Immersion 2Q 2010 Earnings Preview

Immersion (IMMR) will be reporting 2Q 2010 results on August 5th.

The Company surprised on the upside in the 1Q, for a combination of factors that included a stronger than expected performance in product sales, and also some seasonality (as royalties on products like mobile phones and gaming, that are sold in higher volumes in the Christmas holiday period, are recognized in the subsequent quarter).

Immersion is transitioning toward a licensing model only.

The Company recently completed the sale of its medical division to CAE Healthcare (CAE), and for this reason it will not recognize any product sale, from this segment, in the quarter. It must be noted, however, that due to the delayed timing of royalty recognition, it will not recognize any license revenue stream from CAE, too, in the 2Q.

In our opinion, it is important to remind that it would be fair, for a real apple to apple comparison, to analyze 2Q results against the 1Q excluding product sales (that accounted for about $2 Million in the 1Q), and keeping in mind that seasonality and the lack of royalties from the medical division sold to CAE will certainly play an important role in the final numbers. We are obviously hoping that management will give out as many details as possible on the matter to help investors get a proper understanding of the Company's performance.

During the last conference call, Immersion guided for revenues in the $6.2 to $6.7 Million range (from Seeking Alpha 1Q conference call transcripts):

Victor Viegas - CEO

In terms of our near-term outlook, we would expect total revenues in Q2 to be in the range of $6.2 million to $6.7 million, down on a comparative basis sequentially, reflecting our transition to a licensing model as well as typical downward seasonal trend based on our revenue recognition.

Analysts estimate revenues of $ 6.5 Million, and EPS of ($0.07).

On the cost side, the Company should start showing much lower operating expenses, due in part to the reduced headcount, following the transaction with CAE Healthcare, and also to lower legal and administrative fees.

Immersion ended the 1Q with $ 64,6 million of cash and cash equivalents, and while we do expect some cash burn in this quarter, it is a Company's target to reduce costs in order to be cash flow positive with revenues of just around $7 Million a quarter.

During the quarter, the Company issued a limited number of press releases, mainly related to the Medical segment.

Immersion announced a license agreement with SOFAR S.p.A., a leading Italian manufacturer of medical devices for minimally invasive surgery, and, probably more important, the conclusion of a litigation with Simbionix USA Corporation, the world's leading provider of simulation and training products for medical professionals and the healthcare industry, that has now become a licensee, too.

As the official flow of information from the Company was relatively quiet in the quarter, we will be looking for more information about the sectors Immersion is targeting from some of its licensees.

As we write, one of Immersion's partners in the semiconductor segment, Cypress Corporation (CY) reported 1Q results. Some of their comments may be worth a quote (from Seeking Alpha transcripts, our comments in Italic):

Brad Buss – CFO

We expect record revenue for PSoC in TrueTouch in the third quarter and for the entire fiscal year 2010. (see: Next-Generation Cypress TrueTouch™ and CapSense® Solutions Enable Innovative Products with Tactile Feedback to Improve User Experience)

Ashish Rao – Credit Suisse

Could you update us on where the TrueTouch revenues were for the quarter and if you’ve gone past the customer pick up that you saw in the March quarter and also as you look ahead to 2011, how do you view the tablet opportunity versus the predominantly handset smartphones today?

Norm Taffe

Hi, Ashish. This is Norm. So, I think the second part of your question was related to what kind of momentum we’re seeing in terms in the March quarter and going forward on touch. My answer to that is we continue to see great momentum there. In fact, we said another design win record in Q2 as far as wins in the touch space.

It is also interesting to note that both Immersion and Cypress seem to share the same interest as far as new segments to pursue for their products (emphasis added):

T.J. Rodgers

Lucky Gold Star put our CapSense into their new flat-panel TV. That’s a big trend right now. When you have a sleek black flat-panel TV, you don’t want ordinary knobs and buttons sticking out of the bottom. So we’re getting a lot of CapSense business on that.

In addition, we’ve gotten automotive qualified PSoC is capable of doing can and win, PSoC 3 can and rest are the win, which are the automotive bus standards, and that means that we allow quick integration of touchscreens into automobiles. We’ve been qualified, automotively qualified and our biggest win is the Chevrolet Volt, the new electric car where we are in the center panel of the car.

