Immersion 1Q results: unexpected upside

Immersion (IMMR) reported 1Q 2010 results on May 6 (see Company’s P/R and Seeking Alpha transcripts).

Let's go through some of the highlights:

  • Revenues were $9.7 million, an increase of 29% compared to revenues of $7.5 million for the 1Q of 2009 and an increase of 41% compared to $6.9 million in the 4Q 2009;
  • Net loss for the first quarter, was $(2.7) million, or $(0.09) per share - however, this result was impacted by about $1,6 million of costs related to the recent investigation/restatement;
  • The Company ended the quarter with $ 64,6 million of cash and cash equivalents, a slight increase on the $ 63,7 million available at year's end (as a reminder, Immersion has no debt)
  • Immersion completed the build-out of its senior management team with the appointment of a new CFO, Shum Mukherjee
  • The annual target of revenues of $25 million to $30 million was reaffirmed, with revenues in the 2Q to be expected in the range of $6.2 million to $6.7 million (more on this later on)

As some of you may remember, Immersion had given guidance for the 1Q during its last conference call:

While we don’t expect to provide quarterly guidance regularly, given that we are at March 30, it seems prudent to give you a little color on expected Q1 results. We anticipate total revenues of approximately $8 million with royalty and license revenues comprising approximately $6 million.

Given the fact that guidance was given so much into the 1Q, the actual numbers came as a surprise. During the Q&A session, this was the subject of a specific question by Mark Argento (emphasis added):

Mark Argento – Craig-Hallum

And I apologize should I hopped on the call a little late, but you guys reported almost close to 10 million, what was the delta given the fact that you guys gave guidance late in the quarter that ended up driving that an extra almost $2 million in upside of the revenues?

Victor Viegas

I think we said we were somewhere in the $7 million to $8 million range was our guidance. And at the time that was about estimates that I had, we ended up the quarter at $9.7 million as you stated. When we announced that we’re transitioning out of the medical product line business there was some concern that the orders for that that market area would dry up or change significantly. At the time we didn’t have all the royalty reports in hand, we hadn’t yet done full analysis of all the contract revenue, and there’s always late in the quarter, contractual commitments, whether it’s delivering a product, or achieving a milestone, and those are sometimes that risk.

And so, again, when I gave the guidance it was my best estimate at the time it turns out this quarter, there’re obviously quite a few things that occurred late such as the product fitments for our medical and deliverables and contract signing. So, very happy to be pleased to report on a positive in the upside of that estimate.

Mark Argento – Craig-Hallum

I just want to make sure was it like a one-time event that came in or it was just the business outperformance; it sounds like that’s the case.

Victor Viegas

It was not any one-time event, it was solid results across the board, and again, if revenue comes in from royalty reports, contracts, service agreements, NRE agreements and product shipments, and so I think you’ll see a lot of hard work from a lot of people resulted in a good quarter, but not a one-time event.

If we have a look at the historical numbers, this looks definitely like a break out quarter (click to enlarge):

As we know, Immersion is transitioning toward a licensing model only, so it may be appropriate to focus on royalties and license revenues only:

If we go through the 10Q, we learn that this result was due to an increase in sales in most segments (pg.31):

Royalty and license revenues increased by $2.5 million mainly due to increases in royalty and license revenue from mobility, gaming, touchscreen, integrated circuit, and automotive licensees. We expect royalty revenue to be a significant component of our revenue as our technology continues to be included in more products along all lines of our Touch business.

The effect of seasonality in these numbers must not be forgotten (the year end holiday period has a positive effect on sales of a few verticals like gaming and mobile phones, whose royalties are recognized in the 1Q), still we see it as a positive that even internal Company's expectations were beaten when the actual sales results came in.

A few words about the medical segment. As we know, Immersion sold the Endoscopy, Endovascular, and Laparoscopy medical simulation product line to CAE Healthcare on March 30. The selling price is about $ 1,6 million, and the agreement also provides for the transfer of approximately 35 employees to CAE as well as distribution agreements and customer relationships.

