2010 March Data Center World: Keynote Speech

2010 March Data Center World: Keynote Speech

Posted By Zen Kishimoto, 5 hours ago

Last October, the Data Center World keynote address was delivered by a facilities person. This year, it was delivered by Brian Lillie, CIO of Equinix, who is IT enough for me.

Brian Lillie

The title of his presentation was "Are You Ready to Ride the Four Tsunamis About to Hit Your Data Center?” His four tsunamis happen to be:

  • IP traffic increase
  • Mobile data traffic increase
  • Emergence of cloud computing
  • Data volume increase

“Superspend” on Data Centers “Dysfunctional”

a different opinion on Wall Stree's recent attitude toward data centers:

“Superspend” on Data Centers “Dysfunctional”

Tom Steinert-Threlkeld
Securities Industry Blog, March 14, 2010

Can it be?

Trading firms and marketplace operators are wasting money on the big “monolithic” data centers they’re building, as electronic networks proliferate, market data explodes and volumes surge?

That’s the contention of Ronald H. Bowman Jr., author of “The Green Guide to Power: Thinking Outside the Grid” and “Business Continuity Planning for Data Centers and Systems: A Strategic Implementation Guide.”

At last Thursday’s meeting of the Wall Street Technology Association, he said the financial thinking and planning – and, remember, this is America’s finance industry – can be ‘remarkably dysfunctional.”

The executive vice president of Tishman Technologies says the “superspend” on 100,000-square-foot data centers at $2,700 a s square foot in New Jersey, where Wall Street essentially has moved, needs to be rethought. Tishman has built data centers for Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and Bank of New York Mellon.

Cyberknife surgery revolutionizes radiation

from The Frederick News-Post:

>>A 22-year-old young woman, with much of life ahead, was diagnosed with a tumor near her pituitary gland located in the base of the brain. She could either undergo an operation and risk losing her eyesight and the ability to have children, or she could try a new, cyberknife radiation treatment.

She chose the latter. Six years later, she's given birth to two healthy children and still has her eyesight. The tumor has not returned.

The cyberknife program has been at Frederick Memorial Hospital's Cancer Center for nearly a year.

AboveNet’s new low latency transatlantic service is targeted specifically at the financial sector, supporting critical applications such as foreign exchange trading and market data feeds.

“With venues such as Chi-X now operating out of Equinix in Slough and NASDAQ operating out of Carteret, New Jersey, we’re seeing a growing requirement for low latency transatlantic connectivity. We’re expecting strong demand for our premium service from organizations such as investment banks, hedge fund operators, as well as foreign exchange and equities traders,” commented Director of Sales and Marketing for AboveNet UK, Alan Berryman. “Because we can now guarantee every aspect of our transatlantic and metro services, customers can always rely on AboveNet to deliver the low latency performance their business demands,” Berryman further added.

AboveNet Chief Technology Officer, Rajiv Datta, said, “Adding the low latency capability between New York and London is a natural extension of our industry-leading Agility Guarantee program. In addition, we can now provide high bandwidth connectivity between London and our 16 U.S. markets for a broad range of customer applications.”

John Adler's departure

from the Accuray Yahoo MB:

While I don't have inside info on what went on with Adler in the ARAY boardroom (and doubt few on this board do), I have spoken to him at Users Meetings, listened to his lectures, and presented cases to him on the CK Society's MD forum. He is well-respected by surgeons and rad oncs, and extremely knowledgable about not only cranial radiosurgery (where he is one of the leading contributors in the field) but extracranial as well. I'm hard pressed to think of a physician more expert on CK literature or applications. He is a great advocate for the potential of SRS in general and CK in particular, but will tell a patient or doc when surgery is better in a given situation. I know neurosurgeons who were considering a radiosurgery device for their clinic that he has travelled to see and promote CK. It is inaccurate to describe him as a figurehead whose last good idea was 17 years ago.

Adler is a physician, not an engineer, physicist, or software designer. (I'm sure VAR has some of those who used to work for ARAY.) I'm not worried that VAR will design a LINAC on a robotic arm, as that is a completely different paradigm than their current machines. But I can't see Adler's departure as anything but a huge blow to ARAY. Who is the lead MD now in the company who can credibly promote CK to the medical community? (Don't tell me that short thoracic surgeon whose name I'm blanking on.) I can't conceive of any reason why Alder would be threatened with a lawsuit and run out of ARAY by management, other than because he objected to them enriching themselves at the expense of the company and shareholders.