The mention of the Automotive market is interesting, as Immersion has been working with Visteon (VSTNQ) for quite some time.

For those who love speculations, we could mention that Brad W. Buss, Cypress Corporation's CFO, is also sitting on the BoD of Tesla Motors (TSLA), another car producer who might implement Immersion's product in its new Model S (this quote is taken from Immersion's 1Q 2009 conference call):

Clent Richardson

And Road and Track Magazine just gave a sneak peak at the new 2012 Tesla Model S highlighting its use of Haptics, noting a 17 inch touch screen entertainment system in the center console with Haptic interface.

Turning back to Cypress Semiconductors, a few more quotes about the trends in touchscreens, which confirm a good momentum in general and new customers' wins in the mobile phone arena for Cypress (emphasis added) - will Immersion benefit from this?

Adam Benjamin – Jefferies

Got you. And then Norm, a question for you on TrueTouch. You’ve kind of talked about $100 million as a number for this year. Based on what you’re seeing now plus or minus what do you think?

Norm Taffe

Based on what we’re doing right now, we’re still on track to more than double what we did last year. It’s not clear yet whether we’ll look to get all the way up to the $100 number but we’re certainly on our plan more for than double this year.

Brad Buss

And I think importantly, we added, we received the first significant orders from two more of the top eight handset suppliers this quarter, which are going to ramp for us in Q3 and Q4. So now we are shipping volume in Q3 at five of the top eight handset suppliers on touch and so the backlog is really starting to ramp for us.

TeleGeography Submarine Cable and Equinix Data Center map

We would like to offer you a limited edition 2010 TeleGeography Submarine Cable and Equinix Data Center map.

THE NEED FOR SPEED

>>Here at StockCharts, we are constantly looking for ways to get you our charts as quickly and consistently as possible. Much of the past two months has been spent adding and testing two different "web acceleration" technologies to our site in an effort to reduce the time it take for our charts to move across the Internet.

The first technology we tried came from a company called Akamai. While this technology works well for other websites and, at first, showed some promising results for us, when we dug deeper we discovered that it really wouldn't work well for us mainly because when the market is open our charts cannot be cached (i.e., saved for later reuse).

The second technology looks much more promising however. It is called "XIP" and it comes from InterNAP, the same company that currently connects us to the Internet. XIP dynamically adjusts the low-level settings that control how data flows across the Internet. It works best when transmitting large items (such as a chart) across long distances. The bigger the object and/or the longer the distance, the more XIP helps.

(Another really nice thing about XIP is that it doesn't require any changes to your computer - it's a change that we make here in our datacenter. No install, no settings to mess with, just improved speed - pretty nice!)

At this point we've completed our internal testing of XIP and the results look good. In our tests, XIP reduced the time it takes to send out our charts by 30 to 40% in most cases. That said, we now need your help. We want to make sure that if we switch to XIP it won't cause any problems for our users.

Equinix 2Q 2010 Earnings Preview

Equinix (EQIX) will be reporting 2Q 2010 results on Wednesday, July 28th.

This call will be particularly interesting as Equinix completed the acquisition of Switch and Data in the quarter - while we do not expect that the two Companies might have already developed significant synergies, we are sure that the conference call will be useful to give investors additional color on the status of the integration.

According to its updated guidance given on May 7th, Equinix expects revenues to be in the range of $296.0 to $298.0 million, with cash gross margins of about 64%. This forecast reflects a closing date of April 30, 2010 for the Switch and Data acquisition, which therefore will contribute to Equinix’s results from May 1, 2010 onwards only.

As a side note, the strength of the US dollar (or, said in a different way, the recent weakness of the Euro, which represented about 16% of revenues for the former stand alone Equinix) might have negatively impacted Equinix's non-US results for the quarter, as guidance was given using, for example, $1.36 dollar to the Euro.

On a same currency basis, we expect Equinix's performance in Europe and Asia to show very good strength, in spite of currency conversions.

Analysts estimate revenues of 295.9M on average, slightly below Company's guidance, and EPS of $ 0.24.

The strategic importance of the Switch and Data merger deserves spending a good part of this article reviewing, once more, the reasons behind the acquisition and its potential impact on Equinix numbers/synergies going forward.