As a result of this shift to a license and royalty model, Immersion is expected to reduce expenses of about $ 1 million a quarter:

Aaron Husock – Lanexa Global Management

Okay. So was the medical related OpEx only a $l million in the quarter, it’s roughly a third of the workforce, right?

Victor Viegas

You’ve got some of the people are in the cost of goods sold, so, it’s a different mix and I don’t have a precise set of numbers, we don’t’ really disclose that that closely. So it’s in that $1 million range is what I’m using to arrive at $8 million in total touch expenses.

Another side effect of the sale of the medical segment to CAE is that Immersion will not be receiving royalties in the 2Q related to this segment (10Q, pg. 15):

The Company will receive quarterly payments under the license arrangement starting July 1, 2010.

While this may sound logical (CAE royalties, like for all other licensees, will be recognized in the subsequent quarter), it will effect, short term, Immersion's results in the 2Q, as the Company will receive no royalties but will lose a business segment that contributed about $ 2 million in sales in the 1Q 2010. This might, together with seasonality, partially explain the guidance issued by the Company.

Aaron Husock – Lanexa Global Management

Okay. Looking at the guidance, would you say that $7.7 million is kind of the right number for us to compare your guidance to, $7.7 million in revenue in Q1, is that kind of the steady state number that we should be comparing the $6.2 million to $6.7 million?

Victor Viegas

Yes, I think that’s the right comparison. I think the $7.7 million you arrive at that as a $9.7 million minus the products revenue from the products that we transition to CAE. So I think $7.7 million compared to $6.2 million to $6.7 million for Q2 that's an apples-to-apples comparison.

During the conference call, a new licensee was revealed:

Also during the quarter Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) became a new licensee in the office product sector and they recently showed of their OmniTouch 8082 IP phone featuring Immersion haptic technology. The user interface features a 7-inch wide capacity of Touchscreen that is LED backlit and includes context-aware, sensory feedback with Immersion’s TouchSense technology.

The product is very interesting, and opens a new market to Immersion - here is how Alcatel-Lucent describes this new category of Smart Phones:

ORLANDO, March 23, 2010 – Alcatel-Lucent announced today an innovative new class of “Smart DeskPhones” that transforms a desk phone into a rich communication experience beyond what mobile smartphones provide. The new phone brings together enterprise reliability, fast, convenient access to multimedia communications capabilities and web applications to create personalized mashups or industry-tailored applications.

The Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch™ 8082 My IC Phone ushers in a new era of software access and sophistication never before seen in a desktop phone, and redefines what users can do from their desk. Unlike traditional desk phones, the new device offers an open platform and an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display. Powered by pioneering new software and an open interface, it has a seven-inch wide capacitive touch screen that is LED backlit and includes context aware sensory feedback, as well as connectivity to Bluetooth and USB devices.

It must be noted that the product will start shipping in late 2010 – a remaining issue with Immersion is the long selling cycle from product development to the time royalties are recognized, as also described for the semiconductor partners in this section of the Q&A:

Aaron Husock – Lanexa Global Management

Okay. Just one more, if you look at your partnerships with the different semiconductor vendors, Atmel, Cypress, IDT, and now Renesas , was there any revenue from those partnerships in the March quarter and if not when do you think you will start to see some level of revenue there?

Victor Viegas

I don’t know if I have a number for you or if there was any revenue in the quarter I can tell you Renesas has been shipping chips, they have a product in the market and there’re consumer products. I know there is a P&D [ph] product in the market, so we’ve been generating revenue from Renesas here for a bit. In terms of Cypress and Atmel, I think those two products are expected to come later this year.

Even the newly announced “HD haptics” solutions, which should bring higher per unit royalties, will mainly have an effect on revenues later in the year:

Our latest haptic solutions are being very well received by our current and prospective OEMs, with TouchSense 4000 currently available and shipping in our partners’ products. And TouchSense 5000 expected to ship in commercial mobile handsets in the second half of this year.