Third Largest U.S. Stock Market to Commence Exchange Operations in Early Q2; Coincides With Launch of Its New Trading Platform and Data Center

JERSEY CITY, N.J., March 12, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

Direct Edge announced today that the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") has officially approved the exchange applications for its ECN trading systems, EDGA and EDGX, as two registered national securities exchanges. Direct Edge anticipates its equities marketplace to commence exchange operations in early spring 2010.

"This approval is an exciting milestone for Direct Edge and, importantly, for all market participants who value choice and competition in the market," said William O'Brien, Chief Executive Officer of Direct Edge. "Direct Edge's business is centered on delivering innovative products, creative solutions and better executions to our customers -- not simply matching buyers and sellers -- and exchange status affords us even more opportunities to continue doing just that."

"We are extremely grateful to the SEC for working so closely with us throughout this process and for its swift yet diligent approach to reviewing and approving our exchange applications," said O'Brien. "Furthermore, we are extremely thankful to our strategic partners and all of our customers who recognize the merits of our offering and have helped make Direct Edge the third largest U.S. stock exchange behind only the NYSE and NASDAQ."

Direct Edge filed for exchange status in May 2009.

The Direct Edge Exchange will launch on a next-generation trading system designed to deliver optimal trading speed and efficiency to customers while helping to reduce technology costs for the company. The infrastructure will be housed in the new state-of-the-art Equinix NY4 data center in Secaucus, NJ.

demand for information services is growing

from Networkworld.com:

>>Even as data centers strive to reduce power consumption, they must deal with the reality that demand for information services is growing. Storage needs are booming, as is global Internet traffic and use of mobile Internet devices, says Brian Lillie, who is CIO of co-location provider Equinix and the keynote speaker at the Data Center World conference.

Today’s data center manager is demanding “six 9s or better,” he says. “Reliability is one of the biggest concerns, and embedded in that is they need power. Power is probably the largest issue they’re dealing with.”

Equinix Said to Seek $170 Million Loan to Fund Asian Expansion

>>Equinix Said to Seek $170 Million Loan to Fund Asian Expansion

By Katrina Nicholas

March 4 (Bloomberg) -- Equinix Inc., the data-center operator for companies including Microsoft Corp., hired four lenders to help it borrow $170 million for expansion in Asia, according to two people familiar with the matter.

DBS Group Holdings Ltd., General Electric Capital Corp., ING Groep NV and Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc will help Foster City, California-based Equinix get a five-year loan, said the people, who asked not to be named as the plan is private.

The term loan may pay interest of 4 percentage points more than the London interbank offered rate, one of the people said. No-one could be reached for comment at Equinix’s main office after normal U.S. business hours today.

Touch Screens that Touch Back

from Technology Review by MIT:

>>Touch Screens that Touch Back

New piezoelectric technology will make screens more tactile.

Forget putting your phone on vibrate. A novel "high-definition" touch-feedback display can give a touch screen the feel of a textured surface. The technology was developed for mobile devices by the San Jose CA-based company Immersion, and is a step toward mimicking the feel of physical buttons on flat screens.

...

Immersion is experimenting with making the digit at the center of the virtual dial pad feel as if it stands out more than the other keys. This would make it easier for the user to feel where the other keys are, says Kingsley-Jones.

What's most interesting about Immersion's approach, according to Hayward, is the lateral movement of the screen. Because it's difficult for nerves to distinguish the direction of such movement, it's possible to trick the senses into feeling upward pressure where there is none, he says.

Immersion is also developing software to record the feel of a real button and replicate that on-screen. In blind tests, subjects were unable to distinguish between pressing a real button and a simulated one, says Kingsley-Jones.

Immersion is talking to handset manufacturers and expects the first devices incorporating the technology to appear toward the end of the year.

Access Pharma (ACCP.OB) Product Development Update – Sponsored Post

Access Pharmaceuticals (OTC: ACCP.OB, “Access”) develops and commercializes products for the treatment and supportive care of cancer patients, including:

- MuGard, an FDA-approved rinse for the management of patients with oral mucositis, a debilitating side effect of various cancer treatments

- ProLindac, now in Phase II clinical testing of patients with ovarian cancer

- The Cobalamin Platform, a drug delivery system for the oral administration of large molecules that are currently administered via injection (insulin, human growth hormone, fertility drugs, etc.)

