Immersion in the News

“The VibeTonz feature is the coolest thing. Little vibrations based on touch screen selections or scrolling etc. It’s hard to describe so I’ll just say two words that have stuck with me… ‘touch sensation.’” (From GeekwithLaptop.com review of Samsung F700 phone.
(See review.).

“The touchscreen was not a chore to use. In many instances, it can be terribly difficult to press a simple button on the screen. Not so in this case. Scrolling up and down was fun and smooth; haptic feedback made it easy for me to know when I had pressed something; and it was easy to manuever around to various menus and pages within the device.” (From Unwired View review of Samsung AT&T Eternity phone. See review.).

“I have seen the future and it is the Remote Touch interface found in the all-new Lexus RX SUV . . . With the Remote Touch controller under your fingertips returning haptic feedback, your eyes don’t need to be glued to the screen all the time.” See article.

A recent article by APPLIANCE Magazine explains how haptic feedback systems can improve the usability of next generation touch controls by providing confirmation in response to user interactions -- in products ranging from kitchen appliances and office machines to fitness equipment and medical devices. See article.

Immersion is deeply engaged in accelerating the rate of growth for its Touch Interface Products business, where in addition to its touchscreen feedback and automotive products, its haptics technology is becoming increasingly relevant to an expanding number of vertical markets including Consumer Electronics, Office Automation, and Machine Controls. Growing uptake for the company’s solutions includes an expanded licensing agreement with Samsung for TouchSense® technology in digital audio devices (see press release), design wins with licensee SMK for machine and factory automation controls (see press release), and touch feedback in a touchscreen-based navigation system for a major U.S. car rental company.

TouchSense Technology Powering New Driver Control in 2010 Lexus RX

A 2D haptic device with Immersion technology developed by Alps Electric was integrated by Denso Corporation into the 2010 Toyota Lexus RX. Toyota, the world’s largest auto manufacturer, is using the device to elevate the automotive user experience, especially safety. The Remote Touch haptic control tips and tilts in all directions, moving a cursor on a screen above. When the cursor moves over different icons, like buttons, the driver feels haptic feedback. The system gives Lexus designers more flexibility in positioning the navigation/audio display, such as very near to the driver’s peripheral view of the road – a clear safety advantage. discussion by a radiation oncologist in Yahoo Message Board

from the IV MB:

>>I am a radiation oncologist
and when my hospital purchased a CyberKnife a few years ago I got to know quite well Accuray's marketing, sales, legal, and technical training teams. Training for 3 days at the Sunnyvale corporate HQ also gave me a chance to meet ARAY's physicists and engineers, and I was impressed at all levels with the competence of ARAY employees and their belief in and enthusiasm for their product (dealing with vendors and drug reps constantly gives one a good sense for BS). During clinical training I met fellow MDs, at least some of whom had no financial stake in ARAY, who were impressed and excited by this new technology (while being honest about some limitations of it.)

Internap Network expands its Somerville footprint

from the Boston Buisness Journal

>> Businesses may be cutting back on technology spending, but one company is making a $45 million bet that server space will avoid the chopping block.

Internap Network Services Corp. (Nasdaq: INAP), an Atlanta-based provider of Internet and technology services, is finishing the construction of a 45,000-square-foot collocation facility in Somerville.

The new operation sits across the street from Internap’s existing 70,000-square-foot facility in Somerville. Collocation facilities — unlike data centers, which tend to cater to a single tenant — are leased to multiple companies to house data center infrastructure.

The first phase of the facility, about 16,000 square feet, will open at the end of the month. It is about 30 percent preleased, according to company officials.

IMMR has brand new haptics technology for flexible displays

from the IV MB, by cellodude:

>>IMMR has brand new haptics technology for flexible displays
Huh? Memory metal? Flexible actuators, power supplies, even controller chips?

Just proves that IMMR stays ahead of the curve regarding new technologies. I've read of several companies doing research on flexible displays; Xerox is mentioned specifically in this patent app.

[United States Patent Application 20080303782

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR HAPTIC ENABLED FLEXIBLE TOUCH SENSITIVE SURFACE

Assignee Name: IMMERSION CORPORATION

[0027]An example of rollable display, which can be employed in the present invention, is a Gyricon.TM. sheet, which is a type of electronic paper developed at the Xerox PARC.TM. (Palo Alto Research Center). The Gyricon.TM. sheet has similar physical properties as a traditional sheet of paper except that it can be rewritten many times. The Gyricon.TM. technology is essentially a technique of manipulating millions of small toner particles in a thin layer of transparent plastic wherein the toner particles are arranged in response to an application of voltage patterns. The image displayed by the Gyricon.TM. sheet will be maintained until new voltage patterns are applied. It should be noted that other flexible display technologies for manufacturing rollable displays may be available, such as organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and/or organic/polymer TFT (Thin Film Transistor), which may be used to manufacture flexible displays.

