Eurex migrates to new data centre

from www.finextra.com:

>>The international derivatives exchange Eurex has completed the re-location of its active matching engines into a new single data centre.

With this step, Eurex achieved a further milestone of its technology roadmap. The active Eurex trading and clearing infrastructure is now located in the International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre of the international IT company Equinix Inc., a global provider of data centre services. Eurex and Equinix have already been offering the co-location solution Proximity Services since 2006.

As part of the migration, Eurex upgraded and replaced all of the matching engines with the latest high-performance hardware. As consequence, all Eurex members benefit from an increased throughput of the Eurex system.

Since Deutsche Börse had already moved the Xetra cash market in July 2011 the migration of the Eurex system enables Deutsche Börse Group to offer its clients co-location services for derivatives and cash markets from a single location. Clients also benefit from the fact that as one of the largest global providers of data centre services, Equinix bundles a large number of exchange-related service providers, including data vendors, under one roof. Moreover, through the linkage of many telecommunication providers, Eurex participants can choose the access to the Equinix data centre that is the most cost-effective for them.

Equinix Marketplace Seeks to Connect Customers

From Data Center Knowledge:

>>Equinix says its marketplace will allow its tenants to offer new services, and enlarge their digital supply chain to improve application performance, reduce cost and generate revenue.

...

“For many companies and industries, data centers are not just warehouses for storing large amounts of information – they have become high performance business-exchanges where organizations connect with their ecosystem of partners, suppliers and customers in the digital supply chain,” said Jarrett Appleby, chief marketing officer for Equinix.

Equinix business exchange plays proximity card

from GigaOM:

>>It may seem counterintuitive, but in the cloud computing era, location does matter, at least when it comes to where data is stored and processed.

...

That’s the thinking behind the new Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX). Equinix, the big data center services provider, built the online marketplace to help its data center customers–which include SaaS companies, managed service providers and financial services outfits–expand into new markets and tap into an existing battery of potential partners that already use those data centers, according to Jarrett Appleby, chief marketing officer.

Global tablet PC shipments reach 18.7 million units

from http://www.digitimes.com:

>>Global tablet PC shipments, affected by the weakening worldwide economy after August and high inventory levels from some tablet PC brand vendors, reached 18.7 million units in the third quarter, an increase of only 27.5% sequentially, far less than the strong sequential growth of 60.9% they achieved in the second quarter, according to Digitimes Research senior analyst James Wong.

...

As a result, shipments of non-iPad tablet PCs only grew 10.1% sequentially in the quarter.

Cadillac Unveils 'Intuitive' Vehicle Infotainment

from www.designnews.com:

>>GM engineers at the rollout said that CUE was in development for three years, in part because it broke ground by using technologies that were previously not employed in autos. Capacitive touch, in particular, has not been used in vehicles until now because of questions over its ability to serve in "automotive grade" units.

"We had to develop a touch screen that would work in Michigan in winter and Phoenix in summer," Bly told Design News. "Others have not pursued the technology in the past, but we decided to take on the challenge." Bly added that GM's success with automotive-grade capacitive touchscreens was largely due to a cooperative effort with an unnamed supplier. Bly said that GM would reveal the name of the supplier next spring.

30 million Galaxy S devices sold

from http://androidandme.com:

>>Announced in a press release today, Samsung has outed just how many Galaxy S devices have been sold around the globe. Samsung already sold some 20 million original Galaxy S phones. Numbers for the Galaxy S II are equally impressive at 10 million, or one phone a second since launch. That’s a grand total of 30 million Galaxy S devices sold. With full US availability and the holiday season right around the corner, that number will rise very quickly.

(this device alone might mean about $3 million in royalties for Immersion so far).

Reduce latency by avoiding the Internet, urges CDN provider

from www.totaltele.com:

>Limelight Networks takes advantage of Equinix's data centres to drive traffic away from congested Internet; claims live streaming is 'necessary evil'.