MuGard has been commercially launched by Access' partner, SpePharm, in six European countries, including the UK, Germany, Italy, Norway, Greece and Sweden. Over 15,000 bottles of MuGard have been used by over 2,000 patients to date. Access is now conducting pre-marketing activities, including ramping of commercial production, with the goal of a U.S. commercial launch by April 2010.

ProLindac is a next-generation DACH platinum anti-cancer compound which includes a proprietary nano-polymer drug delivery vehicle that allows for over ten-times the dose of platinum to be delivered in a targeted manner to cancer cells, with a much better safety profile compared to standard platinum-based drugs which cause significant and cumulative neurotoxicity.

Access will conduct a combination study evaluating ProLindac with Taxol (paclitaxel) for second-line treatment of platinum pre-treated patients with advanced ovarian cancer. This is a multi-center study being conducted in Europe in up to 25 patients with primary efficacy endpoint goal of achieving at least a 63% response rate. Access expects to begin patient dosing by April 2010.

The Cobalamin Platform is a drug delivery technology that involves coating a nano-particle with a vitamin B-12 analog (cobalamin) that binds to intrinsic factor in the gut and triggers binding to cellular receptors which absorb the entire package, resulting in exponential increases in absorption through the gut of large molecule drugs/hormones typically administered by injection.

In June 2009, Access announced that two bio-pharmaceutical companies would conduct preclinical, proof-of-concept studies in animals (rat and dog models of diabetes) before proceeding to more formal negotiations for the Company's oral, long-acting (basal) insulin product candidate. Final results from the non-exclusive collaborators are possible during Q1 2010.

Equinix and Switch and Data 4Q 2009 results

Both Equinix (EQIX) and Switch and Data (SDXC) recently reported earnings. Here are the links to the Equinix and Switch and Data P/Rs announcing 4Q and full year 2009 financial and operating results. Equinix 4Q conference call transcripts are available, on Seeking Alpha, at this link.

Previous to that, Switch and Data shareholders approved the acquisition by Equinix, with more than 99% of votes in favor of the merger, and holders of more than 85% of Switch and Data's outstanding common stock participating in the vote. The only remaining obstacle to the combination of the two Companies is now represented by the Department of Justice investigation for anti-trust purposes. The Companies expect the closing of the merger to take place in the 2Q 2010, assuming the DoJ green light will be obtained.

In order to finance the Switch and Data acquisition, including the repayment of the indebtedness that it expects to assume, Equinix announced, on February 22, a $500 million public offering of senior notes due 2018.

Given market response, on February 26 Equinix announced that it had entered into an underwriting agreement to sell $750 million of 8.125% senior unsecured notes due 2018, increasing the original offer of an additional $250 million.

Equinix intends to use the net proceeds from this offering also for general corporate purposes, which may include expansion capital expenditures. As a side note, about $300 million are expected to be needed for the cash portion of the Switch & Data acquisition and repayment of that company's debt at closing. More info about the offering are available in this SEC filing, including the rating on the notes, and we'll add more comments about it later in this article.

A quick look at some highlights from 4Q results, starting with Equinix:

  • Equinix reported 2009 annual revenues of $882.5 million, a 25% increase over the previous year;
  • 2009 annual adjusted EBITDA was $408.6 million, a 40% increase over 2008;
  • The Company issued 2010 annual revenue guidance of $1,050.0 million to $1,075.0 million

Without digging too much into the usual metrics we check for a better understanding of the Company's performance, we'll simply resume that Equinix showed, once more, solid growth, well above Street estimates, and strong performance across all regions. You may check several interesting Equinix non-financial metrics at this link. However, 1Q 2010 outlook was probably slightly below Street expectations (partially due to lower expectations from foreign subs due to the recent stronger US dollar performance), while yearly guidance was basically in line.

