Hurricane Electric Announces Second European Network Expansion in Two Months with New Point of Presence at Equinix Paris Exchange
PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hurricane Electric, the world’s largest IPv6-native Internet backbone and colocation provider, announced that it has established a point-of-presence at the Equinix Paris Exchange.
The expansion will enable Hurricane Electric to improve fault tolerance, load balancing and congestion management infrastructure capabilities in its next-generation IP access services. It will also enable Equinix customers to directly exchange IP traffic, or “peer,” with Hurricane Electric’s global Internet backbone.
“Hurricane Electric is excited to connect to the Equinix Paris Exchange," said Martin Levy, Director of IPv6 Strategy at Hurricane Electric. “Adding this exchange to our global network will improve our connectivity in the Greater Paris metro area and France. Hurricane Electric’s global footprint through the exchange will give customers the geographic reach and extended IPv6 functionality they are demanding.”
Hurricane’s new point-of-presence at the Equinix Paris Exchange follows similar expansions in late 2010 at Comfluent in Denver, Equinix Singapore and The Northwest Access Exchange (NWAX) in Portland, Oregon.
A leader in IPv6 for over a decade, Hurricane Electric offers free IPv6 certification, DNS services and tunnel broker service. In March, Hurricane Electric formed a Professional Services Division to help enterprises prepare and cost-effectively transition to IPv6.

>>After 21Vianet (VNET) completed its IPO at $15 ($2 above the high end of the proposed range) and its shares jumped to over $21 on their first trading day, I wrote a brief article wondering if 21Vianet's multiples were sustainable.

Smartphones Lead Global Mobile Market to 20% Growth in Q1
>>According to research firm IDC, the global mobile phone market ballooned in the first quarter of this year, growing 19.8 percent year-over-year, mostly due to the meteoric rise of smartphone shipments, especially in emerging markets. According to the firm’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 371.8 million units in Q1 2011 compared to 310.5 million units in the first quarter of 2010.
Samsung Smartphone Sales
Samsung sold a total of 70 million mobile handsets during the quarter, down 14 percent year-on-year. However, strong sales of smartphones and high-end mobile devices helped to increase Samsung's average sales price and boost operating profit. Smartphones made up 18 percent of Samsung's total handset unit sales for the quarter, up from 4 percent during the same period last year.
In the second quarter, Samsung expects the industry to see single-digit growth in mobile handset demand quarter-on-quarter. The company aims to continue to outperform the market by launching of a range of devices to meet diverse market needs. Continuing its momentum in the smartphone market, Samsung is introducing the new GALAXY SII during the second quarter, with the device slated to be rolled out by 140 mobile service providers in 120 countries. >>Benchmark increases its 2011 estimates, driving the price target to $115 from $105 and maintains a Buy rating.
Equinix's 1Q11 beat was due to better-than-expected revenue, both recurring and nonrecurring. Expense savings that may not fully recur also contributed. As such, some of the beat will not flow through to the rest of the year.
Equinix believes it will complete the hiring of its new salesforce in 2Q11. The new salesforce could start adding to growth by 4Q11, with the full impact coming in 2012 and 2013. Some of the 1Q expense savings will not recur, in part due to the salesforce ramp.

Haptify Announces the Launch of Haptic-Powered Enzo’s Pinball for Android
First Virtual Pinball Game with Full Tactile Feedback Now Available on Android Marketplace
SAN JOSE, Calif. – April 6, 2011 – Haptify, a developer and publisher of haptic-powered mobile apps, today announced that its first title, Enzo’s Pinball, is now available on the Android Marketplace for $1.49. The first virtual pinball title ever to include full-fledged tactile feedback, Enzo’s Pinball lets players literally feel the action on three unique tables as they flip their ball onto each ramp, bumper, and target. Play the most realistic pinball experience available for mobile devices and compete against players from around the world for the top score through the OpenFeint platform.
Enzo’s Pinball features include:
- Three unique pinball tables to master with more coming soon, each with a variety of missions to undertake
- Clockwork Table: avoid getting wound up by an intricate clockwork mechanism dating back to the 18th century and learn the secret of the clockwork pinball
- Steam-Powered Table: stay cool under pressure and navigate a high-voltage playing field to unlock the true nature of the steampunk pinball
- DJ Table: listen to the dark secrets of the record pinball
- Realistic pinball physics brought to life through high-quality haptic feedback, graphics, and sound
- Immersive touch-screen controls and accelerometer support that lets players ‘tilt’ the table, just like in the arcades
- OpenFeint integration with global high score list and achievements
“Enzo’s Pinball is an ideal choice for our first title because it really showcases the subtle-yet-significant power of haptics in gaming,” said Craig Vachon, Haptify Lead. “When you play pinball in real life, you use a combination of sight, sound, and touch to interact with the machine. Cutting that down to two senses, as most pinball titles do by necessity, just doesn’t provide the same level of involvement. I am positive that players won’t look at other pinball titles the same way after they’ve experienced Enzo’s Pinball with haptics.”

