Nokia N8 review

Keyboard hell

The on-screen keyboard on the N8 also feels like an afterthought. In portrait mode, it's the 12-key alphanumeric kind, which takes ages to use and is an unwelcome blast from the past. We've seen usable Qwerty keyboards on touchscreens that are narrower than the N8's, and we wish Nokia had given this kind of keyboard a try.

We spent ages searching for the option to turn off the haptic feedback, but it wasn't under 'touch input' under 'settings' in the 'phone' menu -- instead, you have to change this option individually several times in each of the phone's profiles. You may love haptic feedback -- we think it feels like there's a small cockroach living in your phone -- but, whatever you're looking for, the N8 makes things too hard to find.

Virtual brain surgery centre opens in Montreal

Canadian surgeons can now practise virtual brain surgery before using their scalpels on real patients.

The first of seven virtual-reality brain surgery training centres across the country opened officially Wednesday at the neurosurgical simulation centre in McGill University's Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (the Neuro), said a release from the National Research Council.

The simulator uses "haptic" hardware that allows a surgeon to feel sensations of moving and touching objects, like the vibration of the tip of an instrument or the difference in resistance between the more fibrous and softer parts of a tumour being removed.

Nokia touchscreen creates texture illusion

Elsewhere in the technology sector, people familiar with the matter said New York-based Baker Capital, which specialises in communications industry investing, has hired Morgan Stanley to explore a sale of Interxion, the Amsterdam-based data-centre operator.

The potential sale comes on top of preparations for a U.S. IPO: Interxion filed a draft registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in May.

Interxion's listed peers include Britain's Telecity Group Plc and Equinix Inc of the U.S. It could entice trade rivals and private equity bidders such as Advent International, Apax and Bridgepoint Capital , these people said.

However, some of the people cautioned Baker sought a high price -- equivalent to more than 10 times the business's EBITDA -- which could deter bidders. That could spell a price tag of roughly 780 million euros or more, based on Interxion's second-quarter adjusted EBITDA of 19.6 million euros (16.4 million pounds).

Interxion declined to comment. Baker Capital founder John Baker did not respond to a request for comment.

Verizon is still considering whether to subsidize the device, a person familiar with the matter said.

The CyberKnife, a robotic radiosurgery system at Saint Francis will be the fourth CyberKnife in Missouri, Bjelich said. The CyberKnife is an alternative to traditional surgery in the treatment of tumors. It uses beams of radiation to destroy cancerous cells, Bjelich said. There are only about 100 such systems in the United States.

Indian doctors to bring robotic cancer surgery to Uganda

Equinix’s new enterprise strategy

Obviously, Equinix is a well established name among the wholesale department of carriers, but now the company is increasing its focus on the enterprise sales unit within carriers. In this respect, Equinix is putting together a Web portal that helps enterprise sales division within carriers to quickly identify potential Carrier Ethernet partners to support their RFPs for corporations.

What is more interesting is that Equinix is now targeting enterprises directly. Patterson revealed to CommsDay International that the company has even appointed a new general manager for enterprise sales, who will be responsible for driving sales directly into enterprises.

Interestingly, Equinix did go about developing this service on its own, but instead found out from its customers that this was being deployed.

“The enterprises that we are doing this for now, we didn’t actively seek them out, they just kind of fell in our laps. And then we start talking to this guys and they are saying ‘we are getting so much value from that,’ and we say, ‘well, let’s write that down, maybe we have something here’,” he said. “Now we have this reference architecture on enterprise WAN hubs, that our sales force that is focused on enterprise is actually, proactively, going to enterprise and getting that message out. For a long time, we have been focus on the wholesale carrier space, we weren’t focus on this value that enterprises can drive from us.”