In an environment when milliseconds can directly affect revenue streams, it's important that content providers reduce their latency. And avoiding the public Internet is key to that, Chris Townsley, director of European sales at content delivery network provider Limelight told Total Telecom on Monday.

..

Limelight focuses on getting the data as close to the end user as possible, carrying it along its own dedicated infrastructure to its data centre partner Equinix's servers.

There's "almost no Internet," Townsley said, aside from the final link between the user and the nearest Equinix data centre.

Sony Ericsson - Q3

Bert Nordberg, President and CEO of Sony Ericsson commented, “We delivered a solid 73 million Euro improvement in income before taxes as we rebounded from the previous quarter with a 33 percent increase in sales. Android-based Xperia™ smartphone sales now account for more than 80 percent of sales and we have shipped 22 million Xperia smartphones to date. We will continue to invest in the smartphone market, shifting the entire portfolio to smartphones during 2012.”

Units shipped during the quarter were 9.5 million, a 9% decrease year-on-year due to a decline in feature phone shipments, partially offset by an increase in smartphone shipments. The 25% quarter-on-quarter increase was due to the higher volume of smartphones shipped.

Sales for the quarter were approximately Euro 1.6 billion and essentially flat year-on-year.

Sony Ericsson estimates that its share of the global Android-based smartphone market during the quarter was approximately 12% in volume and 11% in value.

Starbucks eyes juice-bar business

from msn.com:

>>Starbucks (SBUX) as a juice bar? According to news reports, the coffee giant may soon add smoothies, wheatgrass and acai to its menu.

The New York Post reports that Starbucks has just hired Yohana Bencosme, the former manager of the trendy Manhattan juice bar Liquiteria. Bencosme's new job is to train staffers in Starbucks' Seattle headquarters.

....

Would juice bars make sense at Starbucks? The very idea triggered a 3.5% drop in the stock price of Jamba Juice owner Jamba (JMBA) on Thursday.

Starbucks is desperate to bring in more afternoon traffic and even offers an afternoon discount to morning customers in many areas. Smoothies and other juice items would help draw the lunch and afternoon crowds. They would also appeal to children.

Jamba Juice comes to Manila

from http://business.inquirer.net:

>>The latest craze in the US is opening its Philippine flagship store in Bonifacio Global City on November 11.

Jamba Juice hopes to establish its position as a healthy yet tasty option to the growing active lifestyle of Filipinos.

Jamba Inc. tied up with Max’s Group of Companies to develop 40 Jamba Juice locations in the Philippines over the next 10 years.

“The Philippine market is a market that we feel we could be strong here,” answers Sharon Fuentebella, EVP for Max’s Group of Companies and managing director of Jamba Juice Philippines on why they’re choosing the country.

She adds that since tropical fruits are endemic here, the creation of their famous juices will be enjoyed by most Filipinos.

Jamba Juice will sit on a 130-square-meter area with 50 seats and over 100 juices and smoothies to choose from. This will be the first store for the Southeast Asia region.

Jamba Juice of Bakersfield Quickly Boosts Traffic and Sales by Ten Percent

Bakersfield-based Jamba Juice Franchise owner with four stores uses Trumpia's SMS Marketing and Facebook postings to build its mobile marketing database, boost in-store traffic and increase sales.

Baskersfield, CA (PRWEB) October 11, 2011

Jamba Juice of Bakersfield, which owns and operates four local franchises of the popular better-for-you beverage and food company, is using Trumpia's bulk SMS and QR Code Marketing combined with Facebook marketing to increase its in-store traffic by around ten percent. As a result of the increased traffic, Jamba Juice of Bakersfield has realized a significant boost in its sales.

Trumpia is the leading solution provider for Multi-Channel Marketing and Messaging, offering mobile text, email, voice broadcast, IM and social media in a single, unified web-based platform.

The Bakersfield-based business attributes some of its success to creating and placing signs at each store, inviting prospective customers to connect for special daily deals by texting its mobile keyword, Jamba, to its premium short code, 99000, or scanning a Quick Response (QR) Code.

