Researchers suggest haptics and audio for discreet password input
>>Researchers Andrea Bianchi, Ian Oakley and Dong-Soo Kwon have some ideas for overcoming that little problem though, and recently put together a video demonstrating a few of the possibilities they've come up with. All of those rely on haptic input systems -- either on their own or in conjunction with some audio output (through headphones for privacy).

Electronics Innovation Will Protect Motorists - and Save Lives
>>One company on the cutting edge of improving motorist safety is Visteon Corporation, an innovative auto supplier based near Detroit. I had the privilege of visiting Visteon last Friday, where I was thrilled to see the company’s incredible innovations in haptics, design, dashboards, and climate systems that improve functionality and utility and promise to transform the driving experience. This $8 billion, Fortune 500 company (NYSE: VC) is providing cutting-edge safety, design and entertainment options for major carmakers.

Controller Support: An Android Advantage
>>Although many casual Android/iOS games do just fine with touch, some are certainly better suited for some sort of a controller. While controller support in Android in its infancy at best, it's more than iOS currently offers. I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen. As smartphones and tablets come close to equalling the performance of current game consoles, I feel like the controller problem must be addressed.
What It’ll Take For Tablets to Replace PCs
>>The first is haptic feedback, and it's not a new concept. We've seen crude versions in the past, mostly in the form of phones that respond to user inputs with slight vibrations. But that only scratches the surface of what could and should be done with technology that's been largely brushed aside as a parlor trick. Imagine, for instance, playing Angry Birds and actually feeling the tension in the slingshot, or drawing with a stylus in Paper and forgetting that you're not handling a real pen or marking up real paper. Haptic feedback could even recreate the sensation of typing on a physical keyboard, and as any writer will tell you, that's critical to a decent word-processing experience. In short, it could add another dimension to tablets, one that's necessary to suspend users' disbelief and convince them that their synthetic experiences are as real and rewarding as their real-life counterparts.

Brennan IT chooses Equinix as strategic data centre partner for Sydney and the United States
29 March, 2012, Sydney, Australia: As it continues to grow its cloud and managed services business, Brennan IT today announced that it has selected Equinix, a provider of global data centre services, as part of an ongoing expansion of its cloud infrastructure and services platform.
The relationship will see Brennan IT transition many of its NSW-based cloud services to Equinix’s Sydney data centre, while also providing Brennan IT with the opportunity to take advantage of Equinix’s global platform of state-of-the-art facilities, especially in the United States.
The move is aimed at increasing Brennan IT’s cloud capacity and capabilities – ensuring that the company can continue to deliver cost effective and flexible services to new and existing Infrastructure-as-a-Service customers. Brennan IT will maintain a permanent, private suite at Equinix’s Sydney site.
Brennan IT’s managing director Dave Stevens said that, with Brennan IT’s cloud investments doubling every nine months, the relationship with Equinix would form an important part of the company’s overall cloud strategy.
“As our cloud offerings and customer base continue to expand, so do our requirements,” Mr Stevens said. “By partnering with Equinix we are guaranteeing access to the capacities, quality facilities and services we need to cost-effectively expand as the popularity of our cloud services continues to rise.”
Demand for Brennan IT’s cloud and Infrastructure-as-a-Service platforms continues to be strong. For the FY 10/11, Brennan IT’s infrastructure revenue grew by 101 per cent and the company is on track to deliver similar levels of growth this FY. Mr Stevens added that Q2 2012 was the company’s strongest sales quarter on record, up 15 per cent on the previous best quarter.
“For this vital service we wanted an A-grade provider with first-class facilities with the highest uptimes, stability, redundancy and performance. As one of the largest facilities in Sydney, Equinix emerged as the obvious choice,” Mr Stevens said.
In addition to delivering cloud services from Equinix’s local facility, Mr Stevens explained that Brennan IT would also take advantage of Equinix’s status as a global provider to provision services internationally, initially in the United States but also potentially in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. “An increasing number of our Australian customers are expanding into global markets and our partnership with Equinix will allow us to support them in their ventures,” Mr Stevens said.
“Brennan IT is a fantastic example of a local service provider who understands how to drive growth in the competitive cloud market with the right service offering. Equinix’s global platform of International Business Exchanges provides an ideal launching pad for their domestic and international success. Brennan can not only take advantage of our unrivalled breadth and scope of data centre facilities around the world, but also leverage the full benefits our ecosystem has to offers,” said Tony Simonsen, managing director, Equinix Australia.