Equinix's recent “Update Call on Closure of Switch and Data Acquisition” comes handy to resume several information:

Steve Smith - Equinix Inc. - President, CEO

The strategic rationale for this acquisition centers around five key elements. Gaining a quick entry in new markets, securing additional capacity in our existing markets, enhancing our core focus on network density and interconnection services, and producing strong financial synergies to enhance the accretiveness of this transaction. Finally this transaction continues to distance Equinix from other data center providers, and further establishes us as the only global network neutral data center provider, and clearly with the largest North American footprint.

The comment about the additional capacity is interesting, as Equinix, with this acquisition, has basically doubled the number of cabinets available for sale in the North American market.

We believe that the impact of this new inventory will start producing positive effect mostly in the second half of 2010:

Steve Smith - Equinix Inc. - President, CEO

Secondly, we will drive top-line growth with a strong focus on achieving revenue synergies across both sales organizations. An early sign of success over the past week is that we have already identified several Equinix customers that are interested in the Switch & Data inventory, and we have also started to receive inbound lead opportunities to cross-sell Switch & Data customers into Equinix's global footprint.

In our opinion, the New York metro area will strongly benefit from the combination of the Switch and Data inventory and the great success that Equinix is achieving within the financial vertical (comment added in Italic):

Steve Smith - Equinix Inc. - President, CEO

In the New York metro area, we have now acquired three data centers in New York City, two of which are located within key telecom landing points. Additionally, the capacity gain from their sizable new data center in Bergen County, will supplement our existing footprint in New Jersey, which we expect to be important in meeting the demand from our financial services customer base.

Given our historical fill rates in this metro, we are very excited by the additional capacity in both New Jersey locations (the former Switch and Data Bergen facility and the new Equinix NY4 third phase expansion).

Equinix has recently been in the news for several wins within the financial community, like Deutsche Börse Systems, selecting Equinix as strategic data center provider in Frankfurt, Germany and the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), operator of the Australian futures market, deploying its new hosting solution within the Equinix Chicago (CH1) data center. Several networks have also announced connections to different Equinix's data centers worldwide, targeting the low latency needs of financial institutions. As a reminder, Equinix is the only colo provider with a presence at all major exchange markets worldwide.

Focusing on the New York market, Direct Edge has just converted its trading platforms to formal Exchanges, and is now operating from the Equinix NY4 data center, a move which could represent an important catalyst for the financial community.

These comments are taken from Securities Technology Monitor:

In 2,500 square feet of space, you can house a typical Radio Shack store, with hundreds of electronic products, ranging from smart phones to car security systems to MP3 players to weather radios to cables and batteries.

Or, in roughly the same amount of space, you can house a stock exchange. Or two.

Such is the case with EDGA and EDGX, the two newly approved stock exchanges owned by Direct Edge, which formally debut Wednesday in Secaucus, N.J. As competition in securities trading venues goes up, so does the drive for speed and “scalability,’’ the ability to expand rapidly and reliably.

…

Unlike the New York Stock Exchange, you won’t see a monster-sized flag draped over where Direct Edge operates the new trading platforms that will power EDGA and EDGX. The two exchanges sit side by side, in a black wire cage inside a nondescript industrial building that could just as easily hide a distribution warehouse.

Spare servers in this cage provide immediate backup, in case of failure. A second cage with copies of the entire EDGA and EDGX trading exchanges sits in another nondescript building in North New Jersey, just in case.
...

From the get-go, the new system will be able to handle 220,000 messages every second, while keeping up the pace of acknowledging each order in less than half a million. Each of the two exchanges can handle 2.5 billion transactions a day. “That is four times the capacity of even the days surrounding the Flash Crash,’’ said O’Brien. “So there is significant head room there.”
...

“There is no theoretical limit” to the amount of transactions Direct Edge will be able to handle each day, Bonanno said, at these speeds.

More information about the Direct Edge Exchange come from wallstreetandtech.com:

Direct Edge Chief Executive William O'Brien said the company is not about to venture into unfamiliar territory with its exchange status, which means tighter regulatory oversight.

But he said a new data center launched during the conversion opens a new battle front with competitors in selling trading data to increasingly hungry investors.

"That's something we view as a way to broaden our competitive footprint," O'Brien said in an interview. "As great as this company has progressed so far, I still feel like it is still getting started."

Just hours before ringing the exchanges' opening bell in Jersey City Wednesday, O'Brien told Reuters Insider that Direct Edge "could potentially" list its shares in an initial public offering. The IPO plan was originally set for this year.