The business also promotes its daily deals on its Marketplace Jamba Facebook fan page, encouraging people to opt-in to its mobile marketing database to receive special coupons that are usable at this particular outlet, which is just one of its four locations in the north-westernmost part of the city.

For example, the Jamba Juice franchisee routinely posts messages on its Marketplace Jamba Facebook fan page that call upon visitors to text its mobile keyword to receive a “buy one get one free (16oz) smoothie deal.” In doing so, the business is growing its Facebook following and, at the same time, using Trumpia's mobile text marketing feature to get more customers to come into the store.

Using both Trumpia's SMS text marketing and QR Code marketing features in this way, Jamba Juice has grown its opt-in mobile database to around 1000 customers in just two months across all of its four stores.

Jamba Juice of Bakersfield typically sends out mobile coupons and deals to this SMS marketing database at least once a week. Customers can redeem the coupon simply by showing the coupon message stored on their phones.

“While we considered many marketing options, we decided to exclusively use Trumpia's mobile text and multi-channel marketing platform,” said Brett Thomas, owner of Jamba Juice of Bakersfield. “We're glad that we did and we were right about our hunch that Trumpia would provide us with the most direct, immediate and affordable way to connect with local residents and quickly build a loyal following. The return on investment that we've enjoyed since we began using Trumpia's platform has been tremendous.”

“Jamba Juice of Bakersfield's use of our SMS text marketing and cross-channel messaging capabilities is a perfect example of how small businesses can harness the power of Trumpia to quickly build their market presence, establish their brand and gain results – more quickly than any other marketing strategy or tactic,” said Derek Rhie, co-founder and director of sales and support for Trumpia. “We're honored to help Jamba Juice of Bakersfield and other small business owners build vibrant, successful businesses in a tenth of the time it would take them to do so with a single channel or more traditional media.”

Cadillac CUE: GM's luxury brand ups the infotainment game

from www.autoblog.com:

>>Capacitive Screens Finally Come to Cars

Although resistive touchscreens are the norm for most vehicles, in part to their durability, availability and low cost, Cadillac is finally bringing a fully capacitive touchscreen (think iPhone screen) to market. The engineers we spoke with admitted that the barrier to entry was much higher, requiring more time and expertise to get the screen up to automotive grade, but the results – both graphically and interactively – are a clear indication that what's succeeded in the consumer electronics space is on its way to vehicles.

But where Cadillac has upped the game is with its industry-first, proximity-sensing, haptic feedback and multi-touch interface.

..

The same goes for the haptic feedback setup, which integrates with the capacitive screen to give the user a subtle pulse when selecting a function or what engineers described as a "sandpaper" sensation when scrubbing through a list.

Cadillac’s Connected Car System Arrives in Style

from Wired:

>Cadillac strips down the typical cluttered dashboard electronic interface, reducing radio and entertainment controls to four physical buttons. All of the buttons are haptic-feedback enabled, which means you’ll feel a pulse of vibration to let you know that you’ve activated a button. The idea is that the driver spends less time fumbling with the dashboard controls, and more time paying attention to the road.

“We’ve seen things from competitors that are almost like you’ve got a typewriter in your car,” said executive director of interior design Dave Lyon in an interview. “It’s way too distracting.”

Cadillac CUE Infotainment System Test Drive

from http://blog.laptopmag.com:

>Including haptic feedback with a touchscreen display would seem like a no brainer at this point, but Cadillac is the first to include it as part of an in-dash infotainment system. During our hands on we tried scrolling through a list of XM Radio stations and found that the haptic feedback was quick and responsive without feeling overwhelming. It made scrolling through lists and selecting various settings feel much more natural.

Cadillac unveils CUE infotainment system for connected driving excitement in 2012

from Engadget:

>>Cadillac may be an unlikely exhibitor for a mobile conference, but it is using CTIA as an opportunity to unveil the Cadillac User Experience (CUE). CUE is its new car infotainment system that will debut next year, first in the XTS and later in the ATS, before spreading to the company's entire line. It combines an eight-inch capacitative multitouch LCD and haptic feedback with proximity sensors for a more rewarding user experience.