As the Company isn't exactly on many investors' radar screen, Immersion will also be soon presenting at several conferences, like the JMP Securities 9th Annual Research Conference, the MDB Bright Lights IP Conference and the TechAmerica Growth Cap Financial Conference.

As a last side note, a new candidate for the BoD has been nominated:

the Company’s candidate for the Board seat to be vacated by Rob is Dave Sugishita. David currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Atmel, where he chairs the Audit and Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee and is a Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee for Ditech Networks.

It is not clear if Ramius was involved in this decision – as a reminder this fund took a large position a few months ago, and has recently been selling a few shares, slightly reducing its position in the Company.

Where are salesforce.com data centres located?

from forcedotcom.com blog:

>>With this in mind, I'm sure that the majority of salesforce users frankly don't care where the data centres are providing that the service is available. However as a SFDC admin / developer / geek I'm interested in this stuff, and I think its useful for admins to have a basic understanding in case it comes up (which it undoubtedly will). The diagram below shows a graphical representation of where salesforce.com data centres are located:

Main Production DC:
San Jose, California
Asia Pacific Production DC: Singapore
Backup Production DC: Reston, Virginia
R&D Lab & Tape Archive: San Francisco, California

Salesforce do not own any of these data centres, they use co-location facilities that at present are being run by a company called Equinix. For further details about why Equinix were chosen, and for much more information on force.com infrastructure I recommend watching the video below. This is a recording taken from Dreamforce '09 - a presentation was given by Claus Moldt, SVP Technical Operations at salesforce.com (Claus previously worked at eBay where he was responsible for their techincal infrastructure).

Equinix Continues European Expansion as Fourth Data Center in Zurich Opens

New Equinix ZH4 International Business Exchange data center to provide 2,300 gross square meters of additional capacity in Switzerland

Zurich, Switzerland, May 5, 2010 – Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), a provider of global data center services, today announced it has opened its fourth International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data center in Zurich, Switzerland, more than doubling its capacity in the city. The new 2,300 gross square meter IBX data center, called ZH4, has been built to meet the rising demand for premium colocation and interconnection data center services in the region, particularly from global and local network service providers and financial services firms. The $13.5m investment in the ZH4 IBX data center is part of Equinix’s $2.0 billion expansion program to grow data center operations globally between 2007 and 2010.

The addition of Equinix’s fourth IBX data center in Zurich provides extra capacity for approximately 500 cabinet equivalents, increasing the company’s overall data center space in this strategic market to a total of 4,760 square meters.

Located in central Zurich on the same campus as Equinix’s ZH1 and ZH2 IBX data centers and just 1.5 km from the nearby ZH3 IBX data center, the new ZH4 IBX data center builds on the rich network density at Equinix’s existing facilities, providing customers with a wide range of connectivity options and immediate access to more than 70 networks. Carriers operating within the Zurich campus include Belgacom ICS (International Carrier Services), Cablecom, Cogent Communications, Gas&Com, Global Crossing, Level 3 Communications, Sunrise, and VTLWaveNet, part of the Viatel Group.

The ZH4 IBX data center also offers a variety of other premium data center services including colocation, interconnection and peering, direct cross-connects between networks, and access to the Equinix Exchange central switching fabric. To ensure resilient dual-site solutions, all four of Equinix IBX data centers in Zurich are connected via redundant networks.

“At a time when demand for data center space in Switzerland is at an all time high, we are delighted to offer our customers and prospects a new IBX data center which provides increased capacity, security and resilience to meet the critical needs of their operations,” said Frits van der Graaff, general manager for Equinix in Switzerland.“Based in central Zurich, the ZH4 IBX data center will be able to support the established telecommunications and financial industries, as well as attract customers from other growth sectors.”

The ZH4 IBX data center provides customers with a highly resilient yet energy efficient data center infrastructure, providing industry leading uptime with a standard provision of two N+1 Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) to each cabinet. Alongside Equinix’s three other Zurich based IBX data centers, ZH4 operates entirely on ecologically produced energy generated from solar and hydro power, as certified by Naturemade Star, the Swiss label for green power production and green electricity products.

