Rob himself followed his Internap post with a post that does a good job of explaining why even Internap's numbers don't necessarily reflect the state of the overall wholesale Internet market.
I expect that in April of 2008, I won't be able to make the same claim as I made in April of 2007, and we will finally be able to see that price compression is no longer erasing most of the gains from unit growth in the wholesale Internet access business.

DH works at a shiny new internet startup that loves to tout how there’s a scene in L.A. too, really, there is. See? We’re young and hip! He got an invite to a preview night for the uWink restaurant at Hollywood and Highland.
It’s date night, and we still haven’t figured out where to get a decent meal in L.A., so we jumped at the chance to try something new and geeky.
The restaurant doesn’t open for a few more days, and the preview night was intended to generate some hype, as well as work the bugs out of the system. I’m going to skip over the part where we had a 4:00 reservation, and we stood in line and looked in the window until 5:30. At 5:00 the staff were still up on ladders plugging in flat screens, and the waitresses were still drying wine glasses over the touch-sensitive computer on the bar. Never mind that the bartenders were playing with the visual effects on the bar instead of serving drinks at 5:00.

The overall concept is pretty cute. You get a wrist band at the door, and you get seated with your party around a table with touch screens in the middle. An adorable pixie of a waitress explained that she was our Entertainment Guide(?) for the evening, and how to order food so that everything came out in the order we wanted, and we could eat at the same time as the members of our party.Commence the screen tapping. There are soft drinks, bar drinks, appetizers, specials, build-your-own-burgers, desserts, as well as trivia games, virtual tours, group games, and screen drawing games. Our round of Roy Rogers and Shirley Temples came from the kitchen in a flash the restaurant handled this was handled very well.

There was a table of guys with laptops, cables, and redbull huddled in one corner. At one point in the evening, the servers crashed and all the screens went blank (remember, this is a preview night). There was an audible “Awwww” across the restaurant. All of the (Mac) software reloaded quickly, and we were back in business soon. Shortly after dinner and the reboot, the waiters brought us appetizers, and then just told us to take them when we looked confused. Ten minutes later, we were brought duplicate main courses… the server(software) didn’t lose our orders, but it did reset them. I’m sure they’ll fix that before they open.
We sat with two other couples (they were only taking groups of four and six from behind us in line). One of the guys commented that this system would make for very easy inventory control inside the restaurant. Another girl in our party left without paying for her cosmo (food was free, drinks were half price for the preview). There weren’t waiters manning the tables, so I don’t think anyone at the restaurant noticed. I’m sure they’ll notice when they open.
The games were fun, and it would be easy to come to this restaurant to entertain people from several different age groups in one party. I’m sure we’ll be back with friends when the hype settles down. Especially for drinks.Sunday, June 15, 2008
Outage in San Jose, California - Internap
We’ve had a major outage on Friday evening in our San Jose, CA data center. Our data center provider tells us that its the biggest in 11 years. This was our own biggest outage to date. It turns out it was a configuration issue that happened at Internap that had caused this problem (we use Internap bandwidth). No hardware had failed.
I am not sure why Internap did not know that this change had caused a major network outage, until our network provider escalated - that too after a long time. Internap is a premium provider, so this is a question we are still waiting to hear back from our network provider/Internap. It is unacceptable.
To our customers - I am very dissapointed and concerned with what had happened. Entic.net is a startup, and is marketing to high quality hosting market. So, this kind of thing just throws the work we do, out the door, especially since we put in a lot of money to maximize reliability on the servers themselves. Sorry!

As you can see, Internap’s IP revenue was dead flat for two years at $25M quarterly, nothing could budge it. Then, in 2006, something happened at last - yes, traffic grew faster than pricing declined - and since then Internap has been doing better and better. At least until last quarter when they screwed up their integration of the Vitalstream CDN business and there was collateral damage.
In my book, this is evidence for Dan’s case, that in mid 2006 there was a resurgence in this sector. One that continues today, Cogent’s and Level 3’s pecadillos not withstanding. But that growth, while real, remains a bit weak yet - about 10% a year at Internap for the last two years. Their real growth product these days is colocation.