Kyocera Makes Haptics Happen

from http://hothardware.com:

>>According to a report by Tech-On!, Kyocera Corp. demoed a new touchscreen panel for mobile devices at CEATEC Japan that simulates the feeling of touching a physical button.

Bearing the moniker “New Sensation Touch Panel”, the new touchscreen apparently uses piezoelectric elements embedded between the LCD and touch panels. When the user’s finger touches a given spot on the screen, the piezo elements sense the pressure and vibrate, which gives the user the sense that they’re touching a physical button.

Samsung Q3 Profit Beats Estimates on Smartphones

from Bloomberg:

>>Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s second-largest maker of mobile phones, reported profit that beat analysts’ estimates as demand for Galaxy smartphones outweighed slumping sales of displays and semiconductors.

“I’m quite amazed,” said Lee Seung Woo, a Seoul-based analyst at Shinyoung Securities Co. “It seems like there was a big surprise on the smartphone side.”

The company, which aims to sell more than 60 million smartphones this year, probably shipped half of that in the third quarter, Shinyoung’s Lee said.

Samsung will likely meet its target to sell more than 300 million handsets this year, including basic models, J.K. Shin, head of Samsung’s mobile-phone division, said Sept. 26.

The South Korean company’s sales accelerated from the second quarter after it began selling the Galaxy S II, a successor to its best-selling Android device introduced last year to counter Apple’s iPhone.

KDDI haptic touch screen pushes your buttons

from http://news.cnet.com:

>>If you're always pressing the wrong icon on your smartphone touch screen, Japan's KDDI is working on a haptic screen that makes it feel like you're pushing a button instead of just a flat surface.

Prototypes shown off here at Ceatec 2011 respond to pressure and provide a sensation of clicking a keyboard button. The cellphone giant demoed potential applications including easier Web browsing and more interactive game playing.

The tech was developed for industrial applications by Kyocera, which was exhibiting a small tactile screen for industrial use at the trade show outside Tokyo. It consists of a touch panel sitting on an LCD with piezoelectric elements.

Tier 3 to Bring Enterprise-grade Virtual Private Cloud to New York with New Data Center

Tier 3's Multi-Region Architecture Provides Highly Available, Secure Hybrid Cloud for Business Continuity, Business Agility. Enhancements to Tier 3 Enteprise Cloud Platform Announced at Interop NY.

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 05, 2011

Today at Interop NY, enterprise cloud platform provider Tier 3 announced that it will add a data center in the New York metro area to complete the multi-region architecture of its enterprise-grade infrastructure as a service solution. New York joins Seattle and Chicago for a three-region model that enhances the high availability and built-in business continuity of the Tier 3 enterprise cloud. With its intuitive management controls, high performing, highly availability infrastructure and platform-agnostic orchestration and automation layer, Tier 3 meets the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) requirements of companies wishing to deploy public or virtual private (hybrid) clouds for increased business agility.

"Enterprises across the country are actively identifying apps they can move to a virtual private cloud, but to do so they are demanding a true enterprise-grade cloud platform that provides control, transparency, security, performance and a high availability five 9 SLA," said Adam Wray, CEO, Tier 3. "These customers also want to benefit from the peace of mind of built-in, multi-zone business continuity features and the value that advanced operation automation or auto-ops capabilities bring to significantly reducing operational complexity and costs. Tier 3 meets all of those customer requirements."

Tier 3 chose to locate in New York based on frequent requests from customers, prospects and partners for a regional solution that offers high performance and low latency with the best combination of cloud-based utility and enterprise-grade availability and security. Tier 3 elected to collocate in Equinix's New York IBX® (International Business Exchange™) for its enterprise-grade connectivity and carrier-neutral environment. This allows the company to offer Tier 3 Direct Connect for secure, performance-optimized connectivity - including Cross Connects and Equinix's Carrier Ethernet Exchange as well as private VLAN and VPN.