“Our investment within Switzerland marks our ongoing commitment to expanding operations not only within Europe, but globally,” said Eric Schwartz, president, Equinix Europe. “Our global reach means that customers looking to expand their operations can confidently grow with us knowing that we can support their business needs now and in the future.”

NYSE, colocation providers battle it out on data center regulation

>>NYSE, colocation providers battle it out on data center regulation

NYSE tries to strong-arm on standards
The NYSE has built and is equipping a 400,000-square-foot data center in Mahwah, N.J., about 35 miles from Wall Street. It plans to use only 40% of the data center floor space for its own equipment; the rest will be designated for colocation.
I don't see any need for any type of regulation.
Jeff Paschke,
senior data center analyst, Tier 1 Research

The benefits to hosting at a specific exchange are quicker access to market data and transactions. But some financial companies choose third-party data center providers such as Equinix because these third parties have access to multiple trading platforms rather than just, for instance, the NYSE.

Third-party data center colocation providers say their facilities provide hosting for multiple industries, not just the financial sector. And they argue that their ability to provide third-party hosting for multiple exchanges helps offset the benefits that exchange customers get by hosting their servers directly at the exchange.

"The New York Stock Exchange has opted to build out its own colocation facilities in New York and London," said John Knuff, the global business development director at Equinix. "Since their core offering is exchanges and they are granted licenses issued by the government, they operate under regulatory statutes and have to operate within a tight framework."

Will upgrade cancer care facility: Yogesh Bhel

PIMPRI-Chinchwad Mayor Yogesh Behl on Saturday said the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will make all efforts to upgrade the health facilities required to treat cancer patients. “We are trying to set up a cancer hospital and get advanced machinery to treat those afflicted by the disease,” he said.

Inaugurating the Free Shri D M More Medical Information and Help Centre at Kasarwadi on Saturday, the mayor said the civic body was in talks with corporates and social organisations to get the CYBERKNIFE machinery which is known to successfully treat patients. “Since the PCMC itself is struggling for funds, we are trying to get outside help to provide best medical care for those afflicted by the life-threatening disease,” the mayor said amidst applause.

Behl said NCP chief Sharad Pawar had directed the civic body to set up a hospital exclusively to treat cancer patients. “Till we the set up such a hospital, our efforts will be to upgrade the facility at our existing oncology unit at YCM Hospital,” Behl said, pointing out the medical information centre would indeed benefit citizens who had to run one hospital for proper diagnosis and medical care.

Equinix chief gives reassurance on pricing

from FT.com, an interview with Equinix Ceo:

>>Equinix chief gives reassurance on pricing

The largest independent operator of data centres with fast internet connections would not raise prices after completing the acquisition of its nearest US competitor on Friday, Steve Smith, Equinix chief executive, told the Financial Times.

Mr Smith’s pledge should provide reassurance to Equinix customers who had complained to the US Justice Department about the concentration of power in quality co-location centres, where companies rent high-security computer storage and pay for electricity and their choice of telecommunications connections. Regulators had asked for a second tranche of information about the $689m acquisition of Switch and Data Facilities announced in October before approving it a week ago.

...

Mr Smith said that his next big ambition was to capitalise on the demand for data delivered to smartphones and other mobile devices.

That could take the company from a predicted $2bn in annual revenue within five years to $3bn, he said, adding: “Mobile data is a huge opportunity.”

An overview of the “new” Equinix

On April 23, Equinix (EQIX) and Switch and Data (SDXC) announced the closing of the Department of Justice investigation of Equinix's acquisition of Switch and Data.

The merger officially closed on April 30, 2010, and it may be worth looking at the new footprint of data centers that the combined Company is now offering in the North American market.

With this move, Equinix added 34 facilities in 22 markets in the U.S. and Canada, or about one million gross square feet of data center capacity, bringing the total global footprint to 87 data centers in 35 markets and more than six million square feet across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

If we look at the latest numbers released by the Companies, Switch and Data had about 8,920 cabinet equivalents billing in the 1Q 2010, and an inventory available of about 5,080 cabinets.

