IP Traffic and Pricing Trends

An interesting comment from: Telecom Ramblings

>>Here it is:

Internap's IP/Data Revenues

As you can see, Internap’s IP revenue was dead flat for two years at $25M quarterly, nothing could budge it. Then, in 2006, something happened at last - yes, traffic grew faster than pricing declined - and since then Internap has been doing better and better. At least until last quarter when they screwed up their integration of the Vitalstream CDN business and there was collateral damage.

In my book, this is evidence for Dan’s case, that in mid 2006 there was a resurgence in this sector. One that continues today, Cogent’s and Level 3’s pecadillos not withstanding. But that growth, while real, remains a bit weak yet - about 10% a year at Internap for the last two years. Their real growth product these days is colocation.

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell has told GameDaily BIZ that he believes he can actually serve 600 trillion games through his uWink business

>>uWink offers a variety of those same social experiences that Bushnell sees as essential to a game experience. And there's other news, such as new locations in Mountain View, California, and in Los Angeles at Hollywood and Highland.

"Probably the most important [aspect] is that we have decided to sell our software to anybody," announces Bushnell. "When you look at numbers..." He asks for a pen. "Right now, we serve about six million games per restaurant." McDonalds famously measured their numbers of burgers sold, but Bushnell measures the games.

"We're going to be selling our software, and right now we've got some inquiries on the part of some really interesting people." Those people find the menu ordering system to be an efficient, labor saving device.

"We've got this thing where I get to serve the games," he says, and they don't care about the games, "and I get a little piece of the revenue."

"I believe that, by 2020, that I can...be in 100,000 restaurants," estimates Bushnell. So at six million per year, he continues, figuring on the napkin, "Zero, zero, zero." He pauses, adding. "Zero, zero."

"Six hundred..." Bushnell says, pausing once more to count just how large this number is. His publicist helpfully guesses how the sentence ends, "Million games?"

But the man responsible for the business of interactive entertainment looks up from his napkin. "Six hundred trillion," he says calmly. And as the number sinks in, "That's a lot," he says. "Now what's wrong with that? A 100,000 restaurants?"

AfterDawn.com - Nokia & touchscreens

>>"Currently, the market for touchscreen products is a niche market. We always aim for a situation where we can cover all the segments with all the options," said Senior Vice President of Nokia Markets Anssi Vanjoki. He added "We will introduce products from the very low segment to the highest one featuring this type of functionality."

Despite a drastic price reduction compared to the original, the new iPhone is still out of reach for many consumers. If Nokia is able to capture the interest of consumers who would like to own an iPhone 3G but just can't afford it there should be a lot of market potential. Of course if they're plan isn't wildly successful it could be a fairly expensive misstep.

GigaOM - Samsung Instinct: Novelty, Not Novel

>>The touch experience on the Instinct is a novelty design. It’s what Samsung calls a haptic touch screen, which means it vibrates when a user touches in a command. Pogue calls it gimmicky and he’s right, but I liked it anyhow. However, it’s hard to think of ways to integrate that vibration into features that push the Instinct to go beyond the constraints of a modern cell phone. In contrast, the iPhone’s novel use of accelerometers and software give it the ability to orient itself (something the Instinct can’t do). That’s a feature that provides a similar Wow factor as haptic touch, but also can be used to change that way games are designed, turning the movement of the device into a type of joystick. That’s novel.

ORIENTATION BASED MULTIPLE MODE MECHANICALLY VIBRATED TOUCH SCREEN DISPLAY

Abstract

A system and method is disclosed for reconfiguring the graphical user interface (GUI) of a mechanically vibrated touchscreen display associated with a portable mobile communications device that is operable in a variety of modes. The reconfiguration of the GUI is based on the orientation of the portable mobile communications device. An orientation sensing mechanism senses whether the portable mobile communications device is currently in a portrait or landscape orientation. An orientation sensing application accesses an orientation profile that associates each mode of operation with either a portrait or landscape orientation and determines which mode of operation is the default mode for the sensed orientation of the portable mobile communications device. The GUI of the mechanically vibrated touchscreen display is then reconfigured for the default mode of operation.

Assignee Name and Adress: SONY ERICSSON MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS AB

Tactile feedback touchscreen display means driven by software controlled operating modes can quickly reconfigure a portable mobile communications device display to represent multiple different modes or applications such as those presented above.

Integrating motion/orientation sensing technology with tactile feedback touchscreen displays allows the portable mobile communications device to automatically reconfigure itself for a different mode of operation without the user having to delve into the intricacies of the user interface to manipulate the functions.

The mechanically vibrated touchscreen display is configurable and can provide a tactile sensation that gives the user the sensation of actually pressing a button.