Benefits of Bringing the Tier 3 Cloud to New York:

  • Filling Gap in Region's Public Cloud Market: Tier 3 provides a virtual private cloud IaaS solution fully managed thru the operating system, which eliminates the complexity of managing bare metal while still empowering enterprises with the control and transparency they require in a hybrid or virtual private cloud. With Tier 3 Direct Connect, New York metro customers can leverage private, secure, and performance-optimized connectivity.
  • Enhances Robust Built-In Business Continuity: Today, with every enterprise server deployment, Tier 3 keeps multiple copies mirrored locally and replicated automatically to an alternate data center, thus preserving a rolling 14-day backup. The new multi-region architecture now also ensures risk mitigation for single point of failure issues while allowing for complex deployments to be "rolled" across geographic regions. These new features compliment Tier 3's other enterprise-grade cloud features, including 99.999% SLA across entire system; high availability via provisioning across clusters with separate ESX hosts; secure multi-tenancy architecture, compliance and audit-ready policies and monitoring; and built-in business continuity/disaster recovery.

Availability: Tier 3 expects to be operational in New York by the end of the quarter. Visit Tier 3 to demo this solution, including the Autoscaler 2.0 features announced at this show, this week at Interop NY booth 804.

KDDI haptic smartphone prototype

From Engadget:

>>Surprisingly, the feedback was effective to the point that we could even feel the ridges on the virtual keypad -- KDDI's ambition with this is to allow the partially-sighted to touch-type (presumably alongside some UI visual aid as well), while everyone else can also benefit from preemptive hyperlink selection in the web browser with the help of fine haptic feedback, thus reducing the chances of hitting the wrong links (see the video below). We were also impressed by the pressure sensor on the touch layer that enabled a "soft punch" input and a "hard punch" input in the demo game, so you can imagine the possibilities with even more layers implemented; except the prototype we saw was already bulky enough. Regardless, as far as availability is concerned there's no info just yet, though this technology is currently patent pending.

Jamba Juice Foreign Expansion And Licensing Strategy Seems On Track

Read the whole article at Seeking Alpha:

>>Jamba Juice (JMBA) turn around story may probably be resumed in a relatively simple way: in 2009, the management team decided to reduce the number of company owned locations, and concentrate its growth efforts on franchise-operated stores and licensed consumer products – with both strategies potentially representing very high margin contributors to the company's bottom line.

Equinix is delivering an additional 20,000 square feet in Elk Grove Village

from datacenterpractice.com:

>>Equinix is delivering an additional 20,000 square feet in Elk Grove Village in January 2012,its third and final phase. They will continue to see competition from newly delivered space at Latisys and CoreLink.

Equinix is our top pick overall.

from www.twst.com:

>>TWST: What are your top picks right now and why?

Mr. Weller: We're pretty long the sector. Equinix is our top pick overall. We felt, and still feel, that valuation is very attractive. If you look at the multiples or valuation on an enterprise value to EBITDA basis - and that's the way we look at it, and I say it that way because from a REIT perspective, the typical valuation metric that REIT analysts will focus on is price to FFO or AFFO or net asset value, but we look at EV/EBITDA - Equinix at approximately seven times forward EBITDA is, we think, pretty attractive. Again, we felt like the last three quarters have all been around restoring confidence that the issues Equinix experienced were company specific as opposed to it being some big negative inflection point for Equinix and for the data center market. I think mission accomplished so far.

Unfortunately, the last few weeks have been devastating to Equinix's share prices, as well as any other stock on my screen because they reported very solid results as I mentioned, and you saw the stock up to $105, and now we're sitting here in the low $80s. We still think that's a good story.

The stock closed at $5.72, or almost 10% higher – while small caps may be very volatile, especially in this market environment, it may be worth looking for some fundamental reasons that could explain this sudden move, apart from the usual suspects, short covering, or “someone in the know.”

ViviTouch haptic technology hands-on: electroactive polymer giving a 'high definition feel'

We were most impressed by the pinball game demonstration using the Pulse, and even more so with a similar demo on a modified first-gen iPad that house two ViviTouch actuators -- there was certainly a more natural feel to the game, especially when the pinball hit the bumpers.

