot FX at Equinix NY4 in Secaucus, New Jersey, with Fixnetix citing increasing demand for low latency connectivity to FX liquidity from the electronic trading community.

Growth in algorithmic FX trading has been significant over recent years with some estimates of high frequency trading volumes as high as 40% or more on some platforms, with these percentages expected to be further bolstered by the increasing number of multi-asset class and arbitrage traders looking to dynamically hedge currency risk.

"FX is quickly becoming an equal player to all other asset classes which means having the same level of latency and reliability demands, as regulators appear to be showing increased interest in this asset class"

"Fixnetix strives to provide the most optimal trading solutions for our customer base of banks, funds and prop shops worldwide," adds Hugh Hughes, Chief Executive of Fixnetix. "We are proud to provide low latency connectivity to Hotspot and multiple asset classes as our FX service offering is stronger than ever with our recent alliance to NY-based Market Factory, an FX feed handler allowing for buy side and sell side instant access, thereby increasing counterparty diversity and liquidity."

Ingestible Surgical Robots—Hard To Swallow Concept?

from singulatityhub.com:

>>Medical robots are advancing at phenomenal speed, and within years micro-sized robots could be assisting surgeons with operations from inside their patients. Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna’s CRIM Lab in Italy has developed a robot called ARES (Assembling Reconfigurable Endoluminal Surgical System) that will be assembled inside the human body. This modular design is leading the way for a new breed of device that may one day take the place of our most trusted surgeons’ hands. ARES may only be a concept at present, but the project represents amazing new possibilities in the field of robotic surgery.

...

Ingestible robot surgery puts robots further out of grasp—the only connection being a screen facsimile of the patient’s interior. While haptic technology may eventually solve sensory deprivation in the operating room, no usable methods exist.

No, it’s not a LEGO space station. This is ARES, the self-assembling robot you may someday have to swallow.

If 6, Q4 = 4+6 = 10 and 2010 total=30

CK installed in previous years:
2006=28
2007=32
2008=31
2009=36

It is almost certain CK installed in 2010 will be less than 2007, or even less than 2006!

supply-demand imbalance

looking forward to this week's articles at Data Center Knowledge:

>>Bankruptcy filings for data center and telcom providers have been rare in recent years, but were common in the dot-bomb meltdown of 2001-2003, when providers such as Exodus, MFN/AboveNet, WorldCom and Relera filed for Chapter 11, largely from the financial stress of heavy borrowing to build data centers and networks. That overbuilding resulted in a huge imbalance between supply and demand.

Is there any chance of similar supply-demand imbalance today? We’ll examine that issue this week on DCK.