From an interconnection stand point, Equinix has increased the number of networks and ISPs connected to its data centers from 410 to 575. Switch and Data's success in network density was unparalleled in the industry, and approximately 31% of revenues were represented by interconnection services, or more than double Equinix numbers. Switch and Data Palo Alto and Equinix Ashburn represent the two most important peering points on the West and East Coast of the USA, and both Company’s regional data centers will benefit from the wider offer of ISPs and networks that they will now be able to offer to their existing customers base.

From a financial point of view, Equinix will take advantage of Switch and Data'S NOLs, and expects to generate about $20 million of synergy savings within one year, which is quite a substantial amount, if we consider that it does represent about 10% of Switch and Data cash costs.

Equinix is also estimating acquisition costs of about $23 million for professional and legal fees, that will be split between 2009 and 2010. Integration costs will also be substantial:

Keith Taylor - Equinix Inc. - CFO

For each of the quarters through the integration period, we will provide you an estimate of what we believe the integration costs to be, and compare those costs against the savings attributed to our synergies. For 2010 we expect the integration costs to be $2 million greater that the cost savings relating to the synergies. But as we looked at the entire integration period, as Steve mentioned, we expect to receive a minimum of $20 million in annual cost savings from this transaction, half of those annualized savings should be realized by the end of the year. The restructuring costs associated with this deal will primarily be incurred over the next three or four quarters, and will be expensed to the income statement on a separate income statement line. The restructuring costs will not affect our adjusted EBITDA metric.

As some key operating metrics were used in slightly different ways by the two Companies, Equinix provided a reconciliation sheet on its web side for Switch and Data's recent quarter.

As far as revenues, Equinix hasn't really included any synergy in its forecast:

David Barden - BofA Merrill Lynch - Analyst

But no revenue synergies in the guidance at all?

Keith Taylor - Equinix Inc. - CFO

At this stage we haven't.

Clearly there is some expectation, again, as Steve alluded to, that we are already starting selling into their assets, and I understand from our sales team we are getting leads from the Switch and Data team into our (global) assets. So I think that there is going to be a strong opportunity for us. I think it will create some synergies, but we have not made that assumption today.

The combined business would be already in a position to generate about 1.8 billion of revenues, excluding further expansions that the now combined Company might need to take into consideration quickly:

Mark Adams - Equinix Inc. - Chief Development Officer

Yes, they actually, they do have a couple of projects that they have had under review, and we need to make decisions pretty much in the next 30 to 60 days, but given the commonality of the businesses and the markets we are focused on, they are projects we are very interested in, and we would like to pull right into our portfolio. So we see some good opportunities for expansion.

Uncaged: Direct Edge Bares its Exchanges

from Securities Technology Monitor:

>>In 2,500 square feet of space, you can house a typical Radio Shack store, with hundreds of electronic products, ranging from smart phones to car security systems to MP3 players to weather radios to cables and batteries.

Or, in roughly the same amount of space, you can house a stock exchange. Or two.

...

The economic benefits (see “Benefits, and Costs, in the Life of an Exchange”) and the prestige may be big factors. And the transformation of its alternative venues into full-fledged exchanges and the technology transformation that has gone with it may just be the price of keeping up with rivals.

...

Inside the cage are 80 racks of Hewlett-Packard ProLiant servers and related memory storage units. Anywhere from two to 14 servers sit in each rack. About 200 servers, per exchange. By H-P’s estimate, this generation of “convergent” servers -- which include processing capacity, mem ory storage, networking features and energy efficiency – puts the same amount of computing power in a single box as was found in 21 boxes four years ago.

Spare servers in this cage provide immediate backup, in case of failure. A second cage with copies of the entire EDGA and EDGX trading exchanges sits in another nondescript building in North New Jersey, just in case.

Lexus HS 250h – an Easy to Like Hybrid

from Canadafreepress.com:

>>Lexus HS 250h – an Easy to Like Hybrid

...

One thing that was pretty cool about the interior of my test HS was the Remote Touch feature, which comes with the optional navigation system. It’s a mouse-like cursor control thingy mounted on the center console, nicely at hand. It features a kind of force-feedback “detent” that lets you know by feel when you’ve moved the cursor over something clickable, which can help you keep your eyes on the road.