Gramercy Capital Corporation: An Edward De Bono Stock
>>Gramercy Capital Corporation (GKK) is an interesting stock that should offer investors a limited downside, due to its strong cash position, while potentially representing, on the upside, a kind of an "option" on the turnaround of commercial real estate property in the USA.Some lateral thinking, however, rather than a more classical investing approach, may be necessary/useful to understand why the company, in spite of its recent near-death experience, can belong to the "value investing" category, although some risks that could derail the happy ending still exist. Patience may also be required, as the story doesn't really seem close to get a catalyst.
There are several interesting articles about this stock on the Internet that we suggest you should read, including Plan Maestro's analysis, available also here on Seeking Alpha (I, II), as well as a recent post by Laminar Capital Management - we'll try to add to this commentary our view and an update to the most recent Q4 2011 results.

Nirvanix Offers Direct Connections to Cloud Storage within Equinix Data Centers Worldwide
Direct Connections Provide Customers with Improved Throughput, Performance and Cost Savings
SAN DIEGO, March 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Nirvanix, the leader in enterprise-class cloud storage services, today announced the availability of direct connections to its Cloud Storage Network™ in Equinix (Nasdaq: EQIX - News) International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers. By offering this direct connection to Nirvanix offerings, new and existing Equinix customers are able to establish a private network connection between their owned or managed IT infrastructure and the Nirvanix Cloud Storage Network in the same data center—providing immediate access to the Nirvanix Cloud File System™, designed to support millions of users, billions of objects and exabytes of data. The service is currently available in Equinix data centers in New Jersey; Frankfurt, Germany; and Tokyo, Japan and enables customers to bypass Internet service providers to improve throughput, gain consistent network performance, reduce costs and add cloud storage capabilities to their existing IT foundation.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090113/LA58239LOGO)
"Making cloud storage a virtual extension of an organization's IT infrastructure is quickly replacing conventional approaches for applications such as backup and archival," said Scott Genereux, President and CEO of Nirvanix. "By offering direct connections to our Cloud Storage Network, Equinix customers running a cloud computing environment or a SAN storage infrastructure can now establish an immediate and direct connection into our public cloud for on-demand storage capacity, availability and bandwidth. This provides them with continuous data access achieved by multiple live replicas spread across a global grid, enabling work-flow sharing and content collaboration across multiple diverse locations while maintaining data consistency."
"Given the degree of variability and uncertainty around bandwidth, speed and latency that comes with relying on the public internet for core application connectivity, many customers are looking to connect their IT infrastructure directly to their cloud service providers, a solution that improves performance and security, reduces cost and enables new business capabilities," said Chris Sharp, General Manager, Cloud and Content for Equinix. "This partnership provides customers with a high bandwidth and low latency connection to Nirvanix's leading enterprise-class cloud storage services and is a welcome addition to the Platform Equinix ecosystem of more than 300 cloud service providers and the destination of more than 4,000 companies."
For Equinix customers, this service provides new business-enabling capabilities, including:
- High volume data transfer: high bandwidth connectivity enables customers to more efficiently, cost-effectively and securely upload or download large amounts of data from the Nirvanix Cloud Storage Network.
- Enhanced performance: high bandwidth, low latency connectivity enables customers to treat Nirvanix cloud storage as part of the data center for more frequent migration/replication of data, allowing for more homogeneous business continuity/disaster recovery policies, and retention strategies.
- Hybrid cloud storage: With a Nirvanix Hybrid Cloud Storage node deployed within an Equinix data center and a direct connection, customers can maintain cloud storage capacity on premises for frequently accessed data plus have the ability to access the public cloud for on-demand capacity and bandwidth, supporting cloudbursting during peak business hours.
- Concurrent access to public and private resources: Nirvanix direct connections can be partitioned into multiple logical connections, enabling customers to use the same connection to access public and private resources.