Equinix ended the 1Q 2010 with about 23,600 cabinet equivalents billing in the U.S., and a further inventory of about 5,900 cabinets, half of them already pre-assigned (all numbers exclude new expansions forecasted for the remaining of the year).

In other words, with this acquisition Equinix almost doubled the inventory of cabinet equivalents available in the North American market. Assuming all cabinets could be sold overnight, at an average of $ 2,000 per month (probably a conservative number), the combined Company has, from day one, and without further expansions, the capacity to add an annual revenue rate of about $ 263 million.

Internet peering: Time for an end to the Gang of Four?

from Australia, Commsday.com:

>>Internet peering: Time for an end to the Gang of Four?

Today, players like Equinix and Pipe Networks may be routing an increasing amount of traffic away from the group, but Pipe CEO Bevan Slattery believes that overall traffic growth still means there’s a problem to be solved. “A lot of it’s being sorted out through peering networks, through ourselves, through the Equinixes of the world – so the amount of traffic as a percentage is decreasing through domestic players but the volume of traffic is still increasing,” he said. “[The Gang of Four] is the one thing that’s been sitting out there for quite some time… and it’s something that needs to be addressed, because right now that’s a tax on bandwidth here in Australia and it’s ridiculous.”

Equinix 1Q results and DoJ green light for the Switch and Data acquisition

Equinix (EQIX) reported 1Q 2010 results on April 21 (see Company's P/R and Seeking Alpha conference call transcripts).

A few days later, Switch and Data (SDXC) announced that the United States Department of Justice had notified Equinix the closing of its investigation with respect to the proposed acquisition of Switch and Data and also that the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Radino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 had been terminated.

The green light from the DoJ allowed the merger to officially close on April 30, 2010.

Further to this news, Switch and Data decided to withhold its 1Q 2010 conference call (results were still filed in a 10-Q form that we'll examine later on in this article).

A quick look at some Equinix metrics disclosed for the 1Q 2010, before we dig deeper into the potential of the two combined Companies (as a reminder, some interesting Equinix non financial metrics are available on the I/R section at this link):

  • Revenues of $248.6 million, a 3% increase over the previous quarter and a 25% increase over the same quarter last year
  • Adjusted EBITDA of $117.3 million, a 5% increase over the previous quarter and a 28% increase over the same quarter last year – as a reminder cash generated from operations represents about 85% of adjusted EBITDA, and came at about $ 100 million in the quarter
  • Increased 2010 annual revenue guidance to $1,065.0 million to $1,080.0 million
  • Increased 2010 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $470.0 million to $480.0 million
  • Basic net income per share was $ 0.36, in spite of acquisition costs of $ 5 million (or almost $ 0.13 per share)
  • Cash gross margins came at 66% (70% in the US), with adjusted EBITDA margins of 47%, and an EBITDA flow through rate of 92%
  • 77 new customer adds, the best result since 3Q 2008
  • Almost half of the remaining available cabinets in the US already pre-assigned
  • a red flag: while the Company added about 500 cabinet equivalents in the quarter, Asia was the main contributor to this result (with about 300 new cabinets), while the U.S. only added about 100 cabinets, ending the quarter with a weighted average cabinet equivalent billing of 23,600 units.

Let's go through some comments made on this specific metric during the conference call:

Keith Taylor - CFO

Despite our revenue growth and strong booking trends across all three regions, the U.S. experience a poor incremental net cabinet billings metric in the quarter both on the quarter end on our weighted average basis against these expectation. This result was created by higher churn occurring at the end of both Q3 and Q4 of 2009 and with the majority of the U.S. regions Q1 bookings occurring in the last month of the quarter.

It muted the underlined performance of this metric. Said differently, we have a healthy backlog of bookings that will turn into billing cabinets into revenues in Q2 and the rest of the year. This result is partially affected by our lack or limited inventory in some of the key markets, including New York thereby our booked incremental sales have yet convert into billing cabinets as would not yet opened in New York-4 Phase III expansion.