This Remote Touch is a lovely alternative to those knob-like cursor control thingies that are rearing their ugly heads in more and more cars these days and I hope it catches on. It may take up more real estate on the console than a knobby thing, and they need to work on the clunky on-screen interface, but I like it anyway.

Direct Edge's Trading Platforms Convert to Exchanges

from wallstreetandtech.com:

>>Direct Edge's Trading Platforms Convert to Exchanges

* EDGX, EDGA trading platforms convert to formal exchanges

* Direct Edge gains equal footing with NYSE, Nasdaq

* New exchanges' opening bell in Jersey City, New Jersey

---

The conversion brings new stock symbols to trading screens across the country and puts Direct Edge on equal footing with NYSE Euronext, Nasdaq OMX Group Inc and BATS Global Markets -- rivals it has aggressively and successfully taken on in the hyper competitive market for order flow.

Direct Edge Chief Executive William O'Brien said the company is not about to venture into unfamiliar territory with its exchange status, which means tighter regulatory oversight.

But he said a new data center launched during the conversion opens a new battle front with competitors in selling trading data to increasingly hungry investors.

>>Direct Edge opens new front in battle for US market share

Direct Edge has opened a new front in the battle for US exchange market share by converting its two alternative trading systems into formal exchanges and completing the migration to a new technology platform.

Effective Wednesday, the EDGA and EDGX Exchanges are now trading all Tape A, B, and C symbols out of a new data centre at Equinix's NY4 facility in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Direct Edge Says IPO Possible as Its Markets Become Exchanges

from businessweek.com:

>>Direct Edge Says IPO Possible as Its Markets Become Exchanges

...

The company’s market share for equities trading this month was 8 percent, down 1.8 percentage points from last month, according to a Macquarie report. Bats, which accounted for 11.2 percent so far this month, surpassed Direct Edge’s volume in May and June. Direct Edge’s share of trading outpaced Bats in the second half of last year.

The decrease in market share this month is “acceptable,” O’Brien said. “It’s because of the enormity of the transition,” he said. “What we did is something no stock exchange has done before -- completely migrating its technology to a new platform and moving into a new data center at the same time.” Direct Edge this month moved its systems to a data center in Secaucus, New Jersey operated by Equinix Inc.

“We’re excited by our ability, with the new platform and technology architecture, to deliver new products that are innovative,” O’Brien said. “That will help Direct Edge stand out.”

Fortunately, LINAC manufacturers have stepped up R&D efforts in spite of weak capex trends and have released a number of products recently that meet these criteria, including TrueBeam (VAR), TomoHD (TOMO) and CyberKnife VSI (ARAY ). We believe recent product innovations, reimbursement clarity, the elimination of most health care reform concerns and an overall healthier economic backdrop (relative to a year ago) support a more optimistic outlook for large-dollar capital equipment purchases for the foreseeable future,” the analysts say.

background:

Accuray Enters Licensing Agreement with CyberHeart Incorporated

Sunnyvale, California, April 30, 2007 – Accuray Incorporated (Nasdaq: ARAY), a global leader in the field of radiosurgery, announced today that it has entered into an agreement with CyberHeart Incorporated under which CyberHeart will use Accuray’s technology to develop a non-invasive method for performing cardiac ablation. Cardiac ablation is used to destroy a small portion of the heart that is causing abnormal rhythms. Ultimately, the developed technology may have applications in the treatment of atrial fibrillation, a disorder that prevents the heart from beating properly and can cause blood clots and strokes.

CyberHeart has received commitments for independent venture capital financing to fund technical and clinical research and development of a cardiac ablation system that incorporates Accuray’s technology. In the event CyberHeart is able to successfully develop and commercialize such a system, under Accuray’s agreement with CyberHeart, Accuray will be the sole supplier of radiosurgery equipment to CyberHeart and will also be entitled to receive specified payments based on usage of the CyberHeart system.

iTnews takes an exclusive look at SV1 and a sneak peek at the forthcoming US$145 million SV5 facility.

>>
“SV5 is a special design,” Equinix’s senior director of IBX operations in Silicon Valley Jerry Collier said.

The building itself will be constructed according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building specifications.

...

“SV1 is the hub of Silicon Valley,” Collier said.