Apple's haptic touch feedback concept uses actuators, senses force on iPhone, iPad
>>In an effort to make touchscreens less static, Apple has proposed that future iPhones and iPads could feature actuators that would provide haptic feedback to users, and also include sensors that would measure the force at which a user touches the screen.
Apple’s New Touchscreen Unlike Anything You’ve Ever Seen
>>Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) touchscreens could soon come with the ability to let users feel the controls on the screen. The company has filed a patent application with the Patent and Trademark Office for a haptic technology that would provide feedback to the user and include sensors that measure the force at which a user touches the screen, an AppleInsider report said.
The application, titled “Touch-Based User Interface with Haptic Feedback,” says the use of piezoelectric actuators would allow the user to feel a virtual button on the fingertip. In addition, if the device can measure how much force a user is applying to the screen, it could respond with differing reactions.

Mobile Device Input: 2 Intriguing New Technologies
>>But these demonstrations--from the cowbell, to shaking maracas, to circling the rim of a wine glass--were really there to showcase the capabilities of Immersion's technology. The idea is that device manufacturers will license the technology--Immersion counts LG, Nokia and Samsung among its licensees, and Pantech is actually using HD haptics now--and developers will use it in applications.
Outside of the fun little tricks, Immersion showed some practical examples. For instance, imagine scrolling through your Facebook photos that people have commented on and finding, via "feel," the ones that have received the highest number of comments. It actually felt heavier in those spots. The same can be done with email. Immersion showed how you can configure e-mail so that your boss' e-mail gives you a bit of a taser-like buzz when you're scrolling through your inbox. Immersion calls this "ambient awareness" and is attempting to create ways to communicate clues in the background. Their theory is that developers will be able to simplify user interfaces so that not as much information clutters up the app screen.

Carrier Ethernet News checked in last week with Jim Poole, Equinix general manager of Global Networks and Mobility, to discuss those opportunities.
“Many cloud companies went to market with an over-the-top delivery model over the Internet,” noted Poole. But, he added, “the reality of the corporate market is that it sits on a private, wide-area network—and increasingly that network is Ethernet-based.”

Legacy infrastructure will fail to meet regulatory compliance objectives, say over 70% of Banking & Insurance professionals
>>INTERXION HOLDING NV (NYSE: INXN), a leading European provider of carrier-neutral colocation data centre services, today announced the results of an independent study and whitepaper by financial industry think-tank, JWG. The research is focused on the impact of anticipated regulation of the financial services industry on the ICT infrastructure requirements of banking and insurance firms across Europe.
The research - based on interviews with select industry practitioners, a pan-European industry survey of IT decision makers within banking and insurance firms and a review of more than 4,000 pages of regulation stipulated by the G20 in the aftermath of the financial crisis. These include the implementation of new capital requirements, as defined by Basel III and Solvency II, and reforms such as MiFID II and the European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) that will significantly affect firms’ systems, controls, reporting and record keeping ability. These regulations require major upgrades starting in 2012 and rippling across industry sectors for the rest of the decade.
The study found that a massive 71% of respondents did not believe that legacy system upgrades required to meet compliance objectives would be complete by the required implementation date in 2015, while an overwhelming 90% stated that penalties for non-compliance by the end of this year will run into the tens of millions of dollars.

