Longsight ready to expand into Equinix CH3 data center

The Longsight Group is proud to announce the addition of a new data center to support growth, performance, and high reliability of services for our hosted clients. As service and storage use continued to expand, we explored new space in top-tier data centers. Equinix has long had a top reputation in the data center industry. Our conversations with Equinix all pointed to the CH3 facility in Chicago as their premier facility, a building that has never suffered power downtime in its existence.

Servers don’t like to lose power, and we’ve made substantial investments to date to ensure that our systems would never lose power via separate A and B power feeds. Our investment at Equinix CH3 includes four 208v power feeds to each rack in an A/B configuration. Equinix CH3 provides N+1 redundancy with full UPS systems and backup generators if utility power fails.

Two additional points made our decision to choose Equinix straightforward: 1) A 24x7 security team, every door leading to our cage secured with biometric hand readers, interlocking doors (“mantraps”), and scanning of all equipment entering and leaving the building, and 2) The ability to purchase bandwidth from a huge array of providers instead of being forced to purchase bandwidth from the data center owner. Equinix is a carrier-neutral data center, and we have chosen Internap, a provider of aggregated bandwidth services for our connectivity.

Case Study: Built Green, Built Right.

The Internap Data Center in Boston

>>Internap's newest data center in Sommerville, MA is so power efficient, this 15,000-square foot facility received $453,000 in utility rebates. This presentation discusses some of the techniques, technologies and processes that have been used successfully at Internap to achieve sustainable PUE of 1.3, yielding significant CAPEX and OPEX savings, reduced maintenance expenses and higher overall IT reliability. These same techniques can be leveraged by existing facilities and new data centers of all sizes.

THE NEED FOR SPEED

>>Here at StockCharts, we are constantly looking for ways to get you our charts as quickly and consistently as possible. Much of the past two months has been spent adding and testing two different "web acceleration" technologies to our site in an effort to reduce the time it take for our charts to move across the Internet.

The first technology we tried came from a company called Akamai. While this technology works well for other websites and, at first, showed some promising results for us, when we dug deeper we discovered that it really wouldn't work well for us mainly because when the market is open our charts cannot be cached (i.e., saved for later reuse).

The second technology looks much more promising however. It is called "XIP" and it comes from InterNAP, the same company that currently connects us to the Internet. XIP dynamically adjusts the low-level settings that control how data flows across the Internet. It works best when transmitting large items (such as a chart) across long distances. The bigger the object and/or the longer the distance, the more XIP helps.

(Another really nice thing about XIP is that it doesn't require any changes to your computer - it's a change that we make here in our datacenter. No install, no settings to mess with, just improved speed - pretty nice!)

At this point we've completed our internal testing of XIP and the results look good. In our tests, XIP reduced the time it takes to send out our charts by 30 to 40% in most cases. That said, we now need your help. We want to make sure that if we switch to XIP it won't cause any problems for our users.

unhappy customer

from Web Hosting Talk:

>>Do NOT trust Internap

On the night of April 28th the 365Main facility in Chandler, AZ lost power to 2 data floors. That is about 20,000-30,000 sq feet of colo space that went down. The downtime lasted for over 10 minutes. I should mention that my contract with Internap specifically says a 100% power uptime SLA. Not 4 9's, not 5 9's, 100%. It was later determined to be human error that caused the facility to go dark, but that's not my problem.

...

The moral of this story is that every single person at Internap that I have mentioned is unhelpful, unresponsive, and leaves much to be desired in terms of customer satisfaction.

The impression that I get from these Directors and VP's is that of arrogance. They can't be bothered to return voicemails from unhappy customers, or answer emails providing status updates. How dare a lowly customer speak to them when they have peons below them to handle us worthless customers.

Hopefully my story will drive as many sales away from Internap as possible. I can only hope that no one else has to deal with the customer dis-service that is Internap.

-----

With one contract exception, I've generally had a good experience with Internap. But I agree that their customer service overall has declined somewhat in the last year or two, probably because of the cost cutting they've had to do to turn the company around. And I don't typically work with on things like billing disputes, and that's generally the weakest link in many companies; perhaps my perception would be worse if I had to deal with those issues like you.

...

And while I wish you luck (and you'll probably need it, as Internap is not some small mom-and-pop shop that lets people out of contracts willy-nilly), I'm not aware of any company that's going to let you out of a contract for 10 minutes of downtime.

-----

We were with Internap from 2002-2009.

Internap offers a great product with exceptional stability and engineering support, but their billing/account support functions are not very efficient (that's putting it nicely). We've had billing/contract/order issues that took a year to resolve. Yes, they can be THAT slow. You have to understand going in that their business model is built around providing service to large enterprises, and unless you're spending a minimum of $10K/month, you're really not that important to them. Maybe the number is $100K/month, who knows. I suspect we were one of their smallest colo accounts (period), so my service expectations were set accordingly. But anyway, for better or worse that's the bottom line as to why you don't get much love when you contact them.