Cellphones ComScore calls Android top dog, Apple pulls further ahead of RIM (US data)

from Engadget:

>>
According to ComScore, out of the 82.2 million people in the US with a smartphone (up ten percent from last quarter), Android came in first as the biggest platform yet again, capturing a whopping 41.8 percent of the market like a boss. In a not-so-close second, Apple was able to snag 27 percent, followed by RIM in the third place spot with 21.7 percent -- down 4 percentage points from last quarter.

Smartphones to account for majority of handset shipments by 2015, says IHS iSuppli

from Digitimes:

>>Global smartphone unit shipments will soar to 1.03 billion units in 2015, more than double the 478 million in 2011. This will cause smartphones' share of global cellphone shipments to increase to 54.4% in 2015, up from 32.5% in 2011.This rise to dominance is all the more remarkable considering that smartphones accounted for only 15.8% of the total cellphone market in 2009.

Within the smartphone market, the fastest-growing category will be low-end models, defined as devices with limited features and lower memory densities relative to higher-end products. Shipments of low-end smartphones are expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 115.4% during the period from 2010 through 2015, compared to just 16.4 % for mid-range to high-end smartphones.

Electric Cloud Partners With VMware to Build Smart Development Clouds

Equinix and Electric Cloud speaking today at VMworld® 2011 on how end-to-end automation of the build-test-deploy cycle and cloud resources accelerated Equinix's software development

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- VMworld 2011 -- Today at VMworld® 2011, Electric Cloud®, the smart development cloud company, announced that ElectricCommander® 4.0, the latest version of its enterprise-class automation solution, will integrate with VMware vCloud® Director 1.5 to enable smart development clouds. Brian Lillie, Equinix CIO, and Martin Van Ryswyk, Electric Cloud VP of engineering, will present "Beyond the Cloud Hype" (Session CIM2628) at VMworld 2011 today discussing how Equinix implemented a smart development cloud to accelerate its software development and test cycle. The session is at 5:30 p.m. today.

With this integration, Electric Cloud and VMware jointly address the challenges both development and IT face by providing a smart development cloud solution that automates development on top of cloud infrastructure. ElectricCommander automates the entire build-test-deploy process with an intuitive workflow automation solution, executing the operations and coordinating hand-offs between teams. ElectricCommander integrates seamlessly with VMware vCloud Director 1.5, allowing IT to automate the setting up, configuring and tearing down of virtual machines as they are needed to improve cloud resource utilization and eliminate VM sprawl.

"The constantly fluctuating resource demands of software development make it an ideal fit for the cloud, but without automation it's not enough," said Mike Maciag, Electric Cloud CEO. "By pairing the end-to-end automation of ElectricCommander with VMware vCloud® Director's superior cloud resource management, we can enable smart development clouds that support the 'bursty' nature of development, giving developers ready access to resources as they are needed, and automating the entire build-test-deploy cycle for faster, smarter development."

ElectricCommander provides increased visibility into resource usage, providing IT with the information they need to optimize resources. For developers, a smart development cloud powered by ElectricCommander and VMware vCloud Director means automated development that allows faster iterations and continuous integration throughout the build-test-deploy process. Ultimately, customers enjoy faster time to market and improved software quality.

"ElectricCommander and VMware vCloud® Director work hand-in-hand to enable application development on the cloud," said Dan Chu, vice president, Cloud Infrastructure and Services, VMware. "Taken together, they optimize self-service and elasticity for developers, and comprehensive resource management for IT."

Equinix Implements Smart Development Cloud

For Equinix, a provider of global data center services, ElectricCommander and VMware vCloud Director have proven to be the solution to challenges including error-prone manual processes, disconnected development environments and manual hand-offs between teams. Equinix implemented a smart development cloud supported by ElectricCommander and VMware vCloud Director that tightly couples the development process to its internal "private" cloud infrastructure.