Anchor sets up new PoP in Los Angeles
>>Local web hosting outfit, Anchor, has “gone Hollywood” and set up a point of presence (PoP) in Los Angeles.
The PoP is aimed at providing Australian technology and e-retail companies with an affordable and high performance hosting service that will enable them to reach new customers in the U.S.
..
Los Angeles was chosen for the Equinix data centre that is located there, which is one of 98 data centres in 38 markets that the biggest data centre facility builder and supplier operates around the world
“Being based on the West Coast means we can have staff cover the other U.S. time zones relatively easily while still being close enough to Sydney that we can spend much of the workday in the office at the same time, which helps with managing our people,” Holloway said.

Apple's new iPad: 2 missing features
>>Haptic display
When it came to the iPad, the biggest talk over the past month was its haptic display. Haptic touch responds to you as you touch the display. Does your smartphone vibrate when you tap a key? Then you’ve already experienced haptic technology.
Virtually every device manufacturer has at least one haptic device under its belt except for Apple. Up until now and, obviously, the foreseeable future, Apple users will be limited to smooth touchscreens that provide no feedback.
The tech blog Pocket Lint believed Apple was working with the haptic technology company Senseg to update the new iPad. It didn’t help that Apple’s invite said “We have something for you to see. And touch.”
Without the haptic technology, it’s hard not to view the new iPad as a minor upgrade from last year’s model.
Why Apple’s New iPad Won’t Win Over the Xbox Gamer
>>But in an industry where touching is everything, touchscreens can't be the only thing. As subtle as it can be sometimes, haptic feedback is an integral component to most interactive experiences. The tiny click you hear when you push a button. The vibration of your controller. The slight resistance as you pull your triggers to a game's rhythm, shooting soldiers and aliens along with the pulse of your screen. To console gamers, Apple's tablet can't come close to mirroring that feeling, no matter how powerful its guts are.

Will iPad 3 offer a more immersive touch experience?
>>See me, feel me, touch me
The reference to “touch" is more problematic.
But it could well mean Apple has implemented new haptic technology in the iPad. Haptics is tactile feedback technology that lets users feel sensations like vibration and force feedback -- e.g. a kind of mini-shockwave feeling in a game controller, or a grainy or “heavy” feeling when certain onscreen objects are touched to differentiate them.
“It’s an intriguing idea that Apple could use haptics to offer more feedback in a user’s gestures,” says IHS iSuppli analyst Rhoda Alexander.

One day, all data centres will be made this way
>>A couple of weeks ago, I joined a number of journalists on a visit to two Equinix data centres in Paris (one complete, one under construction), on the invitation of one of their prime tenants, BSO Network Solutions. Now that the air conditioning noise has stopped ringing in my ears, what did I learn?

Data Center Related Stocks Are Beating The Market
>>The US market is off to a very good start in 2012, with the NASDAQ up 5.4% in February alone and nearly 14% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P 500 and the DOW gained 4.1% and 2.5% respectively, in February and 8.6% and 6% in the first two months.
In spite of such a strong benchmark, data center related stocks performed, on average, much better than the market, delivering mostly double-digit gains in February alone, and several outstanding results since the start of the year.

Immersion asserting its patent portfolio, says Craig-Hallum
>>Craig-Hallum said Immersion (IMMR) is aggressively asserting its IP with the recent ITC action and lawsuit against Motorola Mobility (MSI). The firm believes this is the right move and hope to see more defendants added to the complaint soon. The analyst believes Immersion's technology is very relevent and that the patent portfolio is significant, and that share could see substantial upside if it settles with Motorola. Shares are Buy rated with a $9 price target.
NEC Medias ES N-05D
>>It's arrived at the Medias ES N-05D, which measures in at a ridiculous 6.7mm, and making the Droid Razr choke on its salad in the process.
>>NEC MEDIAS ES N-05D is a Japan only handset with killer specs
>>Casio announced at the NEC is partnering "SiS Distribution (Thailand) PCL" of Thailand and a leading IT equipment sales, to start selling MEDIAS terminal series for the Thai market from April.
Tablets That Have a Certain Feel to Them
>>The two technologies are also at different stages. Senseg is just now looking to sign its first customers, while Immersion says its newer technology is already in a tablet from Pantech and will come soon to other tablets. Phones should also get the new touch tech, once the piezo modules are reduced a bit in size.

