When it came to the iPad, the biggest talk over the past month was its haptic display. Haptic touch responds to you as you touch the display. Does your smartphone vibrate when you tap a key? Then you’ve already experienced haptic technology.
Virtually every device manufacturer has at least one haptic device under its belt except for Apple. Up until now and, obviously, the foreseeable future, Apple users will be limited to smooth touchscreens that provide no feedback.
The tech blog Pocket Lint believed Apple was working with the haptic technology company Senseg to update the new iPad. It didn’t help that Apple’s invite said “We have something for you to see. And touch.”
Without the haptic technology, it’s hard not to view the new iPad as a minor upgrade from last year’s model.
The reference to “touch" is more problematic.
But it could well mean Apple has implemented new haptic technology in the iPad. Haptics is tactile feedback technology that lets users feel sensations like vibration and force feedback -- e.g. a kind of mini-shockwave feeling in a game controller, or a grainy or “heavy” feeling when certain onscreen objects are touched to differentiate them.
“It’s an intriguing idea that Apple could use haptics to offer more feedback in a user’s gestures,” says IHS iSuppli analyst Rhoda Alexander.

Another demo introduced "layered haptics," which allows developers to deliver simultaneous distinguishable effects. A video of a rollercoaster ride, for instance, allows you to feel the movement of the coaster, the rush of the air, and even the passengers screaming from behind you. Few details of the transaction are available at the moment, but the obvious ratio behind the acquisition seems to be the desire to complete Jamba Juice's product offering through the introduction of a premium tea category that is aligned with Jamba's focus to quality, 100% natural ingredients with no artificial flavors or preservatives. Given the fact that Jamba's major product (smoothies) has a strong summer consumption, the addition of an article with opposite seasonality may also be considered a positive.
The first phase of the new DC11 data center is expected to cost around $88 million in expansion capital, and will add 1,200 cabinets with capacity for 1,800 cabinets in future phases. Phase two of DC10 is expected to cost $21 million in expansion CapEx. As a reminder, phase one of DC10, which adds about 15,500 square feet of co-location space, is scheduled to open next month.

Fujitsu is already a large handset and tablet maker in Japan with about a fifth of the market, but is looking to challenge the dominance of European market leaders such as Apple and Samsung, the FT said.
The newspaper did not say when Fujitsu would launch the products in Europe's fast-growing and high-margin mobile device market, but said the company is targeting a "double-digit" market share in the next three to five years.
The Intelligent Haptic System consists of 1) the Lumino Haptic Console Switch, a driver seat’s main controller with haptic and lumino functions, 2) the Haptic Steering Wheel Switch, a haptic function switch on the steering wheel, and 3) the Haptic Touch Screen, an LCD touch screen with dashboard switches.
The Lumino Haptic Console Switch is the vehicle’s main controller and allows the driver to concentrate on driving while controlling all the major functions with tactual feedback for the entire hand. LEDs around the switch provide visual feedback (lumino function) with various menu tree-based colors.
With the Haptic Steering Wheel Switch, the user can use his/her thumb to control air conditioning, phone, media and other functions just like they do with the iPod.
The Haptic Touch Screen is a resistive touch screen, which uses pressure by a finger on the LCD screen and provides icons for dashboard switches.
The company, which also uses Equinix's International Business Exchange in Sydney for local payment processing, handles EFTPOS and e-commerce transaction and payment security for several Australian clients including Westfield, Target and Tabcorp.

Immersion Corporation, a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, today announced that it has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission ("ITC") against Motorola Mobility. The complaint alleges that certain Motorola Mobility Android-based smart phones infringe six Immersion patents that cover various uses of haptic effects in connection with touchscreens. Immersion has also filed a patent infringement complaint against Motorola Mobility in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

Benchmark says, "Equinix stock has risen on sustained demand trends, solid growth prospects, visibility to achieving free cash flow per share, and the potential to convert to a REIT. We increase our price target from $115 to $140 per share as these positives combine with a reasonable valuation, under 10x 2012E EBITDA or only 11x 2012E AFFO. We view Equinix as a core communications holding and likely a REIT within 2 years."
The SEC got back to us and in response to the question of whether this [crash] was related to a Facebook surge, spokesman John Nester said, "Greatly increased traffic that began shortly before 5 pm slowed the public website. We are bringing on additional capacity to handle the load."
A quick look at some of the general market data, to put these numbers in prospective. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 3.4 % in January, while the Standard & Poor's 500 gained 4.4 %, the best performances, for both indexes, to open a year since 1997.
The Nasdaq gained 8% for the month, in its best January since 2001. Akamai (AKAM) is the only stock under our coverage delivering a slightly negative return, of just -0.15%. All other stocks are in the green, with Equinix (EQIX) delivering the best performance with a 18.30% increase in the month.The firm said handset shipments dropped to 17.7 million in the fourth quarter from 21.1 million in the preceding quarter, as it reduced less profitable feature phones.
The node will help NL-ix with traffic performance between its own and Equinix’s customers at the Internet Business Exchange.
NL-ix CEO Jan Hoogenboom said the data center will be complete in Q3 this year.
At the end of his research, the analyst raised the company valuation range to $146-$156 (from $123-$131), and maintained an Outperform rating.
While we do not believe the conversion is round the corner, it is certainly an interesting exercise to examine some of Equinix's metrics in a different way and try compare them to other data center providers specialized in the wholesale business.