The Equinix Exchange located in SV1 encompasses peering points that serve other Equinix centres in the Silicon Valley area – SV2, SV3 and SV4 – via a diverse fibre ring connecting the facilities.

SV1 has an average rack density of 1.75 kW. SV5 will support an average 4 kW per cabinet, according to Collier, although higher densities are possible, as long as customers are willing to pay for the space.

Interoute Press Release

Interoute provides financial institutions with ultra low latency direct connectivity into Equinix LD4 International Business Exchange data centre in London

Trading hub boosted by the arrival of algorithmic connectivity service

London, 6 July 2010 – Interoute, owner and operator of Europe’s largest next-generation network, has increased its UK footprint with direct connectivity to Equinix’s LD4 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centre located on the outskirts of London. Financial institutions can now utilise Interoute’s Fast Trade service to connect to both the major and emerging Multilateral Trading Facilities (MTFs) and trading venues located within the Equinix IBX data centre and other key financial exchanges throughout Europe.

As electronic trading grows, new MTFs have emerged to address the specialised needs of high frequency algorithmic trading. Equinix’s LD4 IBX network-neutral data centre has become a key UK location for these execution venues and is also home to a critical mass of buy and sell side firms, market data and technology providers. This diversity provides firms with maximum choice over which of their peers to partner with and also enables participants to quickly establish operational relationships with one another for the development of new opportunities, latency reduction and to decrease a firm’s time to market.

Financial institutions located in the Equinix LD4 IBX data centre now have the choice to use Interoute’s Fast Trade service to quickly connect to numerous exchanges across Europe with guaranteed low latency and stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Interoute’s growing pan-European network offers extensive levels of connectivity to the leading MTFs.

“We are already connected to 11 of Equinix’s IBX data centres in Europe, as well as many other key facilities. With our on-net presence in 100 cities, we are working to directly connect to as many leading and emerging exchanges as possible,” said Lee Myall, UK Regional Director at Interoute. “The increase of algorithmic trading across Europe has been huge and we are matching demand from financial institutions looking to trade across Europe competitively.”

Interoute is seeing increasing demand from financial firms for direct, high availability bandwidth into Equinix‘s LD4 IBX data centre. By connecting through Interoute’s Fast Trade, organisations are able to benefit from Interoute’s premium SLAs. The bandwidth allocated via the Fast Trade product is entirely dedicated to the customer’s use and thus maintains consistent low latency. Before it’s delivered, each Fast Trade route is tested for its exact round trip delay, to the nearest 100 microseconds, which is then guaranteed in the SLA for that specific service. Financial firms are provided a predictable high quality, ultra low latency service. Furthermore, should the service be unable to meet the SLA’s guaranteed round trip delay the customer is free to cancel the service without any additional charges.

For further information, please click here to view a video titled ‘Algorithmic trading with the fastest bandwidth speeds in Europe” featuring Interoute’s Director of Wholesale Products and Services, Jonathan Wright.

Canada's 3rd CK at Ottawa Hospital - starts treating patients in Sept

from the IV MB, by yyy60:

Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre - World-class cancer treatment

Once underserved, cancer patients in the Ottawa region now have considerably more access to the treatment, privacy and technology they need. This April, the Ottawa Hospital celebrated the second opening of two cancer centre expansions—the first, at the general campus, and the second, at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital (QCH).

....

‘Tough to beat’

With a state-of-the-art expansion comes state-of-the-art equipment, and the Ottawa Hospital is very excited about what they now have available.

“We just got a CyberKnife,” Doering says. “It’s equipment that does radiosurgery, which allows for non-invasive treatment of tumours. It’s like a radiation treatment but it is very focused treatment. For a brain tumour, a patient would normally go in and have the have skull cut open. The recovery would be two weeks in the hospital, in the intensive care unit. With this CyberKnife, the patient comes in for three days in a row and receives a 45-minute treatment. There is no anaesthesia, no operating room and no overnight stay in the hospital. It’s painless. And it’s so precise, that it spares the healthy tissue and only focuses on the cancer.”

“The CyberKnife is also great for lung cancer, because surgeons don’t have to worry about the lungs moving as the patient breathes,” she continues. “Typical radiation is not as precise with the lung movement and it can radiate some other tissue around it. But the CyberKnife moves with the respirations, it adjusts.”

