Microsoft's Newest Mega Data Centers

Microsoft's Chicago data center is just beginning to get into shape.

Microsoft has enlisted Turner Construction to build its San Antonio data center and several others. When completed, the front gates will stop a speeding Mack truck. Microsoft's data center team: L to R, its Eddie Reed, data center manager, San Antonio; Nick Bustamonte, facilities program manager, San Antonio; Michael Manos, general manager, data center services; Buon Keopradith, technical program manager, San Antonio; Joel Stone, area data center manager, North America West. Offices and cubicles (plus, eventually, an XBox 360) inside this control room will make for cozy working environs. Just like at any industrial park, trucks will pull up to these bays to drop off and pick up equipment. Workers take a lunch break. At the project's peak, there were 960 people working to build the San Antonio data center. Mike Manos, Microsoft's general manager for data center services, stands in front of the Manos Tree, an old growth tree saved during construction. Since the data center site wasn't flat land, Microsoft had to dig up to 30 feet down on one side to level the ground. It's a 1.3 mile walk all the way around Microsoft's San Antonio data center. In total, the building itself covers 475,000 square feet, or almost 11 acres. Downtown San Antonio rises through the hot Texas haze from the roof of the data center. White roofs make for more energy efficient data centers, Microsoft has found. Microsoft won't say exactly how many security layers San Antonio's data center has, but there's a heavy fence around most of the property, backed by thick woods. At Microsoft's newest data center in Chicago, it's hard to tell that's what's being built. The second floor will house data center components in shipping containers. Microsoft's containerized data centers will have "spine" of wires and pipes that supply power, cooling and other resources to each container. Microsoft's Chicago data center is just beginning to get into shape.