This passage from the conference call sounds like saying that the Company is partially suffering from its own success (limited inventory in some key markets), a problem that will be addressed by new openings later in the year and partially also by the addition of inventory available in the SDXC data centers (as Switch and Data had a much lower occupancy rate, in general, see their latest disclosure later on).

More color from Steve Smith, CEO:

we could face some temporary capacity constraints in the middle of the year in three of our six markets, which highlight the importance of bringing on the new capacity in this region as I discussed earlier.

Above all, we would describe this quarter as another very solid one, driven by firm pricing in all markets and good operating leverage. The “weak” (to the Equinix standards) cabinet additions in the USA forced a few analysts, like Oppenheimer's Srinivas Anantha, to talk about “mixed operating metrics”. We see this more like a seasonal/timing issue and remain confident about the Company's potential. Colocation recurring revenues still grew 2,8% Q/Q and 21,5% Y/Y in the US, even in spite of this relatively disappointing number.

Equinix also announced a good sized two phase expansion in Dallas (in spite of Switch and Data's presence in the market already with three sites providing an aggregate of over 70,000 gross square feet of space, with connectivity to 120 networks), and a few other recent openings like the second IBX in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and the third data center in Paris, France.

An update of future IBX openings is available at this link.

Switch and Data reported revenues of $ 56,695 million for the 1Q 2010 (+20% Y/Y), with a 63.7 % occupancy rate. Revenues came slightly shy of analysts' consensus of $ 56,9 million.

Cabinet equivalents billed were 8,920 for the 1Q, with 332 net cabinets added in the period (a confirmation that the north American market remains in good health, in our opinion).

As SDXC disclosed in its 10Q filing (pg. 22):

Approximately 43% of new sales in the three months ended March 31, 2010 were in our new or expanded data centers.

Inventory available is key to good results, right now.

A quick look at the Company’s geographic revenue split (click to enlarge):

The performance in Canada (+75% Y/Y) is even more interesting as Switch and Data recently announced new customer wins and added services in its Toronto data center:

IPC to Provide Low-latency Exchange Interconnection Solutions as First GeoReachSM Participant for Switch and Data’s Toronto’s Financial EcoCenterSM

Switch and Data Announces Opening of its Newest PAIX® Internet Exchange in Toronto to Satisfy Growing Internet Peering Demand in this Key Canadian Market

With combined revenues of over $ 300 million in the 1Q, the “new” Equinix will be facing integration challenges in the close future but also enjoy a strengthened leadership position in the North American market, with potential synergies that will eventually unlock further operational leverage.

In a recent article about the Equinix and Switch and Data combination, TeleGeography described the merger using these words (emphasis added):

Equinix’s acquisition of Switch and Data, which is expected to close on Friday 30 April, will create a colocation services giant that dwarfs its competitors, both in the US and globally. Equinix’s gross floor space will increase from five million to more than six million square feet — approximately three times more than its largest competitor, Telehouse. While Equinix has emerged as by far the largest provider of colocation services, the sector remains highly competitive. In the New York metro area alone, Equinix contends with over 50 competitors.

The main reasons why we remain very positive on the potential future developments for Equinix have already been expressed in several of our recent articles, and may be resumed in the unbalance existing between offer and demand for colocation services (solid momentum), and the fact that the Company has the best management in the industry, with a history of consistent execution, successful integration of acquired Companies, and great insight into customers' needs (80% of new bookings come from the installed base).

As further support of our opinion, we'd like to quote a recent presentation highlighting the main trends in the Internet space.

Arbor Networks, the University of Michigan and Merit Network presented this Two-Year Study of Global Internet Traffic At NANOG47 – here is an interesting chart:

ATLAS Internet Observatory - 2009 Annual Report

As you may understand, a Company like Equinix, with a leadership already established in the sector, and that has been capable of growing its inventory even during the credit crunch, sounds like the player who should benefit the most form this trend.