Avoid PIIGS Sovereign Bonds
>>We live interesting times, here in old Europe.

Immersion's haptic technology gets your smartphone buzzing
>>BARCELONA, Spain--I popped by Pepcom's MobileFocus event that was happening during Mobile World Congress and stumbled upon the Immersion booth. The company was showing off its new haptic technology that can be integrated into Android smartphones.
Shown a picture of a maracas (pictured above) on what looks to be a Nexus S, I was told to hold it up to my ear and shake the smartphone. Imagine my surprise when the phone vibrated exactly the way real maracas would, with matching sounds and just the right amount of vibration to simulate beans bouncing around inside the handset.

HD Integrator
The HD Integrator build-time OEM software tool harnesses the capabilities of Immersion’s TouchSense 5000 and high fidelity actuators to deliver new haptic interactions based on the dynamic content and UIs of next-gen handsets. The resulting experience uses thoughtfully designed and fast response HD haptic effects to: 1.) Communicate new and relevant information via haptics and 2.) Transform mobile UIs and content such as mobile games and video into multi-modal experiences that fully engage the senses.
HD Integrator is only available to OEMs using high fidelity actuators along with Immersion TouchSense 5000 software. The solution hinges upon the ability for the embedded haptic solution to deliver fast response times and effects across a broader frequency range, which is only available through high fidelity actuators.
Hands On With Immersion's HD Integrator
>>We listened to a clip of Jennifer Lopez's On the Floor with HD reverb effects enabled. While the song itself remains a matter of taste, there's no denying the additional punch haptic feedback has while listening, causing your phone to pulse along with the beat of the song. While you may not want to listen to music like this all the time, it's a good example of how these effects can be applied to sounds in videos or games.
Another demo introduced "layered haptics," which allows developers to deliver simultaneous distinguishable effects. A video of a rollercoaster ride, for instance, allows you to feel the movement of the coaster, the rush of the air, and even the passengers screaming from behind you. It's only a fifteen-second clip, but it's incredibly immersive. Check out a shot from the video in the slideshow above.
Hands-on with Immersion HD Integrator hi-fi haptics
>>Other demonstrations of the technology were more frivolous, but nonetheless impressive in their effect -- one app simulated a rubber or metal ball rolling around in a box, and we could actually feel the difference between the two types of balls based upon the feedback alone. After our short time using the sample apps, it seems like the potential for such tactile indicators to be used in new and creative ways is almost limitless. However, Immersion's only showing off what its platform can do, it'll be up to the OEMs to find new uses for the technology to maximize its potential.

Jamba Juice Expands Product Offering With Talbott Teas
>>Last week Jamba Juice (JMBA) announced the acquisition of Talbott Teas, a Chicago-based premium tea company, recently profiled on ABC-TV's Shark Tank.
Few details of the transaction are available at the moment, but the obvious ratio behind the acquisition seems to be the desire to complete Jamba Juice's product offering through the introduction of a premium tea category that is aligned with Jamba's focus to quality, 100% natural ingredients with no artificial flavors or preservatives. Given the fact that Jamba's major product (smoothies) has a strong summer consumption, the addition of an article with opposite seasonality may also be considered a positive.

Pantech Element review
>> It's not that we don't expect to see crapware like Enzo's Pinball, Bug Village and AT&T's bevy of apps (Code Scanner, Navigator, etc.) shoveled onto Android devices at this stage in the game, but we'd like to see the practice executed with a measure of restraint.
