>>Radiosurgery for the Entire Body Reaches Birmingham
"It is just a matter of letting physicians know that it is now available," says Swaid N. Swaid, MD, the neurosurgeon behind bringing a Cyberknife System to the area and Medical Director for the new facility. "Many of them already know the advantages it brings to their patients, but now it's here."
CyberKnife, like the Gamma Knife, uses precise, powerful beams of radiation to destroy lesions and tumors while protecting the surrounding normal tissues, reaching previously inoperable tumors. However, unlike the Gamma Knife that can only treat the cranial region, the CyberKnife "does not care where the tumors are located, it can attack them anywhere in the body," Swaid says.
In the treatment room at Cyberknife of Birmingham, the new home of this technology, the size and sleekness of the machine dominate. But when in motion, the robotic system resembles more of a graceful, abstract bird silently moving an outsized head at, what looks like, impossible angles.
