Samsung Instinct

A Quick Round-Up of the iPhone 3G's Chief Competition

From WIRED:

>>WIRED The all-touchscreen, monolithic-looking Samsung Instinct has quality specs: 3G, GPS, a 2-megapixel camera (with video recording – the iPhone can’t do that), and full e-mail and web browsing features.

It also adds other features its arch rival skips: Haptic feedback buzzes below your fingertip when you work the touchscreen, and voice control lets you do certain tasks sans typing. Music playback is considerably higher fidelity. Painless e-mail setup works well with numerous hosts

Is Facebook Down?

From GigaOM, news of another outage:

>>The best thing that’s happened to Facebook: Apple’s MobileMe outage, the iPhone launch and iPhone activation problems across the board. Why? Because no one seems to be reporting on them being out for most of the morning.

"iPocalypse."

From Data Center Knowledge:

>>It's already being called the "iPocalypse." Many early purchasers of the new iPhone 3G are unable to activate their phones through iTunes because the activation servers are overwhelmed. Similar problems are being reported with U.S. activations of AT&T service and U.K. activations through O2. The problems with the activation servers have become the story of the day, transforming iPhone mania into one of the most public crunch-time operational failures imaginable. Here are some of the headlines on major tech news sites:

Bushnell's NeoEdge Becomes Big Player with Yahoo! Games

Uwink related:

>>When it comes to the NeoEdge technology, Bushnell actually uses it for his new uWink gaming restaurants.

"In some cases we actually know whether it's a male or female player playing," said Bushnell. "I'm currently doing an ad buy for uWink because they can target it to gamers within a zip code. I can cluster the zip code buy around my restaurant and get a very significant footprint and advertise to a game player. It's perfect for me."

Called CyberKnife, this $3 million hydraulic robotic arm uses focused beams of radiation to fight cancerous tumors. CyberKnife, protected behind a 20,000-pound lead door at the hospital's Mount Laurel facility, is the latest technology to fight tumors, particularly those which move with the body such as in the lung, liver or prostate, said Dr. Tamara LaCouture, the hospital's acting chief of Radiation Oncology.

Cisco Sneezes, Data Center Sector Catches Cold

From Data Center Knowledge, let's blame Cisco...

>>Analyst concerns that Cisco Systems (CSCO) is seeing slow demand
from enterprise IT customers whacked the tech sector in Wednesday's trading on Wall Street, with data center stocks showing steeper declines than the broader market. Shares of Cisco were off 5.7 percent as analyst Mark Sue from RBC Capital cut his price target for the company's shares, citing a slower recovery in enterprise hardware spending.

The Dow ended Wednesday's session off 236 points (2.1 percent), while the NASDAQ index dropped 59.6 points (2.6 percent). But losses were steeper for a number of prominent data center stocks:

  • Terremark (TMRK) saw a drop of 8.7 percent as its shares fell 51 cents to $5.37.
  • Digital Realty Trust (DLR) shares fell $3.44 to $38.73, a decline of 8.2 percent on the day.
  • Rackable (RACK) slipped 6.3 percent, closing 82 cents lower at $12.17.
  • Shares of VMware (VMW), which lost a quarter of their value on Tuesday after the abrupt ouster of CEO Diane Greene, slid another 6.2 percent Wednesday. VMW shares finished at $37.71, down $2.48.
  • Content delivery provider Limelight Networks (LLNW) declined 23 cents to $3.50, down 6.2 percent for the session.
  • Savvis (SVVS) closed 5.2 percent lower, giving up 64 cents to $11.62.
Bucking the trend was Navisite (NAVI), which gained 27 cents to $3.83, a gain of 7.6 percent for the day. There was no visible news to explain the improvement.

Yankee: Carriers likely to acquire CDNs

Potential M&A in the CDN sector and a few other comments:

>>Yankee Group analyst David Vorhaus this month issued the first Yankee Group CDN scorecard, designed as a means for both service providers and content owners to evaluate what has become a sometimes confusing plethora of CDN options based on key criteria such as price, brand recognition, financial viability, ancillary services, architectural approach and management.

...

Even at its projected growth level, however, AT&T will only be at 10% to 20% of Akamai’s CDN capacity, Vorhaus pointed out.

“No service provider is going to be able to come in and build this sort of capacity right off the bat just because they are AT&T or Verizon,” Vorhaus said. “That’s why Level 3 [Communications] bought a CDN company [Savvis’s]. And it makes a lot of sense for AT&T, Verizon, BT or even Level 3 to buy one of the many CDN companies out there now.”