A very interesting analysis, after the conference call, came from Michael Rollins (Citigroup):

  • "Our study of ongoing capital spending intensity shows the potential for higher capital intensity than long-term guidance, which is dilutive to our valuation analysis.
  • "Our bottom-up analysis of capital spending coupled with our analysis of gross PP&E suggests that capital spending for the existing portfolio is likely to stay in a range between 7% and 10% of revenue over time, implying an economic useful life of 20-32 years, versus EQIX guidance of 5% or a useful life of 40 years."

These comments might be worth a specific article, in the meantime, it's worth reporting that Citi's target price, for these reasons, was reduced to $ 106, but remains above the current share price:

  • However, we believe returns for the business model remain on a solid footing and we may revisit our thesis if the share price pulls back to the $80-90 range given the support levels implied by our discretionary FCF/share analysis.

Also Switch and Data delivered very good numbers:

  • total revenues increased to $205.4 million from $171.5 million for the year ended December 31, 2008, an increase of 20% ;
  • adjusted EBITDA increased to $76.3 million from $56.5 million in 2008, an increase of 35%;
  • billed cabinets increased from 8,110 in the third quarter 2009 to 8,588 in the fourth quarter. This was the largest sequential growth in billed cabinets in over three years.

It's worth noting that both Companies suffered acquisition related expenses in the 4Q worth a few million dollars.

It is also interesting that, as disclosed on Switch and Data 10-K filing:

  • over 50% of new sales in 2009 were in our new or expanded data centers.

As the major expansion made by SDXC was the new data center in the New York metro area, this bodes well as to the results obtained in the financial vertical. Switch and Data ahas also disclosed additional wins in this area, like Chi-X Canada that will, by the end of the second quarter, relocate its primary data centre to Switch and Data’s Front Street facility in Toronto.

A look back at the Equinix conference call, to report some comments that attracted our attention:

  • Stephen M. Smith - CEO
  • A final note in this region, we’re excited to announce that we have made a decision to enter the Shanghai market through a partnership with a local firm named Shanghai Data Solutions. This agreement will allow Equinix to resell capacity in their datacenter to our multinational customers who have a requirement to have a presence in this market. We’ve selected a great partner to enter this new market and have high confidence that we will be successful executing this opportunity.

Equinix is not new to these kind of deals (with a similar one executed in Thailand a while ago), but the importance of the Chinese market makes this a more interesting opportunity than in the past.

It may be worth spending a little more time examining Equinix debt maturity profile, after the new financing:

Here are a few related comments made during the call:

  • Keith D. Taylor
  • Turning to our balance sheet and cash flows, at the end of Q4 our unrestricted cash balance totaled $604.4 million, a $23 million decrease over the prior quarter. We continue to benefit from strong operating performance including strong customer collections as our global DSOs decreased to 24 days and lower than expected cash payments related to our capital expenditures.
  • Looking forward we’re going to assess our opportunity to refinance our existing debt facilities. Hopefully without using equity or an equity linked structure. Although we have not finalized the next steps we’re going to review each of our debt facilities in Europe, Asia Pacific and the US to determine what is the optimum structure given the opportunity in front of us. As part of this initiative we’ll look to maintain the greatest degree of flexibility while attempting to drive down our weighted average cost of capital on an after tax basis.
As we previously mentioned, Equinix new debt has been rated by both Moody's and Standard and Poor's.

Standard and Poor's comments are worth reporting as they resume several interesting aspects of this financing (the rating is available at this link, registration required):

  • Standard & Poor's expects that the company will remain aggressive in expanding its data center facilities over the next several years either through organic expansion or acquisitions. Equinix has plans to add capacity in several markets in 2010
  • We are lowering the issue rating on the company's proposed unsecured note issue, which was upsized to $750 million from $500 million, to 'B+' from 'BB-' and revising the recovery rating to '3' from '2'.
  • We are also affirming the 'B+' corporate credit rating on the company, since the upsized debt issue does not materially change the company's overall credit profile.
  • The positive outlook reflects our expectation of continued strong organic growth in data center leasing business demand over the next year.
  • "While these activities limit its net free cash flow generating ability over the next few years," added Ms. Cosentino, "they provide the platform for higher longer term cash flow generating ability."

This is a key point of this business model: Equinix is putting a lot of cash on its balance sheet to have the flexibility to continue in its aggressive built out of new facilities (or acquisitions) to grow the business, achieve scale, increase its market share. With the growth of the business, the Company is building a larger "cash cow" for the future.