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumer Electronics Show -- Modern vehicles are supporting motorists with a growing number of new functions. In this context, Continental, the international automotive supplier, is researching more intuitive, safer and simple control options for motorists. The latest development is the integration of haptic feedback into touch-sensitive surfaces. By this means, the driver is able to sense directly whether he has actually activated a "touch element" after touching it. With its innovations, Continental is supporting automotive manufacturers all over the world with the development of modern human-machine interfaces (HMI). The first series orders underline the promising future of this technology, and at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2012, Continental will show several applications for touch elements that provide direct feedback to users.
Gaining ground: Touch-sensitive surfaces in cars
Touchscreen smartphones are enjoying increasing popularity as more and more people rely on their simple and intuitive operability. Motorists are also calling for more touch-sensitive surfaces in cars. Products such as secondary displays, large-scale displays in the central console and touchpads are ideal for facilitating driver interaction via adapted and context-related presentation of information. As early as 2014, Continental expects one in six new cars registered in Western Europe, the USA and Japan to be fitted with touchscreens.
More attention to traffic thanks to haptic feedback
"However, it is not possible to simply transfer the concept of touch-sensitive surface operations from the field of consumer electronics into a car exactly as it is," explains Guido Meier-Arendt, an HMI expert at Continental. "Up to now, feedback was received directly through classic control elements such as rotary switches or switches and buttons, the eyes, ears and above all the operating hand whereas touch-sensitive displays in cars were disregarded as an important feedback means." To make the operation of touch elements even safer and more effective for motorists – whose primary task is, after all, to keep their eyes on the road – Continental is focusing on tactile (i.e. haptic) feedback from touch-sensitive surfaces. For example, slight counter-pressure from the display on the driver's finger indicates that an operating step has been performed successfully, making it unnecessary for the driver to look at the screen again.
For the haptic feedback, Continental calculates the exact position of the finger in the touch process. Touch sensors on a purely electrical (capacitive), electromechanical (resistive) or optical (via an infra-red sensor) basis perform this task. They reliably locate the position of the finger to less than a millimeter deviation. Depending on the position identified, a decision is made on how haptic feedback is to be provided. Whether a touch element is actually activated also depends on the operating force, which is calculated via further sensors or through signal processing steps on the basis of existing data. The actuators needed to carry out mechanical movements can generate various types of haptics information within a frequency range of up to 200 hertz and more.
Feedback can be provided in forms ranging from slight counter-pressure to vibration, depending on the respective control concept. This allows different feedback strategies to be implemented which are tailored to the manufacturers' requirements. Series of tests have shown that haptic feedback is accepted much better by motorists than visual or acoustic signals. Continental has also made use of this principle in its Accelerator Force Feedback Pedal (AFFP). Thanks to haptics, the world's first active gas pedal in serial production offers a new possibility to provide imminent danger warnings to motorists directly through the feet, for example.
Ready for serial production – for more safety and pleasure to use
Continental has completed the basic pre-development phase and is now in a position to work on specific implementation for new vehicle models together with automotive manufacturers. "Let's say that the combination of touch-sensitive surfaces and haptic feedback is a tangible innovation, that will provide even better support for motorists," declares Eelco Spoelder, Head of the Instrumentation & Driver HMI division. "Our customers can use this technology to improve safety for passengers, but also to create a kind of magic sensation for the operator due to the haptic feedback."
Continental will showcase a version of this technology during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, January 8-13, 2012. Short for Cadillac User Experience, CUE is built around an 8-inch touch screen, kind off like an iPad. ”Customers want things that are elegant, intuitive, and simple to use,” Cadillac Global Marketing Director Jim Vurpillat told a crowd of journalists.
Samsung, the world's No.2 handset vendor, targets sales of 374 million handsets next year, up from 325 million units the company projected for this year, Korea Economic Daily reported citing industry officials.
Out of the 374 million handsets, Samsung aims to sell 150 million units of smartphones next year, the report said.