Implementing a smart development cloud with ElectricCommander and VMware vCloud Director has allowed Equinix to create development workflows that enable its software developers to automatically provision resources for both development and test environments. Multiple projects now share a common development framework and the same private cloud infrastructure, while retaining unique processes and tool integrations as needed. This smart development cloud also enables resources to scale for peak usage and allows multiple tests to be run in parallel.

"Electric Cloud and VMware have allowed us to create a smart development cloud that reduced our time to execute development and IT infrastructure processes from hours down to minutes, reduced environment set-up from a week to two hours, and reduced our errors to almost zero," said Equinix CIO Brian Lillie. "Our smart development cloud has also increased visibility and transparency throughout the development process, and allowed our team to better collaborate and more fully align to reach our common goals as one integrated team."

Jamba Juice To Open Its First Two Canadian Stores In Toronto

On May 23, Jamba Juice (JMBA) announced an agreement with Canada Juice Corp. to develop 80 stores across Canada over the next 10 years. The first Jamba Juice Canadian locations were anticipated to open in late 2011.

Thanks to PostCity, we now get more details about the first two openings:

The first Canadian Jamba Juice will open in three to four weeks in The Annex, at 495 Bloor Street West, in the former home of Walk in Wok Out. The second will be in Yorkdale mall. While these two locations are the only confirmed ones to date, “there is not a province we will not be in over the next 24 months,” Aaron [Serruya] says. The Canadian locations will be identical to their American counterparts.

Aaron says that Jamba’s fruit smoothies are addictive and that people are anticipating their arrival. “Customers will come everyday. It will be an alternative to coffee.”

The expansion of its international franchise stores is key to Jamba's growth – and, given the business model, future earnings and cash flow generation.

Right now, Jamba Juice operates about 310 locations, while 436 shops are franchise-owned.

The company, as James White, the CEO, remarked during the last conference call, intends to strongly expand the number of franchised locations in the next few years:

Let's move now to store expansion via our franchise system, which allows us to accelerate our growth, increase our brand presence, improve our overall margin and reduce capital requirements. Our ambition for international is significant, but very actionable and on track. We're focused on 10 priority markets where we can open 50 to 100 units in each market. We'll sign a master franchise agreement with a strong local partner who has a successful track record as a premier operator and brand developer.

A similar strategy is being pursued in the USA, as remarked in the Q&A session:

Gregory McKinley - Dougherty & Company LLC

Okay. And what's your franchise pipeline look domestically here now that the refranchising transactions are complete?

James White

For us, our market plan, as we look into the immediate future, so call that this current year and through '13, we would expect in the 50- to 70-unit range for that set of 3 years, it will be largely...

Gregory McKinley - Dougherty & Company LLC

Per year, 50 to 70?

James White

Per year. It will be largely franchise. We'll end up opening 8 or 9 company units this year. That will probably be cut in half as we look to the following 2 years, and we'll focus more on development with our current franchise partners as we fill in. We will continue to grow in our nontraditional venues, airports, college campuses and those kinds of venues moving forward.

Jamba Juice recently reported Q2 results that were much better than expected. While the company remains in the middle of its turn around plan, and shares are also suffering some pressure as two large shareholders are liquidating their position, even a partial execution of this growth plan (that also includes licensing Jamba branded consumer products, now in over 25,000 outlets) could deliver, in a few years, a completely different company, capable of reporting good earnings and a strong cash flow.

NYSE Weighs Shutdown Options as Irene Risk Closes Subways

from Bloomberg:

>>Equinix Inc. (EQIX), which operates data centers used by exchanges and alternative markets including dark pools to house their main computers and trading technology, will have more employees ready to work if the storm affects the operation of its facilities. Dark pools are private venues that compete with exchanges without displaying bids and offers publicly.

Samsung introduces new GALAXY smartphone naming strategy, expands GALAXY smartphone range

from Engadget, Samsung's P/R:

>>SEOUL--(Korea Newswire) August 24, 2011 -- Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced a new naming strategy for its GALAXY range of smartphones. The creation of the new naming system is marked by the release of four new GALAXY smartphone, the GALAXY W, GALAXY M Pro, GALAXY Y and GALAXY Y Pro, all of which run on the powerful Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating systems.