Nasdaq: If Bid Wins, at Least One Data Center Will Close
>>Nasdaq OMX Group and IntercontinentalExchange would close at least one U.S. data center if their unsolicited offer for NYSE Euronext is successful, a deal that Nasdaq has promised would create lower costs.
....
"It would certainly involve closing a data center," Mr. Greifeld said in a call with reporters. But without further research, "it's impossible to know which one would be the right candidate at this point," he said.
Industry experts said a merger of the exchanges would likely choose to keep open NYSE's data center in Mahwah, N.J., that opened last August.
Having fewer data centers could lower costs for firms that have to invest significant funds in keeping expensive equipment as close as possible to all four stock exchanges and other major trading venues. Traders will still want to connect to exchange operators Direct Edge and BATS Global Markets, which run out of different data centers.
That will ensure that third-party companies that operate independent data centers, like Savvis and Equinix , still play a role in connecting traders to market data.

"We're going to be in good company" at the data center in Secaucus, Marinaro said. "When you're closer to some of the Wall Street firms that you may do business with, it just [obviates] any latency issues."
Surge will also be leasing space for a disaster-recovery data center at an Equinix site in Ashburn, Va. The firm has leased backup office space at Equinix's Business Continuity Trading Room in North Bergen, should disaster occur in Manhattan.
Surge is Equinix's first client at the North Bergen facility, which is to become operational April 15, said Will Speck, a manager of global marketing for financial services at Equinix.

Global Crossing hones government sector focus
>>Connected Planet: Are you seeing opportunities in cloud services?
Sutton: Vivek Kundra, who is the chief information officer for the federal government, included cloud services in his 25-point plan. He said [agencies] should be spending 25% of their budget on the cloud. That’s good for us.
We have partnerships with Savvis, Equinix and Carpathia to use their data centers to host services. On smaller projects, like the hosted interactive voice response system we did for the U.S. Census, we have some capacity in our own points of presence.
Automotive: A Potential Catalyst for Immersion's Growth
>>The automotive segment today represents a small share of Immersion Corporation's (IMMR) activity, having ranged historically between 6% and 12% of total revenues. If we look at a chart resuming the vertical's performance since 2003, there's room for a few thoughts:

New Galaxy Tab may help Samsung lead non-iPad segment
>>Samsung Electronics, on March 23, announced two new sizes for its Galaxy Tab tablet PCs – an 8.9-inch model and a 10.1-inch model – and since Samsung has strong advantages in both global PC and telecom channels, market watchers believe the two new models should help Samsung achieve the lead in the non-iPad tablet PC market.
...
In comment, Digitimes Research senior analyst Luke Lin pointed out that the expanding iPad market share does not necessary mean non-iPad tablet PCs will fail.
Lin used the example of the smartphone market and pointed out that iPhone also had strong sales performance in the past, but iPhone's success did not create a significant impact toward Android-based smartphones since these devices also saw strong sales growth.