With the SDXC merger to finalise and the synergies and integration challenges that it will bring, new products being offered and new expansions planned, as Rob Powell commented on his Telecom Rumblings web site:

Standard & Poor's rating after the recent Equinix unsecured note offering - the rating is available at this link (subscription required:

>>Equinix Inc. 'B+' Corporate Credit Rating Affirmed; Unsecured Note Rating Lowered To 'B+'

  • U.S. data center and interconnection provider Equinix's leverage, pro
forma for the Switch & Data acquisition and the proposed refinancing, has
    improved since 2008.
  • We are lowering the issue rating on the company's proposed unsecured note

  • The positive outlook reflects our expectation of continued strong organic

Here we'll report just a few lines:

>>7. What do you feel Accuray is doing poorly?

In planning for unrealistic growth, Accuray scaled operations prematurely and needlessly burned through a lot of cash, and at the same time, communication with investors deteriorated terribly. Of note, since the arrival of CFO Derek Bertocci’s, both of the above issues have improved. However, the company has tragically lost touch with what was once a credible and very unique base of surgical users. The CyberKnife product is increasingly becoming bloated and overly expensive. In parallel, internal company processes have the complexity of a company 10 times the size, which is not a good thing for a company so dependent on rapid innovation. Many CyberKnife features were poorly conceived and in the process of development, robbed engineering talent from more important projects. Rather than envision and drive new clinical applications for radiosurgery, Accuray has chosen to spend a lot of energy and focus backtracking into the traditional radiation oncology market, long dominated by Varian and others. Internally, dissenting opinions are frowned upon, and the Accuray board has virtually no background in any of the medical or technical fields that are relevant to company business. For many years now Accuray has done a very poor job of selling to major US academic centers, which represent vital hubs of clinical research going forward. Moreover, because it’s under represented at major medical centers, Accuray lacks political clout within major medical societies and the government. In belatedly following my mother’s admonition “to not say anything, if you can’t say something nice,” I will stop here.

Petition - Cyberknife cancer care for Australia

Cyberknife is a non invasive, sub millimetre accurate cancer treatment that can treat most cancers without the need for surgery or nasty drugs and has no side effects. It can be used for children with cancers with no pain or side effects.
It generally only takes 1 treatment session.
More info can be obtained at:
www.accuray.com including a video of the Cyberknife in use.

Cyberknife is available all over the world. Every state in USA has at least 1 Cyberknife centre.

In fact its available in over 200 centres world wide and treating 1000's of people daily.

For us in Australia to have access to this amazing technology we are required to travel to an overseas country at great expense and stress as it is not covered by our health funds and the Gov't refuses to assist.

Upon return from the overseas destination you are on your own again as any observations of progress need to be done via email, phone etc as the specialist Cyberknife doctor is overseas and Australia has no staff capable of monitoring your progress.

This petition is to force the Gov't in Australia to act and act now to save some of the 40,000 people who die each year from cancer and also to give a more gentle treatment option to those undergoing cancer care now. Our Gov't has been aware of the amazing potential of Cyberknife for over 3yrs as a result of my persistance after my wife had this treatment in USA.

Still nothing is being done but from the 100's of contacts I get every week there is obviously a desperate need for it now.

Please help by joining us in our fight

We now have a "Facebook support group" to get this here, feel free to join others at:

Citigroup Sees Dilution to Longer-Term Returns at Equinix

from mysmartrend.com:

2/23/2010-Citigroup maintained its Hold rating on Equinix but adjusted its price target lower, from $110 to $106.

Analyst Michael Rollins said, "Our study of ongoing capital spending intensity shows the potential for higher capital intensity than long-term guidance, which is dilutive to our valuation analysis. However, we believe returns for the business model remain on a solid footing and we may revisit our thesis if the share price pulls back to the $80-90 range given the support levels implied by our discretionary FCF/share analysis. Prefer Buy-rated Cogent with upside potential to FY10 consensus revenue with exposure to growth from both its enterprise & data center (net-centric) segments."

Rollins continued, "Our bottom-up analysis of capital spending coupled with our analysis of gross PP&E suggests that capital spending for the existing portfolio is likely to stay in a range between 7% and 10% of revenue over time, implying an economic useful life of 20-32 years, versus EQIX guidance of 5% or a useful life of 40 years."