The mechanically vibrated touchscreen display is configurable and re-configurable to suit the mode or application desired by the user. In this example, when the user presses an area of the mechanically vibrated touchscreen display that corresponds to one of the buttons that is associated with the PSP.TM. interface, a tactile sensation is returned to the user that indicates a button was pressed.

Atrium Network joins Equinix Financial eXchange

London

Atrium Network, provider of smarter connectivity for the financial community, and Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the leading global provider of network-neutral data centres and Internet exchange services, announced today that Atrium Network has joined the Equinix Financial eXchange by co-locating in Equinix datacentres in both London and Frankfurt.

Members of the Atrium Network extranet community will be able to further reduce their latency benefiting from Atrium Network’s exchange proximity. Atrium Network can offer clients a single point of connection to Deutsche Boerse, NYSE Euronext LIFFE, Borsa Italiana, OMX exchanges, BME, Chi-X Europe and Turquoise. Equinix Financial eXchange customers can now access even more liquidity pools and benefit from resilient ‘back haul’ through their single point of connectivity with the Atrium Network extranet.

Equinix Financial eXchange is a community of common interest, consisting of capital market participants such as execution venues, buy and sell side firms, market data providers, technology utilities and network service providers, that locate operations within Equinix data centers in order to implement a high-performance, low latency connectivity infrastructure within a neutral environment.

Commenting on joining Equinix Financial eXchange, Emmanuel Carjat, CEO at Atrium Network said, “Since the introduction of MiFID, we have been focusing on minimizing latencies between clients and both the traditional and emerging pools of liquidity. In addition, we see back haul and crossover between the liquidity pools as a key challenge. Customers have identified varied challenges in pulling data back from execution venues and see this as a potential area of risk. We are pleased that by proximity hosting and becoming a member of Equinix Financial eXchange we have been able to deliver resiliency for our customers and confidence that as new MTFs come to market, data haul will be fully resilient.

Petrina Steele , VP Business Development, Equinix added, “We are delighted to welcome Atrium Network and its extensive global customer base to Equinix Financial eXchange. We have been impressed with Atrium Network’s focus on addressing their clients’ needs to address the data haul challenge and we welcome such innovators to the Equinix Financial eXchange membership.”

Amazon outage

An interesting opinion about the recent Amazon outage:

>>Dr. Supranamaya Ranjan, a senior member of the technical staff at Narus, says Amazon is typically adept at "load balancing" -- responding to customer visits by spreading its computing resources efficiently between the computer servers that are in the best position to respond to that customer at that time. But during the outages, he said, that was not the case; his visits to Amazon.com were often handled by faraway or already overloaded servers.

"That does lead me to conjecture that they are in the process of re-architecting the whole way their content distribution system works and the causes for this could have been this new Unbox service," Dr. Ranjan said.

Equinix Datacentres enable Camelot to deliver cutting-edge UK National Lottery for the next 10 years

Equinix Datacentres enable Camelot to deliver cutting-edge UK National Lottery for the next 10 years

London

Equinix Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the leading global provider of network-neutral datacentres and Internet exchange services, and Camelot, the licensed operator of the UK National Lottery, today announced that Camelot will deploy operations for its new communications network in one of Equinix’s European datacentres.

After winning its third licence to operate The National Lottery for 10 years from February 2009, Camelot is implementing its carefully-prepared transition plans to ensure that the lottery is in the best possible shape for the start of the new licence period. The plans include the introduction of a new communications network to replace the existing ISDN network in National Lottery retail outlets.

Camelot will operate the new infrastructure within a dedicated datacentre suite at the Equinix facility, which will form the central hub of Camelot’s information systems, processing all of the data coming in from its new satellite network. The move will provide Camelot with direct access to a high-performance datacentre platform designed to host high-density computing infrastructures offering a rich source of robust network connectivity.

These important elements will provide Camelot with a cutting-edge infrastructure that offers a high-performance and reliable platform for new lottery products and player services for the next 10 years.

Jonathan Root, Chief Systems Architect at Camelot, said: “Equinix is playing a critical role in enabling us to meet our plans for the third licence. Our service delivery infrastructure demands a more sophisticated datacentre and we were attracted by the premium solution provided by Equinix. We can build our systems in an extremely secure environment, which benefits from acknowledged operational excellence and the added resilience of direct access to multiple network providers.”

Michael Winterson, VP Sales and Marketing at Equinix in Europe, commented: “Camelot has made considerable achievements over the last 13 years, running the most cost-efficient lottery in Europe and returning a higher proportion of lottery revenue to society than any other major lottery operator in the world. Its commitment to a high-performance communications infrastructure has played a critical role in these successes. The partnership with Equinix will provide them with a perfect platform to continue this outstanding success story.”
