On April 23, Equinix (EQIX) and Switch and Data (SDXC) announced the closing of the Department of Justice investigation of Equinix's acquisition of Switch and Data.
The merger officially closed on April 30, 2010, and it may be worth looking at the new footprint of data centers that the combined Company is now offering in the North American market.
With this move, Equinix added 34 facilities in 22 markets in the U.S. and Canada, or about one million gross square feet of data center capacity, bringing the total global footprint to 87 data centers in 35 markets and more than six million square feet across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
If we look at the latest numbers released by the Companies, Switch and Data had about 8,920 cabinet equivalents billing in the 1Q 2010, and an inventory available of about 5,080 cabinets.
Equinix ended the 1Q 2010 with about 23,600 cabinet equivalents billing in the U.S., and a further inventory of about 5,900 cabinets, half of them already pre-assigned (all numbers exclude new expansions forecasted for the remaining of the year).
In other words, with this acquisition Equinix almost doubled the inventory of cabinet equivalents available in the North American market. Assuming all cabinets could be sold overnight, at an average of $ 2,000 per month (probably a conservative number), the combined Company has, from day one, and without further expansions, the capacity to add an annual revenue rate of about $ 263 million.