In addition to traditionally mechanical based actuators, the present invention also employs a flexible actuator or flexible actuators. A flexible actuator may be a fiber (or nanotube) of electroactive polymers ("EAP"), a strip of piezoelectric element, and/or a fiber of shape memory alloy ("SMA"). For example, EAP, also known as biological muscles or artificial muscles, is capable of changing its shape in response to an application of voltage. The physical shape of an EAP may be deformed when it sustains large force. EAP may include Electrostrictive Polymers, Dielectric elastomers, Conducting Polyers, Ionic Polymer Metal Composites, Responsive Gels, Bucky gel actuator or any combination of the above-mentioned EAP materials.

[0033]Piezoelectric elements are another type of flexible actuators that can be used in the present invention. Piezoelectric element may be manufactured in a fiber-like device, a strip-like device or a film-like layer. The dimension of piezoelectric element can be expanded or shrunk depending on the applied voltage.

[0034]SMA, also known as memory metal, is another type of a flexible actuator wherein SMA could be made of copper-zinc-aluminum, copper-aluminum-nickel, nickel-titanium alloys, or a combination of copper-zinc-aluminum, copper-aluminum-nickel, and/or nickel-titanium alloys. Upon deforming from SMA's original shape, it regains its original shape in accordance with an ambient temperature and/or surrounding environment. It should be noted that the present invention may combine the EAP, piezoelectric elements, and/or SMA to achieve a specific haptic sensation.

[0035]Device 100 further includes a flexible battery 104 and a flexible chip 106. Because flexible battery 104 can be manufactured in an ultra-thin structure, it should have similar physical flexibility as the rollable display thereby they can be rolling up and/or unrolling without difficulty. Alternatively, instead of using flexible battery 104, device 100 includes a power supply, which is capable of generating sufficient power for device 100 to operate. In one embodiment, the power supply includes an array of solar cells or photovoltaic cells, wherein solar cells, for example, are capable of converting light energy into electrical energy. Flexible chip 106, also known as flexible electronics and/or flexible circuitry, may be used in device 100, and it can be rolled up like a window shade, a tube, or a scroll. While flexible chip 106 provides data processing capability for electronic interactive device 100, flexible battery supplies the power to device 100.]

The 3M MCT System combines a 3M MicroTouch ClearTek II capacitive touch sensor and an enhanced 3M MicroTouch EX II controller with tactile-feedback technology licensed from Immersion Corporation. The 3M MCT System creates on-screen tactile feedback for game players by calculating the touch coordinates, which are passed to the gaming application on the CPU and then to the TouchSense Effects Library. The assigned tactile effect is passed back through the EX II controller to activate multiple actuators mounted to the touch screen to create the specified tactile sensation that the player "feels." The elapsed time from the initiated touch to receipt of tactile response is virtually undetectable by users.

DATA CENTRE FINANCE FORUM GIVES POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR 2009

  • Submitted by: BroadGroup
  • Monday, 08 December 2008

“What the forum revealed, is a sustained business model for data centres that can ride out the recession.

London 8 December 2008 - The annual finance forum for investors in and owners of data centres which met in London has returned a largely positive outlook for the sector in 2009. Despite the economic climate, the operating fundamentals of data centres are sound and investors like the simplicity of recurring cash flows and the stability of operating results, particularly for colocation.

Speakers at the 2nd international Finance and Investment Forum for Data Centres who met in London last week assessed the current development and future outlook for data centres in the year ahead. Many viewed data centres as a predictable model because of the recurring revenue streams and mission critical activity. Fundamental drivers for the data economy were also believed to be still in place including the growth of online in retail and the propensity to outsource by enterprises.

Although the current economic downturn has resulted in difficulties in debt funding, it means less competitors and opportunities for data centre operators with healthy cashflows to expand in geographical locations where demand is growing. The data centre is ‘right-sized’ for a more straightened economic environment, and so much better placed to survive and thrive than many other industry sectors. Data centre operators who have strong relationships with power utilities are in also in a good position.