The bank expects the company to report 2010 EPS of $2.07, versus consensus estimates of $2.06.

Is California's data center consolidation plan feasible?

By Mark Fontecchio, on SearchDataCenter.com

When IT pros talk about California's planned data center consolidation, they often use the word aggressive to describe the timeline. Indeed, some think the timeline is so aggressive that it could render the consolidation project impossible.

..

"When you're talking about a $3 billion IT budget, you can get significant savings," said Brian Lillie, the CIO of Equinix, a data center colocation company. "There is probably a lot of low-hanging fruit."

Massive data center consolidation -- by state fiat
Last week, Governor Schwarzenegger issued an executive order calling for a massive consolidation of the state's data centers and servers. The mandate is, by July of 2010, to reduce the total amount of data center square footage used by state agencies by 25% and, by July 2011, to reduce square footage by 50%. The order also mandates that by 2012 IT energy use be cut by 30%.

..

"I think their goals to reduce their footprint and energy consumption are doable," said Jeff Paschke, a senior data center analyst at Tier1 Research. "The big question is the timeline. It doesn't seem too realistic, especially if you look at the track record of other states' data center consolidation efforts."

>>Southeast Georgia Health System wants to acq a CK

THE BRUNSWICK NEWS, GA. | LINDSEY ADKISON | Sat, Feb 20, 2010

Feb. 20--The Southeast Georgia Health System wants to add another tool to its arsenal in the battle against cancer.

On Friday, it filed a certificate of need with the Georgia Department of Community Health in Atlanta.

The health system wants to acquire a $5.5 million CyberKnife radio surgery system.

The state must approve the application.

...

"Most residents of Georgia do not have convenient access to CyberKnife services, as the only CyberKnife in the state is located in Cobb County, approximately 325 miles away from Brunswick," she said.

Morris says if the health system's certificate of need is approved, services will likely be available in six to eight months.

"The start date is contingent on the construction and renovation, though it could be sooner if all the logistics move along smoothly," she said.

ASN (Nuclear Safety Authority)

Incident Radiation at the Center of the fight against cancer Lambret Oscar de Lille (North)

Backgrounder General
Paris, January 18, 2010

On November 9, 2009, ASN was informed by the Center for the fight against cancer Lambret Oscar de Lille, an error has impacted the treatment of 13 patients supported on the CyberKnife ® [1]. Of these 13 patients, this error affected the dose delivered to total 9 patients and for the other 4, the error rate could be compensated during further processing.

This incident report follows an error setting the software calculation of dose on one of the two consoles treatment planning associated with the CyberKnife ®.

This issue is related to human error (incomplete data entry), technical (lack of centralization of data on both consoles) and organizational (not verify the proper data entry on both consoles). Center Oscar Lambret immediately put in place measures to prevent the recurrence of such errors, including checking the operation of two identical consoles treatment planning and systematic double counting of new treatment plans.

The ASN has conducted an inspection December 14, 2009 to examine more precisely the circumstances of the event and the first corrective measures taken by the center. She requested a declaration under materiovigilance be done with the AFSSAPS.

The ASN has ensured that the same error had been committed by the other two centers users CyberKnife ® [2].

She requested a risk analysis is conducted at each change of material, for example when adding a second console.

This incident has resulted, for 9 patients, underdosing or overdosing of the region irradiated by type of treatment carried out, without, however, the dose of critical organ tolerance has been exceeded. Patients have been informed and are under medical supervision especially from the medical team of the Center Oscar Lambret.

Of the 9 cases, 4 are likely to moderate impairment of an organ or function.

Accordingly, the ASN class provisionally incident at Level 2 of the DSC-scale SFRO [3] events in radiation therapy which has 8 (0 to 7).

"high definition haptics"

from BskyB:

>>One such firm is Immersion, who specialise in what the industry calls haptics, or the vibration some phones make when you press buttons on a touch screen.

Otherwise known as tactile feedback, US-based Immersion have made recent breakthroughs with what they call "piezo" - a very thin, precise way to create a range of instant vibrations. The firm's interim CEO, Victor Viegas, told me that the technology brings "high definition haptics" to smartphones, and means the vibrations can be customised to be more like ringtones, and respond to user interaction in record time.

