Vocus, Australia - Equinix S.J.

Sydney (8th July 2008) - James Spenceley, CEO of Voice and Internet Company Vocus, has
announced a major boost to the quantity and quality of Australia’s Internet capacity, with the
company commissioning its undersea capacity and US network.
“Today we have commissioned the International Vocus Network including our first US POP.
Australia now has an additional path into the country, free of legacy links, built for speed and
directly connecting to the US Internet,” explained Spenceley.
“Now, for the first time in a long while, ISPs have the option of a wholesale provider with access
right to the heart of the Internet,” he continued.
The high performance IP network has 65 (soon to be over 100) direct settlement free peering
relationships in the US, including many Asian carriers and popular websites such as Google
and
YouTube. It runs on dual 2.5 Gigabit wavelengths on the Southern Cross Cable Network.
Instead of having to traverse multiple networks for access to popular web content, Australians
connected to a Vocus ISP will have direct access, giving a far superior and faster Internet
experience.
Vocus is working with Cisco, the global technology leader and networking equipment
manufacturer. Vocus’ core network is built on Cisco’s flagship SDH switches, specifically the
Cisco ONS 15454. The network also marks Vocus offering an Australian industry first -
International Point to Point Ethernet product between Australia and the USA.
Other products on offer include Voice E1s and SDH services between Australian and the USA.
Vocus has also become one of the first customers in the world for Cisco’s next-generation Cisco
ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers.
“Vocus is a technology focused company. We built this network from scratch and were
determined to use only the latest equipment. The Cisco aggregation services router was the
platform of choice with its ability to support large amounts of IPv4 and IPV6 routes and line rate
10 Gigabit Ethernet Interfaces,” explained Spenceley.
“This network will also play a critical role in helping Vocus provide uncompressed International
Voice minutes. Having access to our own bandwidth means we don’t need to compress voice
and can offer a high-grade international voice service at market leading prices.”
Vocus Group provides wholesale voice and Internet access to telecommunications companies
and ISPs across Australia.