Conversely this is not a market for new entrants. Guy Willner, the former chief executive of Equinix Europe, warned that Data Centres are “no longer a start up game” because of the high investment that is required to be made in power before even starting to build a data centre. Data Centres ARE not a speculative play.

The forum also noted that many speculative deals have been put back or are on hold. The dynamic for consolidation would occur during 2009. Investment is still needed however as many data centres in Europe were built in the early 1990s and there remains a supply/demand imbalance.

“What the forum revealed, is a sustained business model for data centres that can ride out the recession. Internet demand is not in decline, nor is the need to support online retail activity. Enterprises facing drastic cost restrictions also see outsourcing to third parties as a panacea for their IT management. As such data centres remain well placed to survive and grow. By 2010-11 many will represent significant investment opportunities,” commented Steve Wallage, managing director of BroadGroup Consulting.

Internationally, the US data centre market is ARGUABLY 1-2 years ahead of Europe, which is in mid-cycle of its development. Asian markets which are more disparate are in the more early stages of growth, but are worth monitoring in the mid-term, as is the Middle East and parts of Africa and Latin America.

The forum saw the need for more coordination (for policy driven risk management and regulatory compliance) between people who have a stake in an organisation. Everyone is at periscope depth and each only seeing a small piece of what’s required. Sol Squire emphasised the need for corporates to have proper data archival policies. He perceived too much data being stored on email creating unnecessary “digital toxic waste.”

More generally few businesses truly recognise that between 40 and 60% of the operating cost of a data centre is power, and many IT decisions are still made with no regard for the impact on the data centre.

uWink Announces Odd-Lot Tender Offer

LOS ANGELES, BUSINESS WIRE --

uWink, Inc. (OTCBB: UWKI) announced today that it will commence anodd lo tender offer to purchase all shares of its common stock held by persons owning 99 shares or fewer on the close of business as of December 1, 2008. The Company will pay $0.50 for each share properly tendered, plus an additional $20 to each stockholder who properly tenders uWink shares as a reimbursement of its estimated annual servicing costs (transfer agent, proxy statements, etc.) for each stockholder of record.

The purpose of the odd-lot tender offer is to reduce the number of uWink stockholders of record and reduce or eliminate future servicing fees and SEC reporting costs stated Nolan Bushnell, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. We estimate that odd-lot stockholders who own less than 100 shares represent over 66% of our record stockholder base but only approximately 0.04% of our total shares outstanding

If we are successful in reducing our total stockholders of record under 500, uWink plans to deregister its common stock with the Securities and Exchange Commission. As a result of these actions, we expect to save considerable costs related to SEC reporting requirements, costs associated with implementing and complying with the Sarbanes Oxley Act and stock registrar costs. We also expect to reduce the significant amount of management time devoted to these activities stated Mr. Bushnell.

In addition, if we are successful in deregistering, we intend to spin-off our Technology Licensing business, via a stock dividend, to our shareholders as a separate non-reporting company. We are still in the early stages of the development of each of our operating businesses and we believe that spinning off our Technology Licensing business, and eliminating the costs associated with being a reporting company for each of our operating businesses, will improve the prospects for raising growth capital, as well as allow each of our operating businesses to compete more effectively in its respective markets stated Mr. Bushnell.

Following deregistration, uWink common stock will no longer be eligible for quotation on the OTCBB; but may be quoted in the Pink Sheets Electronic Quotation System. However, the Company cannot predict whether or when this will occur or that an active trading market will exist for its common stock after deregistration. Moreover, the Company intends to effect the spin-off of its Technology Licensing business such that shareholders will receive restricted shares of the spin-off company so that no trading market will develop for the common stock of the spin-off company. The Company expects to provide (and intends that the spin-off company will provide) its stockholders with annual unaudited financial information following its deregistration from the SEC.

The tender offer is not conditioned on the receipt of any minimum number of shares tendered. The Company has reserved the right to withdraw the offer if it determines that it is inadvisable to proceed with the offer for any reason.

If after completion of the purchase offer there are fewer than 500 stockholders of record, uWink intends to deregister its common stock with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the spin-off to shareholders of its Technology Licensing business as a separate non-reporting company. If, after the completion of the tender offer, uWink has more than 500 stockholders, the Board of Directors may consider other options to reduce the number of stockholders.

Stockholders and investors are urged to read uWink's Schedule 13E-3 being filed today with the SEC in connection with this tender offer, which includes the Offer to Purchase for Cash. These materials contain important information including the various terms and conditions to the offer.