For a different opinion about the colo market, however, it may be worth quoting Gartner's Lydia Leong and her recent blog post:

Getting real on colocation

Of late, I’ve had a lot of people ask me why my near-term forecast for the colocation market in the United States is so much lower (in many cases, half the growth rate) when compared with those produced by competing analyst firms, Wall Street, and so forth.

Without giving too much information (as you’ll recall, Gartner likes its bloggers to preserve client value by not delving too far into details for things like this), the answer to that comes down to:

  1. Gartner’s integrated forecasting approach

  2. Direct insight into end-user buying behavior

  3. Tracking the entire market, not just the traditional “hot” colo markets

While a more conservative approach to the sector's potential may be justified, Equinix's proven capacity to grow beyond market average must not be forgotten, and the Company's presence in the most important markets (where it represents the hub of the largest networks and ISPs), and its capacity to build specific eco-systems (think about the financial sector, where being in close proximity to the exchanges is a must for customers) represent a strong differentiator for Equinix, in our opinion, giving the Company a premium to its competitors, and allowing ambitious growth targets.

an interview with Euan S. Thomson, Accuray's CEO:

>>Euan S. Thomson understands the opportunities that growth brings and, well, the challenges.

In eight years, the president and CEO grew Accuray Inc.’s employee base from 50 to 450 and the number of customers from five in the U.S. to 200 in 20 countries.

“As you grow, and as you grow that fast, it’s inevitable that you get cultural challenges,” Thomson says. “Managing a culture change as well as managing a company at each level that it happens to be at, I think, is probably the biggest challenge.”

BOX Launches High-Capacity Operations Platform - 3x Faster Than Current Architecture

29/04/10

The Boston Options Exchange Group, LLC (BOX) announced today at the Options Industry Conference it will launch a new operations platform on Monday, May 10. BOX has partnered with Equinix, Inc., a provider of global data center services, to create an ultra-fast matching engine within the Equinix NY4 International Business Exchange (IBX®) data center.

“BOX’s new operations platform demonstrates our ongoing commitment to reinvestment in our infrastructure with the addition of a high performance trading environment that is value-driven for our clients,” said Tony McCormick, BOX CEO. “BOX participants will see consistent response times and message allocation that will meet or exceed market demand at a speed 3x faster than our current architecture.”

With the new operations platform, BOX participants can expect to benefit from:
  • Response times of less than one millisecond
  • Speed of a million quotes per second
  • Capacity of a 100,000 orders per second
  • Allocation of 5,000 messages for every logical connection

BOX’s ultra-low latency matching engine can be accessed from hubs in Chicago and New York. Participants wishing to connect at NY4 can arrange space directly through Equinix.

"TMX Group is both the majority shareholder as well as the technology provider to BOX. With today's announcement we are demonstrating our continued commitment to efficient innovations and improvements that drive value for BOX and their customers," said Alain Miquelon, TMX Group Head of Derivatives. "As we work with BOX management to identify and capitalize on new growth opportunities, these platform improvements serve to further strengthen our competitive advantage in the market."

BOX order matching is executed on price-time priority with no order cancellation fees. BOX’s key feature is its Price Improvement Period (PIP) auction, which has returned over $270 million in savings to customers since BOX’s launch. BOX offers multiple competing market makers and has no seats to buy or lease. BOX has very simple fee structures.

Data Centers Not Owned by Exchanges Can ‘Tilt’ Field, NYSE Says

from Bloomberg Businessweek:

>>Data Centers Not Owned by Exchanges Can ‘Tilt’ Field, NYSE Says

NYSE Euronext, the largest stock- market operator, said U.S. regulators should boost oversight of the data centers providing services to brokers and high- frequency traders to ensure that the companies operate fairly.

NYSE, which is building two data centers outside New York and London, said in a letter published on the Securities and Exchange Commission’s website yesterday that rival offerings from Savvis Inc., Equinix Inc. and Telx Group Inc. should be forced to operate as facilities of regulated exchanges to prevent a “tilted playing field.” The access they provide to the main computers of exchanges, called co-location, allows firms to transact orders faster.

...