Great PRs

A post by cellodude on the IV MB:

>>Great PRs

I think that these are possibly the best PRs from IMMR I've seen.

Regarding the 100 million sold, I like IMMR thumping its chest and name dropping the top three phone makers. While those of us here know the royalty rate was not ideal, it is still an achievement to go from zero to making haptics an international buzzword.

The other killer PR delivers delightful news of not one but two new versions of TouchSense. VibeTonz is dead, long live TouchSense.

Investors and licensees need no longer be confused between what was a jumble of haptic solutions. Now clearly defined into two camps, series 4000 (moving mass) and series 5000 (piezo), each improve by quantum leaps what has previously been available. One must also assume the days of a dime per phone are quickly coming to an end. I assume series 4000 will be the new "base model" and 5000 the deluxe, with corresponding royalties.

Silent haptics? Screen isolation? Zero latency? We've seen hints of these disparate technologies in the patent domain, but for these to all come together into two all-new product lines is simply fantastic.

I'm sure Ramius is partially responsible for TouchSense reorganization into two pricing schemes.

Kudos to IMMR. With these PRs it feels to me they have finally found traction in their "go-forward" licensing model.

The point is that the therapeutic benefits of radiation have been known since the days of Marie Curie, but thanks to computer software, MRI and CT, therapeutic radiation can now be delivered precisely to where it counts.

CyberKnife Centers of Miami and Palm Beach Announce Key Presentations at CyberKnife Society Meeting

James G. Schwade, M.D., executive director of the CyberKnife Centers of Miami and Palm Beach, (www.morsecyberknife.com), announces key presentations to be made at the annual CyberKnife Society meeting to be held in Dallas in March. This meeting brings together users of the Cyberknife image guided radiosurgery system to present new scientific data and exchange information about the use of this modality.

The CyberKnife radiosurgery treatment for cancer delivers radiation with pinpoint accuracy which ablates cancer cells in much less treatment time in a non invasive delivery method.

Walter Nikesch, PhD, Chief Medical Physicist for the CyberKnife Center of Palm Beach, (www.cyberknifepalmbeach.com) will present on the new, small-volume water Scanner to collect CyberKnife Radiosurgery Beam Data. He will also discuss technical considerations that went into the design and compare beam data measurements with the small volume scanner for CyberKnife with large volume scanners.

James Hevezi, PhD, Chief Medical Physicist for the CyberKnife Center of Miami, (www.cyberknifemiami.com) will present at the "Tips & Tricks" regarding the CyberKnife patient pad he designed. The patient pad advantages are detailed in the published article by Dr. Hevezi, Dr. Nikesch, Dr. Schwade and others on the CyberKnife websites. (http://www.morsecyberknife.com/Media-Articles.htm)

The patient pad allows CyberKnife patients to lay comfortably on this thicker support pad with their arms laying below the trunk of their bodies. This allows us to use more posterior oblique beams for planning without transiting the patients' arms.

With two outpatient facilities in Miami and Palm Beach County, the Morse CyberKnife systems offer geographic flexibility with the world's most experienced clinical radiosurgery teams located in South Florida.

Please visit www.morsecyberknife.com or call 1-800-204-0455, for information on the procedure, contact information, and further details.

State of the Colocation Industry

Great read from Data Center map:

State of the Colocation Industry

Not long ago President Obama gave the annual State of the Union speech, which made me decide to do a State of the Colocation Industry post looking back at 2009/January 2010 and how things look now. This overview will be limited to the big data center providers who focus on carrier neutral colocation, but pretty comprehensive in regards to these.

More specifically I have decided to limit this post to focus on Equinix, Interxion, Telehouse (owned by KDDI), CoreSite (formerly known as CRG West), Telx, TelecityGroup and Global Switch. Other major colocation providers exist as well, but as their focus isn’t primarily on carrier neutral colocation they are not included in this post.

Dr. Joshua Jennings raised his investment rating on the shares to "Buy" from "Hold" and boosted his target price on the stock to $8 from $6.60. He said in a research note that new orders of $92.1 million suggest demand for the CyberKnife system has been good despite "constricted hospital capital equipment spending."

"We believe in the innate technology value of the CyberKnife system, and accelerated clinical interest and adoption could precede long term positive clinical data," Jennings wrote in a note to clients.