Investors may obtain copies of uWink's Schedule 13E-3 for free from the SEC at the SEC's website or from the Company. Questions or requests for documents also may be directed to Nancy Nino of the Company at (818) 909-6030 x 102, or in writing to uWink, Inc., 16106 Hart Street, Van Nuys, CA 91406.

This press release is for informational purposes only and is not an offer to buy or a solicitation of an offer to sell any shares of uWink's common stock. The offer is being made solely by the Offer to Purchase for Cash and the accompanying Authorization Card, each dated December 5, 2008, which are being mailed to stockholders. The tender offer will expire at 5:00 p.m., Eastern Time, on Thursday, January 15, 2009, unless otherwise extended or earlier terminated. Eligible stockholders who would like to accept the offer must tender all shares that they own. Partial tenders will not be accepted.

What benefits have you experienced from the pyratine 6?

from the Rosacea Forum:

>>Today only, December 4th, 1- 877- skinfo4, has Pyratin-6 lotion and cream and other skin items on sale for 15% off. I just ordered myself the lotion. I've used Dr. Amy Taub's site the past year to obtain this.

I've been using the lotion since about last March. It is the only moisterizer I have ever been able to use for any length of time without breaking out or irritation. I tried the cream a couple of times and it was a little too rich for my skin. Maybe I will try it again after Christmas since we are getting chilly here and my face is a little dryer. I use a pea size of the lotion on my damp face. I really am pleased. The lady that took the order asked where I had heard about it, which was on this web site. This is my 3rd order with them. I still have some in my second tube, but couldn't resist the sale!!

    uWink's Chances of Survival

a new analisys of uWink by Chris Fernandez on Seeking Alpha:

    >>It’s been a recurring theme with the large scale selling in the market but uWink (NASDAQ: UWKI.OB) in particular, as those that own these stocks panic and try to make sense of their investments.

We’re at that juncture where it’s time to once again check in on uWink and their latest quarterly earnings release (or rather the 10-Q), and what this means for our investment going forward.

Is CyberKnife Ready for Prime Time in Prostate Cancer?

    from the Wall Street Journal:

    >>Is CyberKnife Ready for Prime Time in Prostate Cancer?

This morning’s Washington Post tells the tale of prostate cancer and CyberKnife, a $4 million machine designed to deliver high-dose, targeted radiation to kill tumors. Some hospitals that initially used the machine for brain and spinal tumors difficult to treat any other way are now using it to treat prostate cancer, which can be well treated by more conventional methods.

“This is really pushing the envelope,” Anthony Zietman, president-elect of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) told the Post. “It might be as good and more convenient. It may be better and more convenient. But it could turn out to be a disaster. No one knows.”

    comments section:

Prostate Cancer is a hihgly curale treatment if ofund early Seed implantation, surgery and external beam radiaton are tries and true treatments with thousands of patients treated and long term results known. The cyberknife has no proven track record and patients should be extremely cautious about the enthusiatic claims made by the owners of these machines. For example we are just learning now about the detrimental effects long term on patients who have external beam radiation The Cyberknife may be worse

I am a PhD physicist who worked with radiation effects for more than two decades. When diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer over a year ago, I rejected most radiation treatments based on that experience. After investigating the CyberKnife, it was a “no brainer” for me. The objections that I uncovered all appeared motivated by either uninformed fear or economic motivation. Follow-up after CyberKnife treatment has confirmed the efficacy of my decision. Experts Debate CyberKnife for Prostate Cancer

    From the Washington Post:

    >>But Georgetown, along with Virginia Hospital Center and others around the country, is now aggressively marketing the $4 million machine, known as the CyberKnife, for early prostate cancer, one of the most common cancers. That trend has sparked an intense debate about whether it represents an important advancement or the latest example of an expensive and potentially profitable new technology proliferating too soon.

While its advocates say the CyberKnife offers prostate cancer patients a safe and effective -- and much more convenient -- alternative to traditional radiation treatment, many experts fear that it could leave many men unnecessarily vulnerable to recurrences or potentially serious complications.

    Nokia 5800 XpressMusic First Impressions

    from Symbian-Guru.com:

    >>In short, it has a great sensitivity level that is very adequate to regular taps, and I found myself not looking for the stylus to use it, even for typing: the 5800 was in my hands for a mere 30 minutes, and I was hammering the on-screen keyboards in no time. Tactile feedback was really nice, and not annoying like I imagined it would be. It’s a small vibration that you can only perceive if you focus on it, but when you forget about it, you find yourself unconsciously getting aware of the taps and the screen’s response, which is pretty cool.