This new machine came at no small cost—it was a $3.5-million capital investment. Fortunately, the Ottawa community came together and fundraised for the CyberKnife, showing its support for sick neighbours. We have fundraised for this and I must say the community has been great.

Right now, the hospital is building the bunker for it at the general campus. “We hope to treat our first patient with the CyberKnife during the week of September 20,” says Doering. “We’re really excited about that. It treats spine, kidney, lung, brain cancers and so on. Our folks right now are getting trained on the equipment.” Speaking of which, Ottawa has the only trained neurosurgeon in Ontario for this type of equipment. “I believe when you look at the Ottawa Hospital cancer program, you will see we have the best facilities in the country, if not the world. When you factor in our equipment, facilities and specialists, we are tough to beat.”

Fight to secure CyberKnife device

from APN News & Media:

“The cancer journey is a bizarre one,” he said. Mr Mackinnon said he wanted to use the book to bring the CyberKnife device to Australia – but after years of banging his head against the Government's brick wall he was going for a more direct method.

If he could sell enough copies, he wanted to use the money raised by the book to buy a CyberKnife device and donate it to a hospital.

“As the Government refuses to act, it is left to the general public, again, to assist those in need,” he said.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has emerged as a treatment option for local tumor control of primary and secondary malignancies of the liver. We report on our updated experience with SBRT in patients with non-resectable tumors of the liver.

METHODS: Our first 17 consecutive patients (mean age 58.1 years) receiving SBRT for HCC (n=6), IHC (n=3), and LM (n=8) are presented. Mean radiation dose was 34Gy delivered over 1–3 fractions.

RESULTS: Treated patients had a mean decrease in maximum pretreatment tumor diameter from 6.9±4.6 cm to 5.0±2.1 cm at three months after treatment (P<.05). The mean total tumor volume reduction was 44% at six months (P<.05). 82% of all patients (14/17) achieved local control with a median follow-up of 8 months. 100% of patients with HCC (n=6) achieved local control. Patients with surgically placed fiducial markers had no complications related to marker placement.

CONCLUSION: Our preliminary results showed that SBRT is a safe and effective local treatment modality in selected patients with liver malignancies with minimal adverse events. Further studies are needed to define its role in the management of these malignancies.

Data Centers Continue to Grow in a Weak Economy

from Seeking Alpha, by David Gross:

>>Few industries have withstood the recession as well as data centers. Lease rates are still rising, capacity is being filled up, and new centers are opening every week. The industry's great recession was not in 2008 or 2009, but in 2002, when it was decimated by dot com overbuilding, and some facilities were turned back into warehouses.

This year the boom is back

from The Business Times Singapore:

>>Equinix to expand data centres in Asia

Nasdaq-listed Equinix will also use the funds - procured as loan from various banks, including DBS Bank - to expand in Hong Kong, Sydney, and Tokyo, apart from Singapore, Equinix's Hong Kong-based Asia-Pacific president, Samuel Lee, told BizIT in an interview.

..

'We continued to experience strong growth within the Asia-Pacific region even during the global recession in 2009, and more so this year,' Mr Lee says. 'In fact, last year we opened a second DC in both Singapore and Sydney, and expanded our Hong Kong DC as well. This year the boom is back and we should see a strong surge in enterprise data. Much of that data would need to sit in DCs.'

In 2008, Singapore had a total of about 170,000 sq m of DC capacity, up 15 per cent over 2007. Not much capacity was added in 2009 due to the recession in 2008. But in 2010, demand may outstrip supply by up to 20 per cent, according to industry sources. Apart from Equinix, there are a slew of DC players such as SingTel, NCS, Tata Communications, ST Engineering and Fujitsu Asia.

..

According to industry analysts, the demand for DC space significantly outpaces supply in the Asia-Pacific, including Japan (APJ) region, with 50 per cent of the demand being driven by government initiatives, and the rest by Internet media, telecom and IT companies.

'Demand for DC hosting currently exceeds supply,' research house Frost & Sullivan's analyst Wu Chengyu says. 'In fact, over 80 per cent of the major DCs in the Asia-Pacific are running at close to 90 per cent capacity, and space is at a premium.'

In 2009, the market for DC services in the APJ region was about US$8 billion. That's set to cross US$10.6 billion by 2011.