Internap's IP service adds acceleration option; CDN getting updates

from Tier 1 Research daily newsletter:

Internap gets back to basics with promo plan for CDN

from Tier 1 Research daily newsletter:

Internap Network Services has started offering a short-term promotional plan for its CDN service in an effort to bring on recalcitrant customers who are leery of long-term CDN contracts. Customers sign a 12-month contract, but have 60 days to cancel the contract with no early termination fees. There's no rocket science .....

InterNAP FCP (again?)

All,
I know this has been discussed to some degree before and I have
searched the archives. However is it seems in my previous posts to this
list about anything, the truly useful replies are the private replies
ones that don't make it to this list.
We are considering the InterNAP Flow Control Platform. Currently we
have 3 transit providers but are adding one or two more and will also be
adding a connection to the Any2 exchange at One Wilshire.
The price is manageable, the reporting seems quite useful, but I
haven't seen it actually in action on my network. If it works as claimed
for managing commit levels, performance, etc. then I expect we'd be very
happy. The problem is that InterNAP does not want to do any acceptance
testing... all sales are final... and in my research on the web, I see a
few companies that have implemented the FCP and have either removed it
or switched to Avaya CNA (yes, I know it's going away).
Since InterNAP has pulled way from any kind of happiness guarantee, I'd
very much like to hear from actual users of the FCP, happy and unhappy,
to help me feel better about signing the PO.
Does it do what it says it does for performance and managing commit
levels? Do you feel it was worth the integration and money? Are you
happy with it? What size and shape is the network you used it on? Do you
have any additional thoughts to share regarding the FCP?

Thanks!
Mike

Streaming Media West and Online Video Platform Summit - Special Edition News Round Up

from Larry Kless' blog:

It was a busy news week with major announcements from companies participating in Streaming Media West and the Online Video Platform Summit.

...

Over 30 companies in the online video platform category participated in the show as either speakers, event sponsors or exhibitors, and many others came to see what was going on. The OVP space has evolved over a short time and has moved up the stack as a SaaS (software as a service) offering eclipsing CDNs which just a few months ago saw their own summit at Streaming Media West. Ben Homer, who I was glad to finally to meet at the show, pointed this out in his post, SMW Closing Thoughts | Online Video Watch,
"CDNs were noticeably missing from the event floor. There were a few, Internap was there, but Neither Akamai or Limelight had a booth this year. Several years ago CDNs were everywhere you looked at Streaming Media shows. Now it’s platforms."

Internap Adds Hibernia Atlantic to Carrier Diversity Model

SUMMIT, N.J. & DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

TransAtlantic submarine transport cable provider, Hibernia Atlantic, today announces it has been added by Internap Network Services Corporation (NASDAQ: INAP) (Internap), to its diverse network of backbone providers. The decision by Internap was designed to further enhance its already robust connectivity between the US, Europe and Canada. Internap is expanding capacity to its international backbone as part of a previously-stated strategy of investing in its core Performance IPâ„¢ services.

Internap's patented routing technology chooses the best path for content delivery - offering their customers reliability and performance guarantees unmatched in the industry, Internap delivers and distributes applications and content for more than 3,000 companies over its managed Internet and Content Delivery Network (CDN). With the addition of Hibernia to the "best-path" options available within this architecture, Internap's private network backbone solution is even less susceptible to failures in the rather unlikely event that more than one of its other providers were to experience simultaneous outages.

"Internap is always looking for ways to build in redundancy and reliability while reducing costs," said Eric Cooney, President and CEO of Internap. "Hibernia Atlantic's security, diversity and flexibility met our requirements for inclusion as part of our network.

"Hibernia's network offers Internap a reliable, yet cost-effective, option between its hubs in the US, Canada and Europe. The addition of Hibernia also reflects Internap's growth on a global level. We are proud to have been chosen by Internap because they pick only the best providers to be a part of their network," says Eric Gutshall, EVP of Sales and Marketing for Hibernia Atlantic.

"Hibernia Atlantic's network of local and regional networks in North America and Europe, coupled with its recent capacity upgrade, leave the carrier well-positioned to meet the rapidly increasing bandwidth demand that will be driven by increasing consumer demand for video services," said Cindy Whelan, principal analyst, Telecom Services for Current Analysis. "Internap's selection of Hibernia Atlantic for its international backbone builds upon Internap's reputation for provisioning the most secure, reliable avenue to serve customers today and demonstrates anticipated growth in the future."