Toshiba Launches a New Tablet: Expect Immersion Tech to Be Inside
>>Whenever a new Apple (AAPL) product is launched, people like iSuppli start looking for the components inside the device, and it's not unusual to see some key suppliers getting a positive or negative impact on their stock price due to the sales expectations generated by this leading customer alone.
Following Immersion Corporation (IMMR) requires a similar approach: the company's success depends on the implementation of its haptic technology into more and more products, and is directly linked to their sales to consumers, as Immersion mostly collects a royalty per unit sold, like in the mobility segment.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Hands-On at CTIA 2011
>>The Galaxy Tab 8.9 was the worst-kept secret of CTIA 2011. Then again, it’s not like Samsung really tried that hard to keep it one; the teaser site made it clear enough that another Tab was in the plans for the US, one that was in between the 7-inch and 10.1-inch versions. Samsung is trying hard to offer as many options as possible, and has done the best at giving a diverse lineup of tablets.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4 and 5 to arrive in the US this spring
>>Remember the Galaxy Player (or Galaxy S WiFi) we saw back at MWC? Sure you do, it basically strips out the 3G and calling functionality of a Galaxy S phone and leaves you with a Android 2.2 media player or shrunken tablet. Well, it looks like both the 4-inch Galaxy Player 4 and the 5-inch Galaxy Player 5 will be headed to the US this spring. Samsung's demoing the players here at its NYC Spring Product Showcase today, although it isn't talking exact timing or pricing.
Display tech to watch this year: Haptics create a buzz
>>The current generation of smartphones built using Immersion's designs is limited to a few basic vibrational patterns capable of emulating a button click or a low-frequency woofer pattern to augment the bass sounds of a ring tone.
But Immersion and other haptics vendors are developing more sophisticated techniques that finely tune vibrational frequencies to simulate different textures on the screen surface, and to target specific areas of the screen so that, for example, only the finger touching a "depressed" key on a virtual keyboard feels a click sensation.
...
But the technology is costly to use in a smartphone. "We can't drop that into a $200 cell phone today, but it's coming," he predicts.Therein lies the rub. TouchSense 5000 is available now, and Sheehan says several manufacturers are "actively evaluating" it. But no manufacturers have announced phones that use it or indicated when such devices might become available.
Immersion - White Cap Report
>>Shares have been on a tear lately. And if the pace of licensing growth continues to ramp up, we should see higher prices ahead. Look for dips as buying opportunities.
Data Centers, Recognized as Key Communications Hubs in Japan, Continue Work After Quake
>>As we noted in our previous article, there have been no reports of major data center outages after the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit Japan last week.

Citigroup Comments On Equinix's Latest NY-Expansion Highlights
>>Citigroup has published a research report on Equinix after recently meeting with company management that highlighted another New York Metro expansion.
In the report, Citigroup writes "Our takeaways from our walking tour of NY-4 included: 1) the first two phases of NY-4 seem booked at a 90%-plus rate, while we believe the third phase is off to a good start (opened in mid-2010) with roughly 30-35% billing and 45-55% booked or reserved from our observations; 2) Equinix highlighted favorable demand trends from its financial vertical as financial exchanges are a substantial contributor to the demand and occupancy of the facility; 3) we believe the increasing utilization of NY-4 is likely to lead to another capacity expansion in a nearby facility in which the company has already signed a lease during 2010 for 325k square feet."

Japan May Prioritize Power for Data Centers
>>“The biggest concern at the moment is power disruption,” said Furuta. “We have fueled the generators at our Tokyo data centers to their full capacity, which will provide emergency backup power in the event of any power disruption. We have a priority contract with our fuel supply company. We are closely monitoring the situation, but depending on future status, they could have to prioritize among the priority contractors, or in an extreme case, the government may have to prioritize the national energy to the devastated area. We do not expect an issue for fuel in the short term, but the mid to long term future is always unknown.”
Significantly, Furuta said the government recognizes the important role played by data centers in keeping critical services operating in the aftermath of the disasters.
“The government (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) is working on prioritizing power and energy supply to data centers which are considered critical information and telecommunication, and we are working with them,” he said.

>>NextDC founder and CEO Bevan Slattery today warned that Sydney's power infrastructure is rapidly becoming restrictive, limiting future datacentre investment in the city.
"There is a real lack of power in Sydney and you can't get power upgrades in the CBD at all," Slattery said, adding that the suburb of Alexandria is of particular concern. Slattery said that rival datacentre provider Equinix was lucky to get the power it needed to run its new datacentre there.
"Getting power anywhere around Alexandria is very difficult," he said.

Japan Earthquake: Internet a Communications Lifeline as Telephone Lines Fail
>>Japan’s devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami put the country's telecommunications and Internet infrastructure under intense pressure. Millions of telephone lines were unavailable soon after the quake. Carriers were limiting voice calls on congested networks, with NTT DoCoMo (DCM) restricting up to 80 percent of voice calls. Mobile networks were also congested or unavailable. Data connections were actually the least impacted, so that many Japanese turned to Web access in order to send out e-mails or updates to social networking services to communicate with families and friends.

Pet-CT Technology with the Cyberknife
>>Construction to house the only CyberKnife in the region is also underway.
The robotic CyberKnife treats difficult tumors and can automatically adjust the patent's movement.
"For instance if you had a brain tumor that was near the optic nerve and you didn't want to injure it with radiation therapy because it's right next to the brain tumor this would allow you to give it so precisely 3 dimensional stereotactically. So that's the beauty. it's magic."
The new technology is part of a 6 million dollars is upgrades for patients at the Lewis Cancer Pavilion.