New Challenges in Handheld Touchscreens

from Advanced Imaging Magazine:

By Dr. Andrew Hsu

The wide adoption of capacitive touchscreens has brought new considerations and challenges to designers. Interaction with handheld devices via gestures is gaining more attention.

...

To enhance the level of physical feedback, designers can also incorporate haptics (touch feedback), also known as “rumble feedback,” “tactile feedback,” and “vibrotactile feedback.” Haptics solutions enhance user feedback to touch input by associating a tactile effect, achieved through an actuator such as a motor, to a particular touch or gesture. Today there are improved haptics solutions, such as Immersion’s TouchSense® technology, that provides a wide library of haptic effects, making it easy for designers to integrate. Imagine subtle exertion when you touch a button icon or scrolling with wheel-like rotation effects can make an interface both compelling and easy to use.

Software design around capacitive touchscreens is more art than science and simplicity is the name of the game. Since touchscreens are complex control systems, the challenge is how to make device interaction intuitive and obvious with clean and elegant design.

...

Andrew Hsu has been the primary technical contact for Synaptics’ worldwide customers in the handheld space since 1999. He joined Synaptics in 1996 and led the company’s efforts into establishing a presence in the mobile handset market. Hsu developed Synaptics’ ClearPad™ technology, a transparent sensor that can be mounted under curved plastic and glass. He led the marketing for ClearPad, resulting in the first production phone with a capacitive touchscreen, the LG Prada. Prior to his current role, Hsu was a scientist and a design engineer that helped develop the first single-chip TouchPad™ solution for Synaptics. Hsu holds a doctorate in neuroscience and a master’s in computer and information science from the University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Cal Tech.

fatter and faster

In the low-tech world, fatter and faster reads like an oxymoron. However, Equinix's chief technologist, Lane Patterson, is appearing on a panel at GigaOM Structure 2010 Conference on Thursday, June 24 (11:20am) in San Francisco to help explain what this means to the cloud computing revolution. In order to reach its full potential, cloud computing is often dependent on one key factor: high-capacity broadband. As customers deploy the cloud they are finding they need ever-fatter pipes and lower latency than ever before. The panel investigates the perspectives from the broadband service providers and broadband technology providers. (See events for additional information)

>>On the edge of medical technology -- St. Ann's first in area with 'revolutionary' cancer treatment

Cancer surgery without the surgery is coming soon to Mount Carmel St. Ann's.

CyberKnife, a $6.3 million robotic radiosurgery system, has been in use at the hospital since Monday, June 21. The system is one of only two in the state and the first in Central Ohio.

"In my (opinion), it meets the qualifications of revolutionary," said Doug Widman, medical director of Columbus CyberKnife and radiation oncologist at Mount Carmel.

...

CyberKnife, which is made in Germany and described by Widman as looking like a robot used in automotive manufacturing, also has tighter treatment margins.

...

Widman said St. Ann's expects to treat 200 patients in the first year of the machine, and most insurance carriers cover the treatment. Because of the high cost of the procedure, all patients most be preapproved.

CK in Japan – expected to grow from 20 to 100 in 5 years??

from the IV MB, by yyy60:

>>CK in Japan – expected to grow from 20 to 100 in 5 years??

Japanese love robot and CK is one of their favorites. But they also have strict rules for CK. Although FDA approved CK for treatment of tumors in any location of the body in 2001, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare did not grant the approval until June 2008. Twenty CK (for head and neck) were installed in Japan at that time. There was a very high expectation for future sales after the approval. An old news from July 24, 2008 said: “CyberKnife units are expected to grow to about 100 over five years”.

At the end of 2008, CK in Japan increased to 21. No more were installed in 2009 and first half of 2010. Why sales stalled? Is “100 over five years” over expectation?

News on June 3, 2010 “First CK Treatments Using the Synchrony Respiratory Tracking System Completed in Japan” http://www.asianetnews.net/view-release?pr-id=39715
may answer some of the questions.

It said: “ In April 2010 fiducial markers that are compatible with the CyberKnife System were approved for use.”

June 2008 – Approved treatment in any location of the body
April 2010 – Approved fiducial markers

I think it is just a slow start, “100 in 5 years” is still a possibility, may be delayed a couple of years because of the recession. ARAY have received 3 new orders in the last two quarters. I hope the approval of fiducial markers has removed the last hurdle.