Samsung has created a new and simplified system of naming its smartphones, focused on its ever-expanding portfolio of industry-leading Android devices. The naming structure will organize and group all devices into five classes, identified by a single alphabetical letter. Devices will then be further designated by an additional indicator which will identify specific functionality.

"As Samsung continues to innovate, our goal is to provide consumers with an experience uniquely tailored to their needs. We have introduced steps to ensure users can simply identify the device designed to deliver the perfect experience for them," said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung's Mobile Communications Business.

"In addition to this new naming strategy at IFA this year we unveilling the GALAXY W, GALAXY M Pro, GALAXY Y and GALAXY Y Pro – designed with the professional and social consumer in mind. These products further build on the phenomenal success we have enjoyed with the GALAXY range."

New ways to identify your GALAXY Smartphones

According to the new naming structure, new class designators refer to the specific category that the smartphone product fits into, for example a premium device, or an entry-level device. All classes will be used within the higher branding of the 'GALAXY' smartphones.

- "S" (Super Smart) – Devices at the very pinnacle of Samsung's mobile portfolio. This class will only be used on flagship devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S, the award-winning smartphone that has already sold 10 million units throughout the world.
· "R" (Royal / Refined) – Premium category models, a combination of power, performance and productivity for the individual who wants to be defined by the technology they carry.
· "W" (Wonder) – High quality, strategic models, perfect for those seeking a balance between style and performance.
· "M" (Magical) –High-performance models at an economic price-point.
· "Y" (Young) – These are entry models or strategic models for emerging markets or a younger audience more sensitive to price.
Class indicators allow a more specific description of the key selling points of a device:

- "Pro" – This indicates that the device includes a QWERTY keyboard for speedier email typing and increased productivity for professionals.
- "Plus" – This indicates that the device is an upgrade from an existing model.
- "LTE" – This indicates that the device is designed to utilize LTE (Long-Term Evolution) connectivity standards, a 4G standard to provide increased mobile network capacity and speed.

Chi-East, the independent, pan-Asian trading venue, and Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), a provider of global data centre services, today announced that Chi-East has chosen Equinix’s Singapore 2 (SG2) International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) as its primary data centre. Chi-East, which commenced operations in the fourth quarter of 2010, is the world’s first exchange-backed, non-displayed trading platform1 for securities listed in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

With the selection of Equinix, Chi-East’s participants will benefit from the data centre provider’s existing carrier and financial network connectivity infrastructure, offering participants low latency proximity hosting options for the 3,264 securities currently supported on Chi-East’s system. This includes all SGX-listed shares, all Hong Kong Main Board listed shares, the component stocks of the TOPIX 100 and all listed ETFs in the three markets.

“One of the unique features of Chi-East is our ability to provide non-displayed trading to clients located throughout Asia from a single location in Singapore. To do this, we have selected a partner that can provide low latency services to our trading participants,” said Ned Phillips, CEO of Chi-East. “We chose Platform Equinix because of its established financial ecosystem, low latency infrastructure and highly secure environment.

“Equinix constantly meets the stringent requirements of the financial community for high performance, connectivity and low latency. We are pleased to support Chi-East in achieving its goal of becoming the first exchange-backed non-display liquidity venue in Asia Pacific,” said David Wilkinson, senior director, business development for Equinix in Asia Pacific.

“The addition of a strong trading venue like Chi-East to the Equinix portfolio showcases our capabilities to provide a neutral environment with optimal connectivity. ZURICH / GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — August 18, 2011 — Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), a provider of global data center services, today announced that it has successfully passed the external audit for ISO 27001 certification for its six International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers in Switzerland.

The ISO 27001 audit specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, operating, monitoring, reviewing, maintaining and improving a documented Information Security Management System, taking into account the organization’s overall business risks.
