Christus Spohn unveils $10.3 million renovation to Cancer Center

With donations, hospital adds robotic equipment, healing garden

CORPUS CHRISTI — Two years after the project began, the Christus Spohn Health System on Wednesday unveiled a $10.3 million renovation to its cancer center, including the addition of two new robotic pieces and a healing garden.

First floor renovations, including the addition of a private patient registration and improved waiting areas, have yet to be finished.

Christus Spohn Health System CEO Bruce Holstien said the renewal project is a melding of the system’s mission to provide compassionate care and advanced technology not often found in communities the size of Corpus Christi.

The cancer renewal project started in 2008 and included four components, which were financed through donations and fundraising events.

The hospital system bought two new pieces of equipment: a robotic radiosurgery system, called the CYBERKNIFE, that delivers beams of radiation to tumors without invasive surgery, and a second system, called the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, in which surgeons use three-dimensional imaging and robotic arms to perform surgery through tiny incisions.