Lowering Costs for Customers

Equinix, a provider of co-location and connection services between 18 markets in the U.S., Europe and Asia, also told the SEC that data centers shouldn’t be controlled by exchanges. Independent data centers lower costs for customers by enabling them to connect through multiple network providers and choosing which products they want, the Foster City, California-based firm said in an April 20 letter to the commission.

“It is not appropriate to consider Equinix data centers as ‘facilities’ of an exchange or trading center, even if exchanges have good reason to consider them as a potential new profit center,” the company said. It said that exchanges moving into this business could force customers to “purchase additional services in order to gain the benefits inherent in data center co-location and interconnectivity.”

Immersion sees wave of touch-feedback smartphones coming

from VentureBeat.com - HT to cellodude on the IV MB:

>>Immersion sees wave of touch-feedback smartphones coming

When Nokia announced its new N8 smartphone this week, it was another step forward for touch feedback. Immersion confirmed that it has provided “haptics” technology that is more accurate than other touch-sensation technologies used in the past.

The N8 uses the touch sensors not only for number dialing, but as a feedback system within the user interface itself that tells you when you have scrolled to the right point on the screen or accomplished similar tasks. As such, it’s one of the first to have more extensive integration of touch technology. The new Nokia phone, which debuts in the third quarter, is one of a number of new models using a brand new “high definition” touch sensor and vibration technology from Immersion, which designs the component technology and licenses it for others to manufacture and put into products.

Cineteck France Selects Equinix to Deliver Premium Hosting Services to Its Customers

Cineteck France Selects Equinix to Deliver Premium Hosting Services to Its Customers

Resilient operations and access to Tier-1 service providers are key factors in Cineteck’s choice

Paris, France, April 28, 2010 - Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), a provider of global data center services, has today announced that Cineteck France, a specialist in website hosting for enterprises and individuals, has chosen to host its Web and application servers in a private cage at Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX®) data center (PA2) located in Saint-Denis, in the suburbs of Paris, France. By locating business-critical infrastructure at the PA2 data center, Cineteck France can now directly interconnect with many of France’s leading telecom and service providers, enabling the hosting specialist to sign Internet access and private network contracts at highly competitive rates. Cineteck France has also chosen Equinix due to its aggressive expansion program, which means it is ideally placed to match Cineteck France’s 2010 plans to grow its own hosting operations.

Based in Rodez, France, Cineteck France delivers dedicated and shared hosting solutions to SMEs, Web agencies and individuals. The company also offers platforms to host collaborative applications such as ERP, groupware and CRM solutions. In order to safeguard its equipment as well as provide high quality and highly available services to its customers, Cineteck France decided to entrust its infrastructure to Equinix, benefiting from remote monitoring and administration, and, at the same time, capitalizing on Equinix’s established community of network providers.

“At Cineteck France, we are focused on ensuring that our customers are satisfied and our commitments honoured,” explains Jean-Luc Montjaux, general manager, Cineteck France. “We selected Equinix for its top-quality operations in terms of design, energy savings, redundant architecture, and the presence of all the major service providers as customers. The grouping of Tier-1 carriers in a single data center is a definite advantage. This helped us negotiate optimum rates for our Internet access and private network by benchmarking suppliers, and allowed us to choose the connectivity solution that best met our requirements, in this case, fiber optic. Our collaboration with Equinix has proven very satisfactory to date.”

Equinix’s IBX data centers offer premier levels of physical security, power availability and savings, as well as infrastructure flexibility. All centers are 9001/2008 certified, a quality standard known globally and supported by the International Standards Organization.

Equinix’s interconnection solutions take advantage of the presence of all major global IT networks within their IBX® data centers. These solutions enable more efficient and reliable data exchange between companies and their customers, and facilitate network scalability to seamlessly meet enterprises growing needs.

“We are very happy to be a trusted partner for Cineteck France,” says Michel Brignano, General Manager, Equinix in France. “Organizations, regardless of their size or growth requirements, can depend on our services as they are designed with excellence, choice, flexibility, scalability and affordability in mind.”