Equinix Hong Kong to borrow up to the HK Dollar equivalent of $20,000,000 until June 2009
On June 6, 2008, Equinix Singapore Pte. Ltd., Equinix Japan KK, Equinix Australia Pty Limited and Equinix Hong Kong Limited (together, the "Equinix Subsidiaries"), each a wholly owned subsidiary of Equinix, Inc. ("Equinix"), entered into a Second Amendment and Accession Agreement amending a multi-currency credit facility agreement with ABN AMRO Bank N.V. ("ABN") and Co�peratieve Centrale Raiffeisen-Boerenleenbank B.A., Hong Kong Branch ("Rabobank"), as lenders, and ABN as facility agent, arranger and collateral agent (the "Amended Facility"). The Amended Facility adds Equinix Hong Kong Limited ("Equinix Hong Kong") as a borrower, adds Rabobank as a lender, and increases the Amended Facility by $20,000,000 in local currency equivalents.
The Amended Facility allows Equinix Hong Kong to borrow up to the HK Dollar equivalent of $20,000,000 until June 2009 with repayment to occur in 12 equal quarterly installments thereafter. Under the Amended Facility, Equinix Hong Kong can borrow at variable spreads of 1.85% to 2.50% over the local borrowing rates and may use these borrowings to fund capital expenditures on leasehold improvements, equipment, and other installation costs related to its IBX expansion plans. The Amended Facility will continue to be secured by the Equinix Subsidiaries' Asia Pacific assets.
In connection with the Amended Facility, Equinix amended its guarantee thereof to increase it to guarantee the obligations of Equinix Hong Kong.
It is anticipated that drawings of various amounts under the Amended Facility will continue to occur periodically, and that up to the full amount of the Amended Facility will be borrowed over the next 12 months.
Atari founder Nolan Bushnell has told GameDaily BIZ that he believes he can actually serve 600 trillion games through his uWink business

Despite a drastic price reduction compared to the original, the new iPhone is still out of reach for many consumers. GigaOM - Samsung Instinct: Novelty, Not Novel
>>The touch experience on the Instinct is a novelty design. It’s what Samsung calls a haptic touch screen, which means it vibrates when a user touches in a command. Pogue calls it gimmicky and he’s right, but I liked it anyhow. However, it’s hard to think of ways to integrate that vibration into features that push the Instinct to go beyond the constraints of a modern cell phone. In contrast, the iPhone’s novel use of accelerometers and software give it the ability to orient itself (something the Instinct can’t do). That’s a feature that provides a similar Wow factor as haptic touch, but also can be used to change that way games are designed, turning the movement of the device into a type of joystick. That’s novel.

After winning its third licence to operate The National Lottery for 10 years from February 2009, Camelot is implementing its carefully-prepared transition plans to ensure that the lottery is in the best possible shape for the start of the new licence period. The plans include the introduction of a new communications network to replace the existing ISDN network in National Lottery retail outlets.
Camelot will operate the new infrastructure within a dedicated datacentre suite at the Equinix facility, which will form the central hub of Camelot’s information systems, processing all of the data coming in from its new satellite network. The move will provide Camelot with direct access to a high-performance datacentre platform designed to host high-density computing infrastructures offering a rich source of robust network connectivity.
These important elements will provide Camelot with a cutting-edge infrastructure that offers a high-performance and reliable platform for new lottery products and player services for the next 10 years.

ZapMyTV - Internap
Internap issued a P/R about ZapMyTv. The Company will start offering "its ‘triple revenue’ service over the next two quarters". As there is no link to a web site, and Google brings no more than Internap's P/R itself, right now, it's a guessing game... :-)

of fiduciary duty, and breach of contract in connection with a failed private
placement of stock. Multiple motions to dismiss the complaint have been denied.
The case is pending in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New
York, before Justice Richard B. Lowe III.
